Ready4College_26Recent campus safety statistics show an increased danger for mostly female students—with up to 1 in 5 college women experiencing and reporting sexual assault and nearly 10,000 students each year enduring aggravated assaults and robberies during their time in college. These facts are gathered by the Government Crime Data.

PEPPEREYES – SELF DEFENCE PRODUCTS is working to enhance awareness of the safety steps students need to take when they get to campus or go off campus. However, we also want to encourage students to take every opportunity to learn the programs their campus offers to help keep them safe.

Here are a few things Students should do

  • Before unpacking your boxes, students should check out what free safe ride or the campus offers walking services.
  • Students should take every safety seminar or attend a self-defense class (like RAD). Many colleges offer student free or for credit, and the techniques and strategies can be lifesaving.
  • For students moving from dorms to apartments, a personal alarm, door Alarm provides portable security. Compact options of a Dorm/Apartment hidden safes for keeping personal belongings safe are also available.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings. Listening to music through headphones or looking down at a cell phone can impede your ability to be alert.
  • Prepare themselves with pepper sprays or other legal products—one of the most effective ways to deter or distract an attacker, and permitted on most campuses. PEPPEREYES – SELF DEFENCE PRODUCTS has the most potent and reliable options on the market.
  • Stick together—there is safety in numbers, so stay close to friends when going out or coming home late from parties.

October is …

October is..k0753024

  • Breast Cancer Awareness Month
  • Bullying Prevention Month
  • Church Safety and Security Month
  • National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
  • National Crime Prevention Month
  • National Cyber Security Awareness Month

Somehow this reminds me of that Red Cross commercial where there person wanted to do so many things because there was too much need, and decided that if he gave blood that he could save three people lives.  To that end PepperEyes.com does a lot to deal with many of these issues throughout the year. For example we have a whole division of products that go to support Breast Cancer Research (http://www.peppereyes.com/BreastCancer), the item we sell on eBay go to organizations such as RAINN and  that deal with victims of and The South Carolina Coalition Againist Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.   Our Blog Defense Against Crime (https://peppereyes.wordpress.com/) address many issues included Cyber Security, Crime Prevention, Business Security, Crime Prevention and many other issues.  So just think when you purchase from PepperEyes.com, you help us support other people who have been victims.

We wrote a piece on few statistics on some of these issues see:

A Word on Domestic Violence.

By now we have all seen the TMZ edited video on the incident took place Feb. 15th at the Revel Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City — after Ray and then-fiancée (now wife) Janay Palmer got into a heated argument on their way into the elevator.   (If not you can find it on the internet) Suddenly some people became shocked and appalled because they could not connect the fact that seeing her dragged out of the elevator after being knocked out was different from seeing her knocked out.  But I digress.

Statistically 1 in 4 women are victims of Domestic Abuse, if this incident at this moment helps shed light to help prevent and address the issue in the civilized world when I’m going to use it. Unfortunately when we talk about Domestic Violence, we only think about physical abuse. However, domestic violence takes on many forms.
·         Emotional
·         Verbal
·         Financial
·         Stalking
·         Digital
·         Physical.

Remember this when you abuse another human being you are abusing the only thing in creation that was made in the likeness and image of God.  So when you see Domestic Abuse in any form or if you are a victim.. STAND UP.. GET HELP.   If you need help contact RAINN.org there can get you help http://centers.rainn.org/ from people in your area.

It’s Your Life, Protect It

Many women do not think they will be a victim of crime, and all of them are wrong. It is sad reality that far too many women are untrained about proper self defense technique .They don’t know where to enroll in the local self defense classes, how and where to buy the finest self defense products or even basic women’s self defense tips and techniques. If you don’t take the steps to protect your life who will? Perhaps you are depending on cash scraped law enforcement to be there when you need it. Chances are, they won’t be. You don’t have to go enroll in a Karate class, but you should at least take a basic self defense class or even some enroll in RAD or similar classes.

Many women these days think about carrying a handgun. You have a legal right to protect yourself, however you need to be sure you are ready to take a life with a gun. Many of our clients prefer the Non-lethal methods of self defense. Do you know which is better for you- pepper spray or pepper foam? Do you know how to use Pepper Spray? Are stun Guns legal in your state? What are the advantages of a TASER? The point of these questions are to get you thinking about what is best for you and what you can handle efficiently to help prevent you from being a victim of a crime. With the wealth of information that you can find on-line , there’s no reason for you to be unprepared when you come face to face with a criminal. You don’t have to be a kung fun expert in order to own and properly use good self defense equipment. Get educated and prepared. Be safe.

Women: don’t be afraid to respond to a situation you view as dangerous even if you think it might be ok. Too many women are embarrassed to defend themselves and that’s something the attackers count on. They want you to be quiet and embarrassed so you won’t call for help. Using verbal self defense can be just as effective as a physical response. What’s the worst that could happen? You might discover that your attacker wasn’t really an attacker at all. But that’s ok. It’s much better to be safe than sorry or dead.

DEFENSE TIPS FOR WOMEN: Tip #1 – be aware of your surroundings

Be mindful

Be mindful

Everyday, people all over the world take unnecessary risks with their safety. The majority of the time, their mind set is that, “nothing is going to happen to me.”

Sadly, all too often these women find out differently.

Areas often over looked as hazardous areas are:

  • Vary your Routines – Try not to set them. It is very easy to get into this typical routine. Take the kids to school by 8 AM and drop by the post office by 8:15 Stop by the nursing home to see grandma at 9 and then come home to feed and take care of animals. These routines are very easy for an assailant to observe and anticipate and plan their attack.
  • Beware of Laundry mats – A surprising number of women will go late night and alone, to these places. Their reasons are often that is when they are quieter, cooler or even just a time to escape from the kids at home. These places are becoming more automated. No employee or security is on the premises.
  • Look for Signs of entry – When it is obvious that there has been someone in your home, or office, STOP! TURN AROUND! LEAVE! Call from somewhere else. Curiosity may have killed the cat; the satisfaction of finding an assailant inside will not bring you back.
  • Beware Public restrooms – It is a common misconception that men are the only ones to sexually assault, rob, or commit murder. This is false. Not only do women do these things, they often work as a decoy for a male in hiding.
  • Beware of Paneled van – The old fashioned, high walled vans are dangerous. It only takes a split second for an assailant to open the cargo door and pull someone in. Be cautious anytime one is parked next to your vehicle.
  • Beware of High vehicles – A common ploy is for an assailant to lie beneath one of these and wait for a victim to stand still while opening their car door. At this time a knife is used to cut the tendons and muscles in the area behind the ankles causing the victim to drop to the ground and be unable to regain their feet to run. It might feel silly to check under the car next to yours but silly beats dead any day.
  • Be caution of focusing on your Children and car seats – Check out your surroundings before reaching inside with your child. Imagine for a moment how vulnerable a person is when their hands are full of baby with three quarters of the body, leaned over and restricted inside the car. This information also applies with dealing with putting packages in your car.
  • Being Alone in your Office/home – NEVER admit to being the only one in. Think how alone the phrase, “I’m sorry, they won’t be back until 2:30” sounds. If your office isn’t equipped with an alarm or even simple pepper spray, speak to your employer. Remember, there is nothing in the office that is worth losing your life over. If it is a robbery, give them the money and send them on their way. If the assailant is interested in more than robbery, keep your head and look for possible weapons around you. Things such as pencils, scissors, telephones, potted plants, and anything else you can get a hold of.
  • Safety Jogging trails – Joggers are great at setting routines. They also enjoy the cooler evening and night temperatures. Add to that, headphones and music that dulls the senses. Whenever possible, take the dog, a stick, a stun gun  recruit a friend or put a leash on the spouse and drag them off the couch. Don’t go jogging alone in secluded areas. When you do go, try to keep one of the personal alarms with you. Even things like a rolled up newspaper, can make an effective weapon. Recently a woman in Florida was attacked and killed on a jogging trail.
  • Listen to your Sixth sense – LISTEN TO YOUR INNER VOICE! If there is a nagging thought of not entering a house, garage, or building, don’t do it. If something tells you to look around, walk faster or even run, then listen to it. There is usually a reason. Is it not better for strangers to wonder if you’re “odd” than to end up in a ditch?

While self defense teachers advocate that women carry some type of personal protection products such as pepper spray and stun guns, nothing on earth can beat common sense and being mindful of your surroundings.

Put that Cell Phone Down…

Be Mindful of your Surroundings

Be Mindful of your Surroundings

I was out shopping the other day and sitting in my car trying to get the dog secured and was just watching people, looking for an inspiration for my next blog piece. When I suddenly noticed it, as plain as the sun in the sky. There they were people getting out of, or walking to their cars while either talking to, or texting on their cell phones. The cell phone users were pretty oblivious to anything going on.  While cell phone have allowed us the luxury of instantaneous communications, it has also lead to some tragic deaths, or a source of great distractions.   If you’ve ever see the show 1000 ways to die you may have see the case where a man is texting his girlfriend while driving, arguing about where she should be picked up. Since neither of them are paying attention to where they are going, the man accidentally runs over his girlfriend with his half-ton pickup truck when she unknowingly steps out in front of it.  Perhaps you seen cases where people have been on phone and step out in front of cars. However, what I was look at was potential crime victims.

FBI Crime studies indicate us that women are extremely at risk when walking to and from their vehicles in parking lots. Parking lots are ideal for criminals because they can simply walk around as if they were an ordinary law abiding citizen when they are actually looking for a target. Parking lots offer criminals a never ending supply of potential people to victimize and vehicles to steal or break into.

Women in particular make themselves easy targets for a couple of reasons. The first reason is because they always have a long list of things to do. The second reason most criminals can attest to is , while they are on their cell phone, they like to talk and air out what they’re going to do: “I’m going to go here”, “I’m going to do this and see somebody”. All the criminal does  is stay in the shadows and listens while we talk and that’s why we become a target.”

According to interviews done with prison inmates, they told that women on cell phones as good targets. Anyone on a cell phone is pre-occupied with her conversation and not focusing on her surroundings.

As always anyone needs to be mindful of their surroundings.  Everyone should exercise caution and use common sense when parking their vehicles in parking lots. These tips may seen utterly simple yet most people never seem to do them.

  • When arriving at a parking lot, try and park as close to the front of the store/building that you are visiting.
  • Use the main/front entrance of a large shopping mall because it is always busy with people and vehicle traffic.
  • The main entrance is most always under video surveillance and criminals often know this. A criminal lurking around a mall parking lot would most likely target a victim who parked in a remote or less crowded section.
  • Don’t be taken by surprise. Be aware and be prepared.
  • Stand tall and walk confidently. Don’t show fear. Don’t look like a victim.
  • Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a place or situation, leave right away and get help if necessary.
  • If you have a choice, don’t park in parking garages because they offer criminals a better opportunity to stay concealed and lay in wait for victims. While searching for your “close to the front” parking space, start scanning the parking lot for suspicious looking people. Obviously if the criminal who is casing the parking lot is sitting in a vehicle you may not see him. Many vehicles have dark tint which makes it even harder to ascertain if the car parked next to you is occupied or not. It’s not too hard to pick up on traits that make a person “suspicious” A person slowly walking through the parking lot who seems to be looking around frequently would make some suspicious. (unless they can’t remember where they parked). A person who is standing in the parking lot doing nothing other than standing around would make some people suspicious. A person who is sitting or standing in front of the store by himself watching people would make some  suspicious. A car slowly driving around the parking lot numerous times would also be suspicious.
  • When you exit your car and walk towards the mall/store, look around and scan the parking lot which does two things. First, by looking around and scanning the area it should alert you to a suspicious person or car. Secondly, if a criminal is in the parking lot looking for a victim, he may see that you are aware of your surroundings and you may not be an easy target. Keep your cell phone in your hand and if someone starts to approach you get on your phone and make a call or pretend to be making a call. If you have a cell phone stun gun, you can opt to defend yourself.

Needles to say, I am a big advocate of women carrying pepper spray and if you carry it, please know how to use it.

Are you prepared?

Are you prepared?

Keep it in your hand when you are walking to and from your car. My wife and daughter keep their pepper sprays on their key ring and  are instructed not to hesitate to spray someone suspicious who approaches them or and makes them insecure about their security. If someone ever approaches you in a parking lot, show them your pepper spray and tell them to stop or you will spray them. I have seen some really big men drop to the ground and scream after they have been sprayed. Get pepper spray if you don’t already have some.

I am not a big advocate of lethal protection as I’ve seen family members accidently killed by them. I’ll leave that decision to you.

While you are inside the mall/store, keep an eye out for suspicious acting people who might be looking for a potential crime victim. That strange person that keeps popping into every store that you visit is someone to watch out for. Remember that guy who was loitering in front of the mall or in the parking lot when you arrived? If he is still in the same spot, he is suspicious and should be avoided. (The Salvation Army doesn’t count)

If you see someone suspicious in the parking lot or inside the mall/store, find a security officer and report your concerns. Most major malls have private security and don’t be shy to go to them and have them walk you to your car. If possible, go to the mall/store with another person or a group of people. Criminals like easy targets and several people walking together are not easy when compared to a single person walking alone.

Keep these tips in the back of your mind every time you park in a parking lot because they will help keep you safe. Bring up this topic with your family, friends, and co-workers so they can take steps that will make them safer.
