cropped-bxp35697

According to RAINN, a sexual assault occurs every 98 seconds. You’ve probably seen stories in the media of sexual predator who follow women home from the gym, or other places. But there are several things you can do to reduce your chances of becoming their next prey.

Whether you’re our jogging, shopping or out and about running errands, there are safety tips you can follow to help lower your chances of becoming a crime victim.

1. PepperEyes.com motto is Get Ready! Stay Ready. – Preparation and Prevention are the keys. Think about having a fire extinguisher and knowing how to use it in your home.
2. Stay Alert – avoid being distracted by your smartphone. Use a blue-tooth if you need to talk
3. Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t ‘feel’ right..leave the area.
4. Always have your keys ready. There are videos on youtube on how to use your keys for self-defense. Watch and learn.
5. If you carry a personal defense device, like pepper spray or a stun gun, whistle – knows how to use it and have it ready. The bottom of your purse is the wrong place to have it.
6. Be aware! Look around and make eye contact with people you encounter.
7. Walk with an attitude. Have that I dare you to mess with me look.
8. If security is available, ask for an escort to your vehicle — especially at night. If you know you are going out at night, have a friend with you!
9. Don’t wear expensive jewelry or carry pricy handbags when you’re shopping, running errands or anytime you’re alone. Robbers often work in pairs. One scopes out potential victims inside, then text or calls their partner with a  description to their partner waiting outside.
10. If you have children with you, keep a close eye on them and teach them about stranger danger. On the news last week was a woman trying to steal a child.
11. If you must take a purse, consider a small, crossbody bag.
12. Hide your cash, credit cards and cell phone in your front pockets, so if a thief does grab your purse, he or she won’t get away with much.
13. Try to avoid being overloaded with shopping bags.
14. When you leave, lock your doors and keep your windows up, and don’t have valuables in plain sight!
15. Keep an eye out for vehicles that might be following you. If they’re still behind you when you’re close to home, drive to the nearest fire station or police station and honk your horn.
16. In carjacking or robbery, give them your car, purse or anything else they want. Nothing is worth risking your life.
17. If someone tries to sexually assault you or force you into their vehicle, scream and fight like your life depends on it..cause it does. Do whatever you have to do to get away…do it!
18. Take a self-defense course. Search for them online. Many colleges and universities offer a FREE RAD (Rape aggression defense) class, and some will teach them to the ladies of any organization (church, yoga, etc).
19. There are several safety apps available, including Guard Lallana, Safe Walk, B Safe, and others they are beneficial to you. Research and use the one that’s best for you.
20. Knowing all of this stuff is good, doing it daily will be better.

A Few Tips To Help You Stay Safe

  • If someone knocks on the door that you were not expecting or are not comfortable stalkers10n-1-webtalking to, do not answer the door. Make sure they know you are still home and that it is not an empty house, so they don’t break in, however, tell them to leave and that if they don’t, you will call the police. There are lots of products on the market to allow you to see who is there, without opening your door, including fish-eye peepholes, to cameras.
  • Have clear areas, exterior lights and trimmed bushes around your house so that no one can hide outside.
  • Pay attention while walking in parking lots and out in public and try not to carry lots of things in your hands. This can make you an easy target.
  • Before you walk back to your car in public, have your keys and pepper spray out and ready, This way you aren’t making yourself an easy target as you search for them in your purse or pockets.
  • Appear confident and make eye contact with people in public as much as possible. People are less likely to attack you if it appears you will fight back.
  • Keep texting or using social media to a minimum when walking in public, multitasking can inhibit you from being aware of your surroundings.
  • Save the non-emergency police dispatch numbers in your  phone contacts where it is easily accessible.
  • If there is an emergency, call 911.

Can carrying Pepper Spray truly make you safer?

If you troll thru this blog you can see a plethora of articles on the usefulness of pepper spray and other self-defense products and techniques.  Will having any of these self-defense products really make you safer?

The short answer is: It depends!

  • It depends on your mindset at the time of the incident
  • It depends on your ability to effectively use Pepper Spray or whatever you have correctly.
  • It depends on …well keep reading.

First, let me state that Pepper Spray is an effective self-defense product that has been used for decades to not only depend on citizens and law enforcement personnel ifbxp35697 used correctly in the right situations.  And the art of this type of defense dates back centuries.

However, there are people who carried or owned pepper spray who have still been crime victims because they were not prepared.  There are a number of reasons why having it didn’t work..for them.

  • They panicked and did not focus on self-defense.
  • They didn’t know how to properly use it
  • They could not get to it, in the bottom of their purse or another inaccessible place.
  • It was a surprise attack and they were caught off guard because they were not paying attention.
  • Your attacker was in the minority of the population that is immune to the effects of Pepper Spray for various reasons.
  • Your pepper spray had expired.
  • The assailant is wearing glasses or was prepared
  • The Pepper Spray was defective and you did not know it.

While this is not an exhaustive list, it probably represents a majority of reasons why just having pepper spray will not help you.  The good news is that many of these issues can be negated with the embracing PepperEyes.com motto…which is Get Ready..Stay Ready.   You can also embrace the motto of the Boy Scouts of America: Be Prepared.

Any self-defense product, including pepper spray, Tasers, or a gun, requires that you be prepared mentally and physically and have it available to use. Pepper Spray, like most weapons, can be taken away from you and then be used against you, if you are not prepared and able to use it at the correct moment. In the case of just owning pepper, spray think of sexual assaults.  It is estimated that 80% to 85% of all sexual assault victims know their attackers and fifty percent of assaults occur inside the victim’s own home. Rapists are not always the stranger in the alley or the weirdo in the parking lot. If a fraction of these victims owned a self-dense product, how prepared are they to use it?   Chances are they were not.

Think about being on a date. Think about going to a party. Ponder the different people you know who may come to your house often.  A deliveryman, a Utility worker, a client.  What is your mindset?  How prepared are you, if you are put in a position of being harmed. What if you have pepper spray or another self-defense product but can’t get to it and use it?

This is why a self-defense mindset and preparation is essential.  When a soldier has run out of bullets and the enemy is coming, there are only two options.  Fight or Flight.  If you can’t get away, how prepared are you to fight? If you can’t use your pepper spray, you have the same two options. How prepared you to fight.

Just something to think about.

What is Forced Cone Pepper Spray?

This is a variation on the popular cone type pepper spray delivery types and is the best in
most situations. It is a fine mist that comes out of the pepper spray canistercone-spray-pattern in a forceful spray pattern usually at distances from 8 to 12 feet.

Most of the smaller 1/2 oz. personal size pepper sprays are forced cone sprays. The spray pattern is circular and covers a width of about two feet; approximately the size of a human head. The range of the forced cone spray is about six to 12 feet. The spray is a finer mist than the broken stream but is delivered in a forceful stream. The eyes will shut tight and fast. If the slightest amount of spray is inhaled, it will cause instant choking and uncontrollable coughing.

In the latest generation of dispensing actuators, the mist is made up of super-fine droplets of pepper solution. These droplets help to minimize blow-back of pepper spray formula on you while the mist (looks like a heavy fog) penetrates the attacker’s skin pores and mucous membranes for an experience they will not soon forget!. This pattern actually spreads out to a width of approximately 2 feet at its maximum distance. This pattern covers the whole face and is absorbed into the mucous membrane with hot pepper causing the eyes to seal with tears, nose to run, excessive coughing, shortness of breath, etc.

Should you Carry Pepper Spray at Work?

Is it a good idea to carry pepper spray to work?Pepper-Spray-for-Security-of-Women

According to US Crime Data workplace homicide is the leading cause of death among
female workers in the US and is the second leading cause of death for men. Aside from homicides, we can’t forget about the 18,000 employees who are non-fatally assaulted every week while on the job.

Now before you decide to carry any self-defense product, you may want to check your workplace rules. There are many that don’t allow employees to carry guns to work, even if you have a carry permit.  I’ve worked at places that did not allow employees to carry pepper spray.  You may want to ask questions about what is or is not allowed. If the HR department is firm on that policy for legal reasons, you may want to ask that if something happens to you on their property, are their legally responsible especially since they won’t allow you do defend yourself.

Don’t be a victim, keep pepper spray within easy reach.
