Defense Against Crime

When Dogs Attack!

Let’s me start by saying I am a dog person. I’ve had by current dog for almost a decade, and we travel together a lot.  Not only that, but my spoiled pooch is a person dog. This means she likes people. Don’t get it wrongs she a great watch dog, she instantly alerts us if someone comes into our yard.

None the less there are at least 4.5 – 4.7 million Americans are bitten by dogs every year hqdefaultand, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 20 to 30 of these dog attacks result in death.

I know that on several occasions I’ve encountered not only stray dogs, but dogs that have escaped their owners. If a strange barking dog came at you what would you do? Are your ready to defend yourself from a dog attack?

Think about this! Bite bites can lead to serious infections such as tetanus and rabies, disability, and deformity. You can reduce your chances of this buy having the right tools and knowing how to use them.

One of the tools that I encourage people who like to go for walks or bike rides to carry is Pepper Spray. You may ask –“Is pepper spray effective against a malicious dog”?   If a mean dog attacks you, spraying it with dog repellants pepper spray  in its face will cause the dog temporary blindness, shortness of breath and a burning sensation until its effect wears off. The dog has no other option but to retreat; allowing you the opportunity to get away. If you jog, take walks or ride your bike, then you should carry dog repellent pepper spray with you. Pepper Spray is legal, lightweight, easily accessible, and will provide fast protection when you need it most.

Important People vs Attack Dog Safety Tips

If a Dog Runs After You When Jogging

I know this sounds bizarre, but running excites dogs. Remember my nice dog. If I’m riding and she has her head out the window. She will actually bark at runners.  What you should do when encountering a dog when running is stop running. The first thing, is Don’t Panic. Remember many animals “sense fear”. Say confident and slowly and steadily move away without making and aggressive moves. With any luck, you can safely walk out of the dog’s roving range. Should the dog attempt to attack you, use your pepper spray.

What if I don’t want to pepper spray a dog?

Are there ways to avoid using pepper spray on an attacking dog? OK, so you don’t want to cause psychological harm to a dog. First, when possible never approach an unfamiliar dog. You don’t know the dogs history. There are rescue dogs that have issues. There are dogs that don’t like certain types of people. You may be the type of person the dog fears.  Like rattlesnakes, some dogs warn you not to come near them. The may growl or their hair may stand up on their back.  First, you should never run from a dog and scream.  Second, avoid direct eye contact with a dog. The dog may view this act as a challenge. Next, never disturb any dog that is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies. If you are attacked and you don’t have pepper spray or don’t want to “feed” the dog something else–your jacket, bike, purse, books – to distract it.

Another technique is to remain motionless when approached by an unfamiliar dog (but have your dog pepper spray in your hand). Do not run when confronted with a threatening dog. Running only stimulates the dog to increase its aggression. Hold your ground and demonstrate moderate dominance by telling the dog firmly to go home. This usually works wonders. Firmly saying “no” and “sit” may also work. You might try: “Go away,” “Go home” or “Nice dog”.

What to do If You’re Knocked Down by an Aggressive Dog

If an aggressive dog happens to knocks me down before you a chance to get to your pepper spray you should curl into a ball, ticking your knees in and use your hand to protect sensitive areas like your head and neck. If you get a change to make a strong kick. Do so. You can also use a commanding voice to tell the dog to “Stop”.   Resist the urge to scream or roll away. A moving target may encourage the dog.

You need to be aware that you´re always at risk when you are running, walking or Jogging, It is important to note that even if you are carrying pepper spray you need stick to well traveled streets. Please avoid shortcuts through wooded areas, parking lots, or alleys. If you like to jog on trails through a park, it’s like having a sign on your back that says “victim”. Hundreds of women are sexually assaulted every year jogging on trails, and dozens murdered.

Run or walk with a partner or a dog, do not wear headsets (IPOD, MP3, etc) , and carry a cell phone. If possible carry some type of personal protection product such as pepper spray or a big stick if you have to. For some weird reason there is a growing population of aggressive dog owners especially in the neighborhoods of the lower socioeconomic status.
