Just one inch of wood

  • According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 1.03 million home invasions occur each home-invasionyear.
  • Surprisingly, most burglaries occur between 10 AM and 3PM. Many homes are empty during this time while people are at work. Burglars know this and use it to their advantage.
However, home invasions can occur at any time of day or night.
  • 3.7 million homes are broken into each year. That’s 7 homes every minute.

If you would, open either your front or your back door and look at the deadbolt plate. There is just one inch of soft wood protecting the safety of your home – your door casings cannot protect you from a thief kicking your door in.

This is what usually happens!

Yesterday, I was watching the local news and saw this story: http://www.live5news.com/story/30476518/daytime-burglary-string-reported-in-moncks-corner-13-homes-hit

According to the FBI Crime data, the easiest way for a criminal to get into your house is just to kick in your door!   Those same crime reports indicate that every 12 seconds a home is invaded by going right through the front or back door. This is called door frame failure.  The same statistical data indicates that 2:00 o’clock in the afternoon is the biggest break-in time.

So what can you do?

There are numerous steps that you can take to make your home less attractive to a burglar.

  • Have good door and window locks.
  • Install Door kick plates such as the Strike Master II or others. You can get them at090610_webcamthieves local hardware stores, Lowes, Home Depot and Wal-Mart. This makes it hard to kick your door in.
  • Don’t leave spare keys in obvious places. Please know that the one key hider rock in your yard isn’t fooling anyone. If you going to use a hider rock have lots of similar rocks in your garden and blend it in. or put it under the mulch around a plant in your yard.
  • Ask the police to come to give you a safety inspection, and they can make good recommendations…this is a FREE Service.
  • Install a Home Alarm System. Shop around for the system that best fits your need and income. This can range from Simply Safe, to ADT.
  • If you can’t afford one, you can simply buy the Stickers and a Sign to make them think you have one.
  • Get a good barking Dog.
  • If you don’t want a dog you can do a few things, such as just post a ‘Beware of Dog’ sign or even purchase a Barking Dog Alarm.
  • When you are not home, leave the radio on talk radio.
  • Secure your windows. This could include window alarms or many other ways that you can Google.
  • Leave lights on, or if possible have programmable lights. Some modern alarm systems allow you to control your light, you can tie these light to motion sensors. so that when the alarm senses motion, 30 seconds later a light comes on.
  • Secure Sliding Doors and Windows
  • Tall shrubs and overgrown trees are welcome hiding places for robbers to wait until the coast is clear to get into your house
  • If you are home in the daytime, come out every so often to look around. If all of your neighbors did this. I would cut down on crime.
  • USE Your Locks. You would be surprised at how many burglars simply open unlock doors and windows.
  • If you happen to be home when someone enters your home without permission, have a way to deal with them.

Vacation Tip: Don’t Kennel Your Dog

It’s normal to want your dog looked after while you are on vacation, especially if the dog is not going with you. Many people I know, put their dog in a kennel for safe keeping while they are away. If you are going on vacation and not taking your dog, try, if possible to have a TRUSTED friend or relative to feed, walk and look after your pet in your residence while you are away, rather than boarding it in a kennel.

This can also provide you an extra layer of security while you are away.

The barking will make would-be burglars think twice, after all who would go on vacation and leave their dog, and a barking dog alerts neighbors of possible activity around your home. Also with the person taking care of your dog, you know someone is watching your home on a daily basis.

The Barking Dog Security System

OK, I’ll admit I’m a Dog person. Dogs are one of the earliest, if not the first, domesticated animals in human history. They are also the only house pet mentioned in the Bible. Sorry cat owners! Dogs have served many purposes including providing security and protection for their owners. Sheppard’s, Ancient Armies and some Native American Tribes used dogs both for protection as well as early warning systems in case of predators, or enemy forces. Dogs are the ideal protective pet not only because they are loyal and subservient to their owners, but they inherently have the urge to protect their owner and their property.

In various interviews from convicted rapist and burglars, they clearly stated that they are least likely to target homes that have dogs. Dogs remain a valuable tool in your home or business protection tools. I remember an elderly lady who owned a neighborhood store in Philadelphia whose dog would bark if anyone tried shoplifting. I know of several local business that have guard dogs in their fence at night. I have several crime countermeasures in my home including various alarm systems and a family dog. My dog is one of the best God created early warning systems. She knows when someone enters my yard, is on my porch or if a rat or other creature is outside on the back fence. If someone comes in the yard, she barks. You can’t get that type of detection from any other electronic home security system.

A good loud barking dog can serve as a great deterrent to a burglar. Even having a BEWARE OF DOG sign, makes criminals think twice before entering your residence. Their barking provides you with an early warning system that allows you time to take protective or defensive measures. Although a larger dog (German Shepards, Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, Bull Mastiffs, etc) are more feared by burglars, any loud-barking dog such as Chihuahuas, terriers, beagles or certain hounds will serve the purpose.

If you don’t already have a dog, and there are not any legal, medical, or other restrictions for getting one then you should give serious consideration to owning and training one. Your dog should have obedience training but not attack training. Trained attack dogs can pose other problems and can seriously injure or kill someone unintentionally. An attack dog can cause serious legal problems and consequences for you.

Some breeds of dogs are well suited to be watchdogs for their inclination to bark loudly. They may not have the physical build of their more husky brothers, but they often make up for the lack of size with excellent hearing. Great watchdog breeds include terriers such as Yorkshire, Scottish, Cairn, and West Highland, as well as Chihuahuas, ShihTzus, and Dachshunds. When you are looking for a dog, do your homework to know of potential problems. For me, I’ve always enjoyed mixed breeds that seem to offer the best of both worlds.

Inside or Outside

The question for homeowners considering getting a dog is whether to have a yard dog or house dog. If you live in an apartment the choice has been made for you. A yard dog is likely to be a better deterrent, but dogs kept indoors provide better burglar protection if an intruder actually gains entry to your residence. Consider also that yard dogs are more susceptible to being poisoned, killed or set free by would-be criminals. My younger brother once told me that someone came to his house once, and his Rottweiler went nuts. This had never happened before, so my brother asked the person to leave because his dog sensed there was something not right about him.

When considering a dog as a home security and family edition, consider that it will require much more time and attention than any of your other home security elements. Getting a puppy is as much work as having a new-born baby, but the early training is worth it. It will need to be fed, trained, kept clean, kept healthy, given exercise and lots of attention and love. If you want a dog to have protective capabilities beyond just barking and alerting, make sure to have it professionally trained. You can locate great trainers in the yellow pages, or get recommendation from your local pet store.

For those of you who do not like dogs or have a medical condition  there are Electronic Barking  Dogs Security Alarms, that give the illusion of having a dog.
