The other morning I was listening to the Steve Harvey Morning show and they were reading a letter about a couple (A) that was housesitting for some friends (B) of theirs. Little did they know that the couple who owned the house (B) had been secretly recording them (A) until a mutual friend (C) alerted them of the homeowner’s sexual appetite. Needless to say, couple A was upset. Did they have legal recourse against the homeowners, since the recording happens in their house? For this, they would have to check the laws where they lived.
Now consider the popularity of Airbnds or other rentals? If you are a frequent traveler, how would you know that you are not being watched? Just don’t think about being spied on in rental homes and hotels, you also need to be concerned about, either. How about your own residence? If someone came in and managed to conceal a hidden camera inside your residence, would you know?
Modern camera technology has greatly advanced over the past few decades. If you look at the spy gear that we sell to aid homeowners against crimes, the same tools can be used to commit invasion of privacy against unsuspecting citizens.
Here are some things you can do!
- LOOK – Physically check the room just like in spy movies. Think like a spy and come up with areas where you can hide a spy device. Check for microphone transmitters in possible hiding places like lamps, light fixtures, vases, flower pots and inside smoke detectors or air filters.Examine the rooms for unusual decors, like out-of-place picture frames and random fixtures. Look for pinholes that may be used for a camera lens. Check out spy gear web sites, and see if the room has any of that stuff.
Don’t forget to check under chairs, tables, shelves, and couches, too. These are all excellent hiding places for hidden microphones. Also, check objects including books, clocks, alarm sensors, stuffed toys, pillows, couches, and electrical outlets.
Turn off all light sources – and check of small green or red LEDs. Night vision devices use these kinds of lights and they are usually blinking, or shine a low light.
You can also use a flashlight in the dark and check for a reflective camera lens.
- LISTEN – some motions sensitive devices emit low-noise clicks and buzzes when they are on. If you have a good hearing you may be able to detect these almost inaudible sounds in the residence.
- USE Technology – There is an App called NMap (https://nmap.org/) that can be used to detect networks. There are also bug detectors that alert you to signals. Bug detectors are affordable, light and easy to use.
