Pepper-Spray-for-Security-of-Women
Many people take time when picking out clothes, toys, cars, and other products, but will grab the sparkly pepper spray displayed next to the counter at the convenient store.
They hope it will do the job when the time comes.

Having oleoresin capsicum (OC) Pepper Spray and knowing how to use it properly can make you a victor and not another crime statistic.

How do you know if that pepper spray you saw at the Convenient Store will do the trick? How about the cheap pepper spray from the internet site WeSellCheapPepperSpray.com?

What should you look for when selecting Pepper Spray to purchase?   After all your life may depend on it being effective against your attacker

Also, don’t get fooled by some brands that have ads in women magazines.  If you pay a magazine or other media enough money, they will print ads for any product wither it works or not! That ‘s how they make some of their revenue. Let’s look at this example. One popular model brags that their pepper spray is legal in all 50 United States. This is absolutely true.  But what does that really mean?  While Pepper Spray is legal for most citizens to carry in all 50 states, some states have strict restrictions on the size and strength you can carry or buy.

This would mean that means that this brand of pepper spray meets the minimal standard allowed by the state with the lowest acceptable.   This would mean that if the lowest rating allowed is 2% OC that is what this pepper spray rating is.  However, other states that do not have restrictions and so you can have 18% or 23% OC.  Which do would you want a mild irritant or bring on some pain pepper Spray?

So what do you need to know about selecting and buying Pepper Spray?  Information and knowledge.  We are going to give you some information that you can ask the person selling the pepper spray, and if they cannot answer many of your questions, you may want to shop somewhere else.  If you do not see most of the information on web sites selling pepper spray, move along. You’ll also let them know when it comes to Pepper Spray, you are no dummy!

Generally, determining the strength of different manufacturers of pepper sprays can be confusing and difficult. Statements a company makes about its product strength are not regulated, so a company can claim almost anything.  A method using the capsaicin (the stuff that makes peppers hot) and related capsaicinoids  (the class of capsicum compounds) (CRC) content of the product is unreliable as well, because there are six different types of capsaicinoids, causing different levels of irritation. Many, manufacturers do not state which particular type of capsaicinoids are used in their brands.   But don’t worry about this.. we can get you the basics of what you need to know to select effective Pepper Spray.

Remember your life may depend know this information. Don’t worry if you don’t know these terms I’ll help you,

•          What is the Scoville Heat Unit (SHU)?- The Scoville scale is a measurement of the pungency (spiciness or “heat”) of chili peppers and other spicy foods, as recorded in Scoville Heat Units (SHU) based on the concentration of capsaicinoids, among which capsaicin is the predominant component. This is usually the rating before the final products are bottled.  Some manufacturers exaggerate their ratings so beware. But in general the higher the number the better,
•          What is the Certified Heat Rating? This is the heat rating of OC Pepper Spray when being delivered out of the canister. This is an independent lab tested rating.  Is this available for you to see?
•          What kind of spray pattern does it have?  There are three types: Stream, Fog, and Cone.
•          How far does it spray? How close do you want your assailant to be when spraying. The effective range can be between 6ft and 25 feet.
•          Delivery methods: Spray, Mist, Gel or Foam

Here is an important tip: Never buy your pepper spray where you buy your beer.

What to do when strangers move into your house!

After two long weeks away on vacation, you’re finally home. It was a great trip, but now

"She says she's got squatters rights."

you’re at the front door of your residence. You open your front door and take a step inside. Then you notice that something’s wrong. The lights are on, but you don’t have a timer rigged up. There’s a half a box of pizza and some drinks on your coffee table and a bath towel draped over the back of your lazy-boy. You’re hit with a jolt of adrenaline — a burglar’s been in your home. Before you can react, a guy wanders into the room. He’s wearing your favorite bathrobe. “Who are you?” he asks.

You scan the apartment. Yes, this is your place. Your stuff’s all here, but it’s being used by someone else. Friend, you’ve got yourself a squatter.  The squatter may not be a cute little girl who ate your porridge, sat in your chairs, and slept in your bed.

Your home is where you should feel safe. It is where you let your guard down and perform your most personal routines. It is where you are most vulnerable. So what if someone broke into your house and was hiding somewhere? It’s the stuff of urban legends, but the following stories are anything but fictional.

Squat happens

Think this is an urban myth .. it is not. It happens. You can actually google stories of this. Perhaps you heard the story of A Washington state man made that made a startling discovery when he arrived at his home a few weeks ago.

Davis Wahlman, of Green Lake, said that when he got to his house he found a couple of lights on and his bathroom window screen in his tub, but said nothing strange dawned on him until he heard some noises coming from his attic the next morning.

“I am kind of jolted out of bed,” Wahlman said. “I hear rummaging around above me, which I know is the attic so I’m like ‘That’s kind of weird.'”

Wahlman tried to figure out what in fact was going on and noticed a light that was on in his office space. The door was locked and when he knocked, he got no response. He then heard a woman’s voice coming from the room.

“‘Jimmy? Is that you, Jimmy?'” Wahlman explained. “I’m like ‘No, it’s not Jimmy. Who is this and why are you in my house?'”

One of the residents of my subdivision had something similar to this happen to him. He came home to find someone sleeping in his home.

Now you think, that’s OK I’ll just call the police…and get them out.  Not so quick.

If police find squatters, there’s not a whole lot they can do. Police uphold criminal law. Squatting is a civil crime. Civil law is worked out in the courts. Once police has determined that a squatter has established some sort of tenancy, the issue becomes a civil matter. By settling into a home in a generally respectable manner, a squatter can create the appearance of tenants’ rights. This appearance alone can confound an easy rousting of squatters.

What is a squatter?

Squatters are people who move into abandoned, foreclosed, or otherwise unoccupied homes or premises. Generally, under United States law, the owners can have a squatter evicted for violating loitering or trespassing laws unless the squatters can establish that they have tenants’ rights or can gain adverse possession due to the property having been completely abandoned by the owner. Other countries have similar laws, although you should seek specific legal advice dependent on where you are. If you suspect you have squatters in your neighborhood contact the police and the homeowners, but stay calm and let the authorities deal with the situation.

What the squat can you do?

  1. Identify the signs of squatting – Keep an eye out on your neighbor’s if they are away or abandoned houses in your neighborhood.
  2. Evaluate the Situation – try to determine if those people have a legal right to be there. You can just calmly talk to them.
  3. Speak to your neighbors – see if anyone else in the neighborhood as additional information.
  4. Know the laws in your city and state regarding abandoned property – as mentioned above getting rid of squatters may not be straightforward. Know what legal steps are available to you to remove squatters. Do not take the removal process upon yourself.
  5. How to deal with squatters
    1. Contact the Police
    2. Contact the property owner, if it is not your home
    3. Determine your grounds for action – depending on what they did in your home you may have lots to do.
  6. To Reduce your chances of getting squatters
    1. Have a Home Alarm
    2. Have Internal and external Cameras
    3. Have your Neighbors watch your house when you are going to be away for a while
    4. Let the Police know you will be out of town and who has access to your house

Telephone Scam Alert

040513_0112_BewareofDel1.jpgThere are variations on this telephone scam…so be careful and be wise.

Calls are being received from a caller who informs the victim a loved one or family member has been in an accident.

The caller often asks leading questions, which in turn is causing the victims to provide the names or locations of their family members.  Then, they tell the victim they are holding the loved one or family member hostage until they receive payment. The scenario varies from call to call and occasionally includes threats to harm the family member or a statement about the caller’s brother being there with the brother being a “fugitive” who is angry.

The callers demand the victim wire money for the safe release of their family member. The request is usually between $500 – $1000, but has varied. Some demands have been much higher in certain areas. It appears the calls are not coming from the local area. It is also unknown at this time how the victim’s phone numbers are being obtained.

If you receive such a telephone call, please confirm the safety of your family member and contact your local police agency

Has your phone number been Spoofed?

Today I received a phone number and my phone auto-replied saying  I will call you right Annoying callback.  Then I received a text reply asking“ who is this?”

So I replied “you called me and my phone auto-replied

Long story short…the person did not call me, and I alerted them that their phone number has been spoofed.

After doing some research because this is not the first time this has happened.  I discovered it’s now a common practice for scammers to display people’s legitimate phone #s on their your Caller IDs, instead of their own phone number.  What is worse, your legal number may get labeled as a scammer or frequent caller if reported enough, and there is NOTHING the cell phone companies can currently do about it ( or not willing to).

Even worse, it turns out that spoofing a company or your number is not technically illegal under certain circumstances. According to the FCC website and Truth in Caller ID Act, “FCC rules prohibit any person or entity from transmitting misleading or inaccurate caller ID information with the intent to defraud, cause harm, or wrongfully obtain anything of value.”

However, with this law, if there is no intent to harm, in other words, if it is a legitimate business, you can use other numbers. Phone spoofing is legal in cases such as a business displaying their toll-free call-back number or a doctor using their mobile phone and having their office number appear. Even if the intent is to harm or defraud, some of the call centers originate from outside the United States, so they are very hard to regulate or shut down.

Now I know I’m just a simple person, but it seems that some piece of software can be added to the carrier’s systems to verify phone numbers. Basically, undo the hole in their system for calls the happen in the country. If the numbers used don’t belong to the owner, don’t allow the call.

What can you do

Bad news: there are websites that explain HOW to do this…so your number is not safe.
Good News: There are precautions you can take.

20 Things You Should Know About Teen Dating Violence

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

The tragic crime of domestic violence in the United States is often unacknowledged by the public face that our society wears. Behind smiling, couples and seemingly carefree children lurk something that many thoughts was better left unspoken.  While the discussion of domestic violence happens much more often today, bringing light to this terrible crime that makes a home a prison, abuse still occurs, and, often, the children adopt these destructive behavioral patterns both as victims and aggressors

The shocking numbers

  • Annually one in four teens reports verbal, physical, and emotional or sexual abuse.
  • Almost one in five teens reports being a victim of emotional abuse.
  • Almost one in five high school age girls has been physically or sexually abused by their dating partner.
  • One of five college females will experience some form of dating violence.
  • A survey of adolescent and college students revealed that date rape accounted for 67% of sexual assaults.
  • Dating violence among fellow teens is reported by about 54% of high school students.
  • One in three teens reports knowing someone who has been physically hurt by his or her partner through violent actions which included hitting, punching, kicking, slapping, and/or choking.
  • Nearly 80% of teens believe verbal abuse is a serious issue for their age group.

  • Nearly 20% of teen girls who have been in a relationship said that their boyfriend had threatened violence or self-harm in the event of a break-up.
  • Nearly 70% of young women who have been raped knew their rapist; the perpetrator was or had been a boyfriend, friend, or casual acquaintance.
  • The majority of teen dating abuse occurs in the home of one of the partners.
  • About one in three high school students have been or will be involved in an abusive relationship.
  • Forty percent of teenage girls ages 14 to 17 say they know someone their age that has been hit or beaten by a boyfriend.
  • Most abused teens NEVER tell their parents.
  • In one study, from 30% to 50% of female high school students reported having already experienced teen dating violence.
  • In one particular year, 7% percent of all murder victims were young women who were killed by their boyfriends.
  • A survey of 500 young women, ages 15 to 24, found that 60% were currently involved in an ongoing abusive relationship and all participants had experienced violence in a dating relationship.
  • One study found that 38% of date rape victims were young women from 14 to 17 years of age.
  • It is estimated that between 20% to 52% of high school and college age dating couples have engaged in physical abuse.

The sources of these facts come from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, National Center for Victims of Crime Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Maternal and Child Health Bureau, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and other studies.
