10 Safety Tips for Female Joggers

By now many of you may have heard of the tragic news of the college student Woman JoggerMollie Tibbetts s who went for a jog and didn’t return.  While there are some who chose to make this political, the fact is that according to RANN.org someone is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds in the US. Also, according to the Department of Justice Crime data, someone is murdered every six minutes. Not all of these make the national news, in fact, you can do an internet search on Sexual Assault while jogging to see a sample of all the reported cases that don’t make the national news. I’m aware of two incidents in the city where I live making the local news in the last few years, and I’m sure the number of incidents is higher, these are just the ones that made the news.

Women especially young women need to adhere to daily safety practices, habits, and countermeasures to reduce their chances of being a crime statistic.  The wrong frame of mind is that it won’t happen to them. Every one of the women who are sexual assault victims had the same mindset, and wonder why did it happen to them.

Prevention will always be your best self-defense, situational awareness.

  1. Trust your instincts.- If you have a funny feeling about going that way…don’t go that way.
  2. Jog with a friend, a large dog or in a group.
  3. Jog/Walk in well lit and populated areas – greenways and jogging paths are only good if there are lots of people. If you don’t see anyone..go someplace else.
  4. I like exploring unknown areas but for your safety avoid jogging/walking in unknown or isolated areas.
  5. Criminals love concealment of darkness, so avoid late night walks/jogs.
  6. If early morning or late night walks/jogs cannot be avoided travel in well lit, public areas.
  7. Communicate to family members or friends your path, and expected time of return. One of the cool things about the Fitbit app is that it can record your exact location. This is something Mollie
  8. If you can’t hear trouble, you may run right into it, therefore, avoid the distraction of headphones or being on your phone Listen, Be aware.
  9. You are probably being watched, therefore change up the time and path of your walks/jogs. If you are unpredictable then it’s hard for a criminal to plan to attack you.
  10. Pepper Spray and know how to use Pepper Spray. Hold it in your hand, ready to go. 10.

It is a very good idea to have the knowledge of physical self-defense. There are many FREE Classes for women, keep checking online, We often post them on our Twitter Feed or Defense Against Crime Facebook group.

Can carrying Pepper Spray truly make you safer?

If you troll thru this blog you can see a plethora of articles on the usefulness of pepper spray and other self-defense products and techniques.  Will having any of these self-defense products really make you safer?

The short answer is: It depends!

  • It depends on your mindset at the time of the incident
  • It depends on your ability to effectively use Pepper Spray or whatever you have correctly.
  • It depends on …well keep reading.

First, let me state that Pepper Spray is an effective self-defense product that has been used for decades to not only depend on citizens and law enforcement personnel ifbxp35697 used correctly in the right situations.  And the art of this type of defense dates back centuries.

However, there are people who carried or owned pepper spray who have still been crime victims because they were not prepared.  There are a number of reasons why having it didn’t work..for them.

  • They panicked and did not focus on self-defense.
  • They didn’t know how to properly use it
  • They could not get to it, in the bottom of their purse or another inaccessible place.
  • It was a surprise attack and they were caught off guard because they were not paying attention.
  • Your attacker was in the minority of the population that is immune to the effects of Pepper Spray for various reasons.
  • Your pepper spray had expired.
  • The assailant is wearing glasses or was prepared
  • The Pepper Spray was defective and you did not know it.

While this is not an exhaustive list, it probably represents a majority of reasons why just having pepper spray will not help you.  The good news is that many of these issues can be negated with the embracing PepperEyes.com motto…which is Get Ready..Stay Ready.   You can also embrace the motto of the Boy Scouts of America: Be Prepared.

Any self-defense product, including pepper spray, Tasers, or a gun, requires that you be prepared mentally and physically and have it available to use. Pepper Spray, like most weapons, can be taken away from you and then be used against you, if you are not prepared and able to use it at the correct moment. In the case of just owning pepper, spray think of sexual assaults.  It is estimated that 80% to 85% of all sexual assault victims know their attackers and fifty percent of assaults occur inside the victim’s own home. Rapists are not always the stranger in the alley or the weirdo in the parking lot. If a fraction of these victims owned a self-dense product, how prepared are they to use it?   Chances are they were not.

Think about being on a date. Think about going to a party. Ponder the different people you know who may come to your house often.  A deliveryman, a Utility worker, a client.  What is your mindset?  How prepared are you, if you are put in a position of being harmed. What if you have pepper spray or another self-defense product but can’t get to it and use it?

This is why a self-defense mindset and preparation is essential.  When a soldier has run out of bullets and the enemy is coming, there are only two options.  Fight or Flight.  If you can’t get away, how prepared are you to fight? If you can’t use your pepper spray, you have the same two options. How prepared you to fight.

Just something to think about.

Where to keep your Pepper Spray when hiking in the woods?

I had a customer ask  “Is it ok to carry pepper spray in my backpack when I’m hiking?bear-spray-2

My answer was something like this. Just like the advice we give to ladies about having pepper spray in their purse.  Do you really want to see someone coming at you, and then try to find your pepper spray in the bottom of your purse mixed in with your perfume, brush, lipstick, wallet and other stuff you have.  Then take the time to  pull your pepper spray  out, aim it at your attacker and use it correctly in under 5 seconds?  Do you think you could do it?  Try it!

Similarly, if you hear or encounter a wild animal on your trek thru their territory, do you really want to take the time to remove your back pack, kneel down, open your pack and then rummage through your camping/hiking gear in your backpack looking for your animal pepper spray? Again, get your pepper spray, aim it, and use it correctly in the few moments you might have?

NO!   Kneeling down will  make you look more like prey to most animals. Even bending down to pick up sticks or stones makes you look smaller. Look as tall as you can and get your bear pepper spray from your side holster out while maintaining eye contact.

Mind you most animals don’t want to attack you, but will if they are afraid or you happen to get near their young.

And PLEASE don’t say “here kity kitty

September is National Campus Safety Awareness Month

September is National Campus Safety Awareness Month (NCSAM) and people on

campus rape

Teenage girl looking thoughtful about troubles

your campus is thinking about campus safety – the media, parents, students, and especially the higher education professionals working to create healthy and safe campus environments each and every single day.

Although  the nightly news can capture the best – and worst – of the field, there’s one thing  PepperEyes.com  knows to be true: people don’t function well in fear and ignorance; individuals make the best decisions when they are well informed and well prepared, and offered support, and are confident in their knowledge and skills

This Blog has LOTS of guidance and information resources.

As part of National Campus Safety Awareness Month, We want everyone to make Crime Prevention part of their everyday life on or off campus.

It begins with protecting yourself:

  • Take advantage of all the Safety programs that your campus offers
  • If at all possible, never walk alone at night..
  • Stay alert at all times – especially when you are on your phone.
  • If you have to walk alone, walk on well-lighted, well-traveled walkways and plan your route ahead.
  • Avoid walking between parked cars, overgrown shrubs, and dark passageways.
  • If your college has a RAD Class…take it every semester. Repetition makes it better.
  • Carry Pepper Spray or a Stun Gun
  • You are ultimately responsible for your safety and securing your valuables.

Preventing thefts from your vehicles:

  • Always lock the doors and leave the windows rolled up
  • Keep your valuables (especially your electronics) out of sight
  • Do not leave money, checkbooks or credit cards in your vehicle at anytime
  • Put your valuables (laptop or others) in your trunk or well hidden
  • Do not leave your firearms visible in your vehicle

Preventing thefts from your residence:

  • Make your home look occupied, and make it difficult to break in.
  • Lock all outside doors and windows before you leave the house or go to bed. Even if it is for a short time, lock your doors.
  • Leave lights on when you go out. If you are going to be away for a length of time, connect some lamps to automatic timers to turn them on in the evening and off during the day.
  • Keep your garage door closed and locked.
  • Arrange for your lawn to be mowed if you are going away for an extended time.
  • Check your locks on doors and windows and replace them with secure devices  as necessary
  • If you have an alarm system use it, if you don’t have one, consider getting at least a door alarm.

The most important thing you can do is call the police to report a crime or any suspicious activity. You have to be the eyes of your neighborhood. And remember you can always remain a pair of anonymous eyes.

Do I need to carry pepper spray when I’m hiking or camping?

bear-spray-2When you think about dangerous animals in the great outdoors, we think about most about bears and mountain lions encounters. Yes, a wild animal attack can happen in many areas of the United States. But mountain lions and cougars. Here are the facts that we have researched:

Mountain lion attacks on people have increased dramatically since 1986. For example, in California, there were two fatal attacks in 1890 and 1909, and then no further attacks for 77 years, until 1986. From 1986 through 1995, ten verified attacks occurred, an average rate of one per year. That average rate has continued through 1999. Attacks are now numerous enough that there is a support group for attack victims. As the habitat of people reach into their habitats we will see more.

Fatal bear attacks in North America have occurred in a variety of settings. There have been several in the bears’ wilderness habitats involving hikers, hunters, and campers. Brown bear incidents have occurred in their native range spanning Alaska, Northern and Western Canada, and portions of the Rocky Mountains in the United States. The locations of black bear wilderness fatal attacks reflect their wider range: all Canadian Provinces except the Atlantic Provinces and several major mountainous areas in the United States.

In the 2000s, there have been 27 fatal incidences so far in North America, resulting in 29 deaths. 15 were in Canada, three were in Alaska, two were in Tennessee, and single fatal attacks happened in New York, New Mexico, California, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Utah and Montana. 17 of those attacks were perpetrated by black bears, and 10 by grizzlies.
