Don’t Stick Your Hand Way Out When Firing

Q: What is important not to do when using pepper spray in self-defense?

You’ve probably seen those images of people preparing to shoot their assailant with Pepper-Spray-for-Security-of-Womenpepper spray, and sticking their armed hand way out front. With their index finger on the trigger ready to let them have a dose of their defense.

This is the wrong technique for holding pepper spray! Never Ever thrust your shooting hand out in front of you towards the assailant. He or she may react quickly and hit your hand aside or grab your pepper spray.! Never use your index finger to fire, as the thumb is the weakest part of the hand.  Wrap your fingers around the cannister, and use your thumb to fire. This also makes it hard for your assailant try to take your pepper spray.  As you shoot, back up and continue backing up away from the assailant. This gives you a little more time and draws the assailant into the pepper spray.

Also use your unarmed hand as a block, to help prevent your pepper spray from being taken.

In our Free E-Book, we can show you how to properly hold and file your pepper spray, and many other things.

Pepper spray gives you time to escape

OC spray commonly known as Pepper spray or capsicum spray can be used in self-Pepper-Spray-for-Security-of-Womendefense against people, including defense against dogs and bears.  It is a lachrymatory agent which is a chemical compound that irritates the eyes to cause tears, pain and temporary blindness and Its inflammatory effects cause the eyes to close, taking away vision. This temporary blindness allows law enforcement personnel to more easily restrain subjects and permits people using pepper spray for self-defense an opportunity to escape.

The active ingredient in pepper spray is capsaicin, which is a chemical derived from the fruit of plants, including chilies. An emulsifier such as propylene glycol is used to suspend the OC in water and pressurized to make it aerosol in pepper spray.

The OC percentage measures only the amount of chili oil extract contained in the defense spray, not the strength, pungency or effectiveness of the product. Some are very high in SHU (Scoville heat units) or OC in products designed specifically as bear deterrents.  Some pepper spray brands that claim to be the hottest base this on the SHU of the spray before it gets put into the canisters, and not on the ‘hotness’ of the spray when it is expelled.  Before you purchase pepper spray is, look at the pepper spray’s CHR. (Certified Heat Rating). This will tell you how hot the pepper spray is when it comes out of the canisters.

The initial reaction, should the spray be directed at the face of your assailant, is the completely involuntary closing of the eyes (sometimes described as bubbling and boiling as the chemical acts on the skin), an instant sensation of the restriction of the airways and the general feeling of sudden and intense, searing pain around the face, nose and throat. Coughing almost always follows the initial spray. Subsequent breaths through the nose or mouth lead to ingestion of the chemical, which feeds the feeling of choking. The effect can last up to 45 minutes, which gives you the opportunity to escape.

Some models come with UV Dye which will allow you to identify your attacker later.

Capsaicin is not soluble in water, and even large volumes of water will not wash it off. In general, victims are encouraged to blink vigorously in order to encourage tears, which will help flush the irritant from the eyes.

Pepper spray typically comes in canisters, which are often small enough to be carried or concealed in a pocket or purse. Pepper spray also can be purchased concealed in items such as rings.

The term Mace is often confused with pepper spray, Mace used to be a chemical formula, but now it’s a product brand. To learn more, click here:

The Difference between Mace and Pepper Spray

Sometimes people think Pepper Spray and Mace are the same thing.  One hand they can be on the other hand they are not.  Confused?  Well, let’s fix that. There are lots of brand names that are used instead of the name of the actual product. Think of names like Jacuzzi, Zamboni, Kleenex or Crock-Pot.  One type of Mace is a chemical compound and other is a Company brand name that made the chemical compound.

MACE (the actual trademark chemical compound) has not been in use for over 17 years.

Chemical “mace” was first invented in 1965 by Allan Lee Litman, founder and co-owner of Pittsburgh-based General Ordnance Equipment Corporation (GOEC), after his wife, Doris, was threatened on the street . It contained an active ingredient called phenacyl chloride (CN) . In 1987, Chemical Mace was sold to Smith & Wesson and manufactured by their Lake Erie Chemical division. Smith & Wesson subsequently transferred ownership to Jon E. Goodrich along with the rest of the chemical division in what is now Mace Security International. Though the design has been expanded on, the original Chemical Mace formula using only CN has since been discontinued. Due to the potentially toxic nature of CN and the generally superior incapacitating qualities of oleoresin capsicum (OC) pepper spray in most situations, the early CN has been mostly supplanted by OC formulas in police use, although Mace Security International still retains a popular “Triple Action” formula combining CN, OC and an ultraviolet marker dye.

The Mace chemical compound is an irritant that is very similar to tear gas. Mace (the chemical) unlike pepper spray will NOT cause inflammation of the capillaries causing temporary blindness, nausea, make breathing difficult as well as create a very strong burning or stinging sensation. Chemical Mace is dispersed as a liquid that temporarily disables a person; prepared as an aerosol and sprayed in the face, it irritates the eyes and causes dizziness and immobilization

Once the chemical Mace was also under the Mace brand and was used as a primary self-defense product.

However today all of the Mace’s brand products are now are either straight OC Pepper Spray and /or OC /Tear gas combinations or OC Pepper foam. There for the Mace brand is referred to as the product, like chap stick.

Pepper spray (sometimes called  as Mace or capsicum spray) is a lachrymatory agent (a chemical compound that irritates the eyes to cause tears, pain, and temporary blindness). Pepper Spray is used by law enforcement, security, and personal self-defense, including defense against dogs and bears,  alley cats, rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, Wangdoodles, Hornswogglers, Snozzwangers, and rotten, Vermicious Knids.

Pepper Spray with its painful inflammatory effects cause the eyes to close, taking away vision. This temporary blindness allows officers to more easily restrain subjects and permits people using pepper spray for self-defense an opportunity to escape. Although considered a less-than-lethal agent, it has been deadly in rare cases for people with pepper allergies, and concerns have been raised about a number of deaths where being pepper sprayed may have been a contributing factor.

As of this writing, Pepper Spray is legal to carry in all 50 states.

Can carrying Pepper Spray truly make you safer?

If you troll thru this blog you can see plethora of articles on the usefulness of pepper spray and other self-defense products and techniques.  Will having any of these self-defense products really make you safer?

The short answer is: It depends!

  • It depends on your mindset at the time of the incident
  • It depends on your ability to effectively use Pepper Spray or whatever you have correctly.
  • It depend on …well keep reading.

First, let me state that Pepper Spray is an effective self-defense product that has been used for decades to not only depend citizens and law enforcement personnel ifbxp35697 used correctly in the right situations.  And the art of this type of defense dates back centuries.

However, there are people who carried or owned pepper spray who have still been crime victims because they were not prepared.  There are a number of reason why having it didn’t work..for them.

  • They panicked, and did not focus on self-defense.
  • They didn’t know how to properly use it
  • They could not get to it, in the bottom of their purse or other inaccessible place.
  • It was a surprise attack and they were caught off guard because they were not paying attention.
  • Your attacker was in the minority of the population that are immune to the effects of Pepper Spray for various reasons.
  • Your pepper spray had expired.
  • The assailant is wearing glasses or was prepared
  • The Pepper Spray was defective and you did not know it.

While this is not an exhaustive list, it probably represents a majority of reasons why just having pepper spray will not help you.  The good news is that many of these issues can be negated with the embracing PepperEyes.com motto…which is Get Ready..Stay Ready.   You can also embrace the motto of the Boy Scouts of America : Be Prepared.

Any self-defense product, including pepper spray, Tasers, or a gun, requires that you be prepared mentally and physically and have it available to use. Pepper Spray, like most weapons, can be taken away from you and then be used against you, if you are not prepared and able to use it at the correct moment. In the case of just owning pepper, spray think of sexual assaults.  It is estimated that 80% to 85% of all sexual assault victims know their attackers and fifty percent of assaults occur inside the victim’s own home. Rapists are not always the stranger in the alley or the weirdo in the parking lot. If a fraction of these victims owned a self-dense product, how prepared are they to use it?   Chances are they were not.

Think about being on a date. Think about going to a party. Ponder the different people you know who may come to your house often.  A deliveryman, a Utility worker, a client.  What is your mindset?  How prepared are you, if you are put in a position of being harmed. What if you have pepper spray or another self-defense product but can’t get to it and use it?

This is why a self-defense mindset and preparation is essential.  When a soldier has ran out of bullets and the enemy is coming, there are only two options.  Fight or Flight.  If you can’t get away, how prepared are you to fight. If you can’t use your pepper spray, you have the same two options. How prepared you to fight.

Just something to think about.

If you read this blog, you can learn how to develop a self-defense mindset.

What to do if you are pepper sprayed!

Military Pepper Spray 2A few months ago, my sister-in-law give me some ointment called Capzsasin HP because I was having issues with the muscles in my legs. Honestly, I did make the connection. See the active ingredient in Pepper Spray is Capsaicin. Anyway after applying the cream to my legs, I thought I had washed all of it off of my hands. I was laying down and rubbed by face. Sweet-Jesus. First there was this mild burning sensation, so naturally I rubbed it (again touching my face). Over the seconds the burning sensation hit me, and I was thinking of pepper spray..and then the light went on Capsaicin – Capzsasin. The next several minutes was lots of soap and water to the affected area. All I can say, I’m glad I didn’t get an itch in other places.

Now if small amount of cream did that, imagine what full blown pepper spray (or foam or gel) would feel like. If you happen to get pepper spray on your face or in your eyes, you will experience an extremeFaces get pepper spray burning sensation and other effects.  You must immediately rinse your eyes with fresh cool water. If the burning persists or gets worse, seek medical attention. Never EVERY rub your eyes!  One of the effects of Pepper Foam or Gel is that when people get it on their face, their first instinct is to wipe it off, which happens to run the chemical into their face and of course puts it on their hands as well.   If you get pepper spray on your face or hands, wash with a mild soap.  Pepper spray can very be easily transferred. Trust me on that one. If you have pepper spray on your hands, do not touch your face. If you have been testing your pepper spray, assume you have some on your hands. Avoid touching your face for at least an hour after washing your hands. Lemon juice can help neutralize the pepper spray on your hands as well.

If pepper spray is discharged inside the house or in your car or spilled from a leaky sprayer, you may notice burning eyes, scratchy throat, and runny nose. If this happens, open windows and doors to get fresh air circulating in the room. It may take a few hours for the air to completely clear.
