Don’t Let the Grinch Steal Your Christmas

In my last article, I said gave tips for the Christmas shoppers. In this article, I’m going to cover keeping your gifts and personal property safe.  Lot of us window shop during the holidays, including criminals. The difference is that while you’re looking thru store for things to buy, criminals may be looking in your windows for stuff to steal.  While we may have our minds set on Peace on Earth, Goodwill towards men, we often become careless and susceptible to theft and other crime.

The following advice is from the Law Enforcement agencies which can help you be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season. The same advice that I gave in the home invasion series still applies. If you are doing that stuff, you are in good shape.

  • ALWAYS Lock your doors and windows, even if you are leaving home for a quick trip to the neighbors, or need to run to the corner store for a few minutes. A thief only needs opportunity.
  • If you are going to be away from home for hours, days or weeks, have a neighbor or family member watch your house or check it out from time to time. Remember to put your mail and newspapers on hold.
  • If you are going away on vacation please ask your local law enforcement to check your house as you will be out of town
  • Make sure to set your home alarm every time you leave the house.
  • Indoor and outdoor lights should be on an automatic random digital timer.
  • If you have a digital personal assistant (Alexa, Google home) see if they have a security skill you can set.
  • Leave a radio, or other music devices (on Talk Radio) or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied.
  • make sure that large displays of Christmas presents are not visible through the windows and doors of your home.  This provides thieves a motive to rob you.
  • Be cautious where you ‘Hide’ your presents, thieves know to look in storage rooms as well this time of year.
  • When setting up a Christmas tree or other decorations, make sure doors and passageways are clear inside your home.
  • Be sure your Christmas tree is mounted on a sturdy base so children, elderly persons or family pets cannot pull it over on themselves.
  • Have a working fire extinguisher, please remember to shake it the 1st of each month.
  • If you use lights on your Christmas tree ensure the wiring is not damaged or frayed. Frayed or damaged wiring can cause a fire.
  • Place your Christmas tree in water or wet sand to keep it green.
  • Never place wrapping paper in or near your fireplace.
  • Be careful when answering your door.  Criminals also like to take advantage of this season to prey on those who are unsuspecting and generous
    • Be aware of Greeks bearing gifts. Criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts as a means to get you to open your door.
      • Consider installing a doorbell camera that allows you to talk to the person without opening your door.
    • It is not uncommon for criminals to take advantage of the generosity of people during this time of year by soliciting donations door-to-door for charitable causes although no charity is involved.
    • If you are approached by a beggar (er fundraiser), ask for their identification, and find out how the donated funds will be used. If you are not satisfied, do not donate.  Most cities require a special license.
    • Your safest bet is to pick your own charities or just donate to a recognized charitable organization.HolidayCoupon

10 Safety Tips for Female Joggers

By now many of you may have heard of the tragic news of the college student Woman JoggerMollie Tibbetts s who went for a jog and didn’t return.  While there are some who chose to make this political, the fact is that according to RANN.org someone is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds in the US. Also, according to the Department of Justice Crime data, someone is murdered every six minutes. Not all of these make the national news, in fact, you can do an internet search on Sexual Assault while jogging to see a sample of all the reported cases that don’t make the national news. I’m aware of two incidents in the city where I live making the local news in the last few years, and I’m sure the number of incidents is higher, these are just the ones that made the news.

Women especially young women need to adhere to daily safety practices, habits, and countermeasures to reduce their chances of being a crime statistic.  The wrong frame of mind is that it won’t happen to them. Every one of the women who are sexual assault victims had the same mindset, and wonder why did it happen to them.

Prevention will always be your best self-defense, situational awareness.

  1. Trust your instincts.- If you have a funny feeling about going that way…don’t go that way.
  2. Jog with a friend, a large dog or in a group.
  3. Jog/Walk in well lit and populated areas – greenways and jogging paths are only good if there are lots of people. If you don’t see anyone..go someplace else.
  4. I like exploring unknown areas but for your safety avoid jogging/walking in unknown or isolated areas.
  5. Criminals love concealment of darkness, so avoid late night walks/jogs.
  6. If early morning or late night walks/jogs cannot be avoided travel in well lit, public areas.
  7. Communicate to family members or friends your path, and expected time of return. One of the cool things about the Fitbit app is that it can record your exact location. This is something Mollie
  8. If you can’t hear trouble, you may run right into it, therefore, avoid the distraction of headphones or being on your phone Listen, Be aware.
  9. You are probably being watched, therefore change up the time and path of your walks/jogs. If you are unpredictable then it’s hard for a criminal to plan to attack you.
  10. Pepper Spray and know how to use Pepper Spray. Hold it in your hand, ready to go. 10.

It is a very good idea to have the knowledge of physical self-defense. There are many FREE Classes for women, keep checking online, We often post them on our Twitter Feed or Defense Against Crime Facebook group.

Get Ready for College (crime)!

Ready4College_22

College is a fun and exciting time and one of the best times you’ll ever have.  Really… I really loved college and after many decades thanks to social media I’m in touch will people I knew there.  A few years ago I met one of my freshmen professors.

While you’re busy learning new things to help you in your future career or finding new lifelong friends, there will be some you may know who will get a different education and experience unless they take steps to reduce having a negative experience.

Crimes that happen on college campuses include robbery, stalking, Sexual assault, rape, hate crimes, drugs, underage drinking, harassment and more.

If you went to college, or know someone who did… you can ask about these things. They DO happen!  They don’t have to happen to you!

Here Are a few things you can do!

  1. Become aware…simply paying attention can make a difference. Be aware of your surroundings, be aware of your gut feelings, be aware of people, be aware of where the exits are, just pay attention.
  2. Become knowledgeable -what things must you do to make yourself safer. What things other than a laptop should I know how to use.  Many colleges and universities go to great lengths to provide FREE Resources of students to protect their property and well being?
  3. Do it. Knowing all of the above is great ..doing it is better.  It’s like the difference in knowing you should study for your classes, and actually doing it.  Many who fail to do it..don’t make it!

One of the things you should do is have the products that can make you safer… we provide these on our website.  Check out http://www.peppereyes.com/CollegeSafetyProducts.

How to Spot Phishing E-mail!

I was looking in my Hotmail account today and saw this e-mail. It was obvious to me that

ComputerScam

Beware the mail in your in-box

it was fake, but you may not be sure when you get these type of e-mails.  These types of e-mail only purpose is to get your information.

  1. The first tell-tale sign is I don’t have a USAA account.
  2. Look at the email it ends in ‘.de’ which mean it came from Germany.
  3. Companies use their own company name in their e-mail. for example, if the e-mail came from ‘bankofamerica’, then the e-mail would come from bankofamerica.com
  4. It is addressed to DEAR CUSTOMER, not to me specifically.  A company doing business with me knows my name.  When my insurance company email’s me. It has my name.
  5. It creates a sense of urgency. One of the best ways to get customer’s information is to create a sense of urgency, that if you don’t ‘act now’ something bad will happen.
  6. They always want you to click their link.  If you remember what hover your mouse over a link it will show you in the bottom left side of your computer window..where the link is going.  Once again it’s not going to USAA..it’s going to Germany.

spam

What you can do

  1.  DELETE IT – and mark it as spam.
  2. If you do have an account at the institution this is from.  Go to your web browser and type in the URL of the company and log in.  DO NOT USE THE LINK IN THE E-MAIL.  and make sure all is OK with your account.
