Dear Customers,

We closed down the PepperEyes.com – Self Defense Store until we can decide what the next phase will be.
Because of increased competition both on-line and more brick a mortar stores selling self-defense products (WHICH IS A GOOD THING), we were losing money.  So we decided to end that venture, for now.

However, this site will still be up and more articles will be coming.

Thanks for allowing us to serve you.
in the mean time… you can shop at https://www.selfdefensesuperstore.com/

How To Select an Effective OC Pepper Spray?

Ever since the early 1990′s defense sprays such as Tear gas and pepper spray have gained popularity among law-abiding citizens and even criminals. Prior to this, these sprays have been used for decades by law enforcement agencies and military types for crowd control and criminal apprehension. These products are still in use by these agencies. In fact, the next time you encounter a police officer or a mail carrier – ask them why they carry pepper spray. You have probably seen in the news where law enforcement officers have used pepper spray for crowd control. These people depend on this proven product for their protection because they work.

OC Pepper spray uses a derivative of one of the most powerful caustic peppers in the world – the cayenne pepper. The basic ingredient is oleoresin capsicum or OC as it is called.  It is an inflammatory agent which does some nasty non-lethal things to the person on the receiving end of the pepper spray, pepper gel or foam. Because of the known effectiveness of pepper spray, how can you know that the pepper sprays your thinking to buy is any good?

Does the percentage matters?

I did a quick search of the internet and you can see OC Pepper spray comes in different Pepper-Spray-for-Security-of-Womenformulations. You can find concentrations from 1% to about 23%. There are a number of differences in the formulations and delivery systems. The percentage of active ingredient (OC) is not a good indication of how effective it is. For example, a 1% solution can be just as effective as a 10% concentration or more so. However, for most spray formulations, the higher the percentage of OC, the better the spray should work on your attacker. But few sprays are alike, much less equal, like colas.

There are THREE formulation factors for OC Pepper Spray that when combined are used to determine how effective a spray is – they are as follows:

  • The Heat Rating of the OC
  • Type of Carrier Agent
  • The Spray density

Scoville Heat Units

The heat-generating capacity of OC is measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHU). This ScovilleScaleOfPepperHeatmeasurement scale was derived by Wilbur Scoville, a chemist. OC is derived from a variety of hot peppers such as cayenne. Peppers range from zero SHO for standard bell peppers, to 5,000 for jalapeno pepper, and up to 1,463,700 SHU for Trinidad Scorpion pepper. The pungency (or heat factor) of chile peppers is measured in multiples of 100 units. One part of chile “heat” per 1,000,000 drops of water is rated at only 1.5 Scoville Units. Pure Capsaicin, the substance that makes the peppers hot, rates between 15,000,000 and 16,000,000 Scoville Units! Today more scientific and accurate methods like Electrochemistry and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) are used to determine capsaicin levels.

Depending on what kind of pepper is used affects the effectiveness of the spray. A 10% concentration of jalapeno pepper is not going to be nearly as effective as a 1 percent concentration of Dorset Naga peppers. In actual spray formulations, OC from the peppers is processed as mentioned above until it reached a heat rating as high as 2 million SHU. When you purchase pepper spray, don’t look at the concentration, look for how many SHU it generated.

Most pepper spray is stored in a pressurized canister. Each manufacturer keeps its actual formulation for carrier/OC confidential. However, some common carriers are alcohol, keton, a DuPont chemical called Dymel-22, other solvents, and oils and water.

Certified Heat Rating

If you go on the internet, you can find all kinds of claims of companies having “THE Pepper Spray Heat SealBEST” Pepper spray or the “HOTTEST.” We recommend you consider the unbiased results of an independent laboratory* that tests the heat of the pepper once it is sprayed out of the can. The Carrier Agent and Spray Density can affect the actual result of the effectiveness of the Pepper Spray. This Certified Heat Rating (CHR) measures how hot the pepper spray will be once it hits your attacker. The only true way to know the actual effectiveness of a pepper spray is to have it tested by an independent laboratory or by the testimonials of people who have used it. Check the Pepper Spray to see if it has a Certified Heat rating.   What this will tell you is HOW hot the pepper spray is when it comes out of the cannister at the attacker, rather than how hot it was before it was put into the canister.

Other Pepper Spray selection factors to consider

  • Expiration date-The spray’s potency decreases after a certain number of years and shouldn’t be used after the expiration date.  Once it has expired, use the unit to practice using pepper spray in a safe uninhabited place.
  • The number of shots-Pepper sprays have a predetermined number of shots. Keep track or you may find yourself running low at the worst time possible.  We had advice emptying the canister on your attacker and not try to preserve any for the next time.
  • Safety switch– A safety switch will prevent the spray from accidentally going off, which is helpful if you have kids who like to play with things they shouldn’t. Be mindful of this switch at all times.

16. In carjacking or robbery, give them your car, purse or anything else they want. Nothing is worth risking your life.
17. If someone tries to sexually assault you or force you into their vehicle, scream and fight like your life depends on it..cause it does. Do whatever you have to do to get away…do it!
18. Take a self-defense course. Search for them online. Many colleges and universities offer a FREE RAD (Rape aggression defense) class, and some will teach them to the ladies of any organization (church, yoga, etc).
19. There are several safety apps available, including Guard Lallana, Safe Walk, B Safe, and others they are beneficial to you. Research and use the one that’s best for you.

What to look for when shopping for Pepper Spray.

Pepper-Spray-for-Security-of-Women
Many people take time when picking out clothes, toys, cars, and other products, but will grab the sparkly pepper spray displayed next to the counter at the convenient store.
They hope it will do the job when the time comes.

Having oleoresin capsicum (OC) Pepper Spray and knowing how to use it properly can make you a victor and not another crime statistic.

How do you know if that pepper spray you saw at the Convenient Store will do the trick? How about the cheap pepper spray from the internet site WeSellCheapPepperSpray.com?

What should you look for when selecting Pepper Spray to purchase?   After all your life may depend on it being effective against your attacker

Also, don’t get fooled by some brands that have ads in women magazines.  If you pay a magazine or other media enough money, they will print ads for any product wither it works or not! That ‘s how they make some of their revenue. Let’s look at this example. One popular model brags that their pepper spray is legal in all 50 United States. This is absolutely true.  But what does that really mean?  While Pepper Spray is legal for most citizens to carry in all 50 states, some states have strict restrictions on the size and strength you can carry or buy.

This would mean that means that this brand of pepper spray meets the minimal standard allowed by the state with the lowest acceptable.   This would mean that if the lowest rating allowed is 2% OC that is what this pepper spray rating is.  However, other states that do not have restrictions and so you can have 18% or 23% OC.  Which do would you want a mild irritant or bring on some pain pepper Spray?

So what do you need to know about selecting and buying Pepper Spray?  Information and knowledge.  We are going to give you some information that you can ask the person selling the pepper spray, and if they cannot answer many of your questions, you may want to shop somewhere else.  If you do not see most of the information on web sites selling pepper spray, move along. You’ll also let them know when it comes to Pepper Spray, you are no dummy!

Generally, determining the strength of different manufacturers of pepper sprays can be confusing and difficult. Statements a company makes about its product strength are not regulated, so a company can claim almost anything.  A method using the capsaicin (the stuff that makes peppers hot) and related capsaicinoids  (the class of capsicum compounds) (CRC) content of the product is unreliable as well, because there are six different types of capsaicinoids, causing different levels of irritation. Many, manufacturers do not state which particular type of capsaicinoids are used in their brands.   But don’t worry about this.. we can get you the basics of what you need to know to select effective Pepper Spray.

Remember your life may depend know this information. Don’t worry if you don’t know these terms I’ll help you,

•          What is the Scoville Heat Unit (SHU)?- The Scoville scale is a measurement of the pungency (spiciness or “heat”) of chili peppers and other spicy foods, as recorded in Scoville Heat Units (SHU) based on the concentration of capsaicinoids, among which capsaicin is the predominant component. This is usually the rating before the final products are bottled.  Some manufacturers exaggerate their ratings so beware. But in general the higher the number the better,
•          What is the Certified Heat Rating? This is the heat rating of OC Pepper Spray when being delivered out of the canister. This is an independent lab tested rating.  Is this available for you to see?
•          What kind of spray pattern does it have?  There are three types: Stream, Fog, and Cone.
•          How far does it spray? How close do you want your assailant to be when spraying. The effective range can be between 6ft and 25 feet.
•          Delivery methods: Spray, Mist, Gel or Foam

Here is an important tip: Never buy your pepper spray where you buy your beer.
I heard this once and what the guy was saying is are you’re willing to bet your life on Pepper Spray you bought you saw on a shelf without knowing anything about it.

Our Pepper Spray has almost all of this information on our site…because we want you to be Ready and Stay Ready with the best Pepper Spray.
