Don’t Stick Your Hand Way Out When Firing

Q: What is important not to do when using pepper spray in self-defense?

You’ve probably seen those images of people preparing to shoot their assailant with Pepper-Spray-for-Security-of-Womenpepper spray, and sticking their armed hand way out front. With their index finger on the trigger ready to let them have a dose of their defense.

This is the wrong technique for holding pepper spray! Never Ever thrust your shooting hand out in front of you towards the assailant. He or she may react quickly and hit your hand aside or grab your pepper spray.! Never use your index finger to fire, as the thumb is the weakest part of the hand.  Wrap your fingers around the cannister, and use your thumb to fire. This also makes it hard for your assailant try to take your pepper spray.  As you shoot, back up and continue backing up away from the assailant. This gives you a little more time and draws the assailant into the pepper spray.

Also use your unarmed hand as a block, to help prevent your pepper spray from being taken.

In our Free E-Book, we can show you how to properly hold and file your pepper spray, and many other things.

Thank you Lawdy I’ve won the sweepstakes

Yesterday I got a phone call from a friend of mine saying he had won some bletter1ig bucks in sweepstakes.

Right away I go in to ‘It’s a scam mode’.  What he told me is that he had got a call that he won a big prize in the PCH sweepstake, but it wasn’t the grand prize. He had talked to the lawyer and all the taxes had been paid and that they should have the check on Friday!.
Sound too good to be true…right?

I asked if he had actually entered the sweepstakes. He said yes.  One of the biggest red flags is winning a sweepstake you didn’t enter.

So I asked…did he know the lawyer.  He said “No, it was the sweepstakes lawyer…blah blah blah blah”
I said, “Ok, but you know anyone can come on the phone and say they are a lawyer, I get calls from people who claim to be from the IRS, US Commerce Department, you name it”.

And the person went on and on.

So I told him, first I don’t think you pay income taxes on money you haven’t received yet

According to http://mysweepstakescontests.com/online-sweepstakes-to-win/pay-taxes-on-sweepstakes-winnings/

“according to the US law, prize money won in any form should be reported along with your income to the tax authorities by the end of the year when you file your tax accounts without fail.”
So when people mention paying taxes up front… well, let’s just say.. I think it’s a scam.  I’ve gotten a call where the person told me I had won a million dollars, but I needed to pay the taxes via a money gram first.

I asked my friend if they had to pay anything to get this money- They said no.  He also assured me that he did not give the sweepstakes any personal info like Social Security Number, or bank account info.   I hope this is so, but this also serves as a flag, because this serves as a flag.  Hmm, now I’m wondering, how they paid the taxes without the social security number. You should only receive a 1099 Form with basic info.  I need to call him back and ask.

Now, I told him that when they receive the check, to deposit it and not touch it for a month. 1) You want the check to clear – it could be fake. 2) You don’t want the check to be reported as stolen.   I’ve actually received a FAKE cashier’s check. Even the bank could not tell me it was fake. However, after doing some research, I found out that it was a well-known  craigslist scam

I wish my friend well…but remember to be wise and cautious when ‘FREE MONEY’ is involved. Scammer prey on the weak, greedy and desperate.

Follow up:  When the big day came…no one from the PCH Prize Patrol showed up. He as disappointed.

College Sexual Assault is more than just statistics.

According to RAINN.Org – Every 98 seconds, another person experiences sexual assault.

Be careful when off Campus

Sexual violence affects hundreds of thousands of Americans each year. While we’re making progress — the number of assaults has fallen by more than half since 1993 — even today, only 6 out of every 1,000 rapists will end up in prison.   You have seen these numbers; you may have even heard that 1 in 5 College females will be victims of a sexual assault.

Those number in those statistics are more than just numbers – they represent actually victims. That number is someone’s daughter, someone’s girlfriend, or someone’s spouse.  That number is a crime victim.

A southern college campus recently posted information in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.  We have altered some of the details as they are not relevant to this post.  We desire that every college student is aware of such crimes.

  • Incident:  Sex Offense – Fondling
  • Date:  January 2018
  • Time:  9:05PM – 9:10PM
  • Reported to:    City Police Department and College Public Safety
  • Location:  Streets near college campus
  • Suspects’ status:  At-Large (later captured)

Incident description: Female victim was walking west on BANANA Street near ORANGE Street and was approached by a male suspect. The male suspect grabbed the victim’s breast and then ran to a dark gray or black pickup truck which was parked on ORANGE Street just south of BANANA Street. The suspect fled the area southbound on ORANGE Street towards GRAPE Street.

This suspect may have been involved in a simple assault of a female victim in the area of ORANGE Street and Apple Street at approximately 8:50PM.

Suspect Description: White Male; Early to Mid 20s; 5’06”- 5’08”; Heavy Set; Dark Curly Hair; Mustache/Beard; Long Sleeve Brown Flannel Shirt; and Dark Color Pants.

Import Message:  It is important to note that the victim/survivor is never the cause of the criminal offense.

Acquaintances, friends, or current/former romantic partners may assume that since they have had prior intimate encounters, they do not require consent for future sexual acts. Each sexual act requires verbal consent, otherwise, it is a crime. Tactics used by a respondent known to the complainant may include intruding into the complainant’s personal space physically, though seemingly accidental touches or casual hugs or touches. The respondent may play on the complainant’s emotional vulnerability or empathy by “sharing” personal information or stories so that he/she lowers their defenses. The complainant may feel uneasy and uncomfortable, but the respondent assures them that nothing is wrong and continues their assault, ignoring requests to stop.

On many college campuses, alcohol plays a large role in sexual assault. An attacker, often someone the person knows, may encourage or force a complainant to drink alcohol and become intoxicated or may take advantage of a complainant’s intoxication to forcibly assault him/her without consent. Respondents will seek out venues where intoxicated potential victims are likely to be, such as parties and bars. Some will put drugs, such as GHB, Ketamine, or Rohypnol, into a person’s drink to incapacitate them. GHB, also known as Liquid Ecstasy, relaxes a person’s inhibitions, causing drowsiness, and may result in a loss of consciousness. Ketamine, also known as Special K, makes a person feel as if they are separated from their body and detached from reality. Rohypnol, or Roofies, causes a person to become drowsy, dizzy, and lack motor control and coordination. Respondents may also use pressure to try drugs as part of a social event before luring them away from the group.

Approximately 66% of sexual assaults are committed by acquaintances. To reduce the risk of similar crimes from happening, we recommend that everyone familiarize themselves with what constitutes sexual assault and, as a community, be vigilant in stopping it. For example:

  • Always seek consent. Stop your sexual advances if the other person indicates no interest or if they say “no”. Engaging in any type of sexual activity without the explicit consent of your partner is sexual assault. If either party is under the influence of alcohol, consent cannot be given.
  • The absence of a “no” is not a “yes.”
  • Avoid engaging in, supporting, or encouraging sexual harassment.
  • Do NOT use threats or coercion to engage in sexual activity.
  • Call for help if you witness a violent crime.
  • Do not take advantage of someone who is passed out, incoherent or otherwise incapacitated

To Reduce your changes

  • Take a Self-Defense Class like RAD.
  • Carry Pepper Spray
  • Walk with friends when possible.

Pepper spray gives you time to escape

OC spray commonly known as Pepper spray or capsicum spray can be used in self-Pepper-Spray-for-Security-of-Womendefense against people, including defense against dogs and bears.  It is a lachrymatory agent which is a chemical compound that irritates the eyes to cause tears, pain and temporary blindness and Its inflammatory effects cause the eyes to close, taking away vision. This temporary blindness allows law enforcement personnel to more easily restrain subjects and permits people using pepper spray for self-defense an opportunity to escape.

The active ingredient in pepper spray is capsaicin, which is a chemical derived from the fruit of plants, including chilies. An emulsifier such as propylene glycol is used to suspend the OC in water and pressurized to make it aerosol in pepper spray.

The OC percentage measures only the amount of chili oil extract contained in the defense spray, not the strength, pungency or effectiveness of the product. Some are very high in SHU (Scoville heat units) or OC in products designed specifically as bear deterrents.  Some pepper spray brands that claim to be the hottest base this on the SHU of the spray before it gets put into the canisters, and not on the ‘hotness’ of the spray when it is expelled.  Before you purchase pepper spray is, look at the pepper spray’s CHR. (Certified Heat Rating). This will tell you how hot the pepper spray is when it comes out of the canisters.

The initial reaction, should the spray be directed at the face of your assailant, is the completely involuntary closing of the eyes (sometimes described as bubbling and boiling as the chemical acts on the skin), an instant sensation of the restriction of the airways and the general feeling of sudden and intense, searing pain around the face, nose and throat. Coughing almost always follows the initial spray. Subsequent breaths through the nose or mouth lead to ingestion of the chemical, which feeds the feeling of choking. The effect can last up to 45 minutes, which gives you the opportunity to escape.

Some models come with UV Dye which will allow you to identify your attacker later.

Capsaicin is not soluble in water, and even large volumes of water will not wash it off. In general, victims are encouraged to blink vigorously in order to encourage tears, which will help flush the irritant from the eyes.

Pepper spray typically comes in canisters, which are often small enough to be carried or concealed in a pocket or purse. Pepper spray also can be purchased concealed in items such as rings.

The term Mace is often confused with pepper spray, Mace used to be a chemical formula, but now it’s a product brand. To learn more, click here:

Defense sprays should only be purchased by those 18 years of age or older. Certain other restrictions might exist in the area you reside. Be aware that use of the product for other than self-defense purposes might result in a citation or criminal charges depending on several factors.

Is your Airbnb room watching you?

Have you ever seen one of those Lifetime or other movies where a couple rents a room thfrom a seemingly nice person, and then things get weird?  The couple finds out that they are being watched by hidden cameras?

Have you ever seen one of those Lifetime or other movies where a couple rents a room from a seemingly nice person, and then things get weird?  The couple finds out that they are being watched by hidden cameras?

Life does imitate art.

• Airbnb has apologized after one of their guests found a hidden camera in a rental home, which was apparently disguised as a motion detector.
• Florida man was arrested and charged with voyeurism after his Airbnb tenants discovered a hidden camera above the bed hidden in a smoke detector.
• A few years ago, German woman sued Airbnb, for negligence after she discovered a secret cam inside a California residence.
While we believe these events are rare to Airbnb rentals, the fact is there are creeps out there that have more on their minds than providing you’re a nice affordable rental.  So how do you know if you are being watched or even recorded?

Here are a few things you can do to spot a hidden camera.

  • First, inspect the room – examine the room and see if there are any tiny cameras around. It only takes a pinhole camera to see into a room, so look for a small hole on objects or in the wall. Take a look at some of the devices we sell so that you can get a clue how a camera can hide in clocks, picture frames, electrical outlets, motion detectors, smoke detectors,  etc.
  • Use a light – If you shut off the lights in the bedroom and bathroom, use the light on your smartphone or a penlight to scan devices, walls, mirrors, phones, etc. You may be able to spot the reflection from a hidden camera lens.  Take your time doing this and look at multiple angles. If you see a light in a place where there should be like a flowerpot you may have found a camera. Use a phone app, hidden camera detector You can download free or inexpensive hidden camera phone apps from the iStore or Google play store and purchase inexpensive bug and hidden camera detectors detect signals.
  • If you suspect that you are being spied on, and need proof, we have a solution. With this light-weight and easy to use Full Range Camera and Bug Detector you will be able to find all types of hidden cameras and other devices (wired and wireless) BugDetector_CC308-Package
