Ransomware Attack!

If you have not watched the news, or just haven’t paid attention, there is a worldwide ransom-ware attack that began last week and may continue this week. The New York Times has an active map showing where all the attacks have been happening. You can google it or see this link  (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/05/12/world/europe/wannacry-ransomware-map.html?_r=0)

If you want to keep up to date on the latest on this event, just watch the news or do an internet search on the topic.

If you want to know more about Ransom-ware we have written about this before. You can open these previous posts.

Victims of ransomware usually receive an e-mail or some other type of electronic message that asks them to download or run software. Some of these e-mails may appear as if they were coming from someone you know, or can even come from a software hack (like a cracked version of some game or popular software).  When you run the software and it appears that NOTHING is happening, .. something is.WannaCrypt

The software will encrypt your hard drive, or encrypt part of your hard drive so that your computer is still operable and you can continue to use it, but you cannot access all your personal files. This includes all personal documents, images, music files.

If you are the victim of a ransomware attack you’ll open your computer and instead of your normal files you’ll see a pop-up appear that says, ‘Surprise, we’ve taken control of your computer and if you want access to your files you need to pay us.'”

Here are some things you can do to prevent being a victim.

  1. Please update your computer security software as soon as releases are available. It’s best to set it to auto update.
  2.  Please run all software and OS patches. Again please set it to auto update.
  3. If you value your files back up your computer on an external drive on regular intervals. You may want invest in a cloud backup service. You can search for and review them.
  4.  Finally, just be very vigilant you need to constantly look out for emails that seem suspicious, and you need to err on the side of not downloading random files. Delete them. We often receive random invoices, and reports that seemingly credible companies send us. Like Bank of America, or UPS. Sometime I get invitations to download a file from a cousin.  If you know the e-mail is fake, delete it.  You can always verify before opening any attachment that your cousin actually did send the files

How to protect your package deliveries from Porch Pirates

This year’s Christmas  Online shopping  expected to exceed  $82 billion, according to most porch-pirateindustry analysts, with upward of 121 million shoppers who planned to click “buy” on Cyber Monday alone.

That’s a lot of packages that will need delivery, and a lot of potential booty for opportunistic thieves.

Last Christmas season, home video camera caught delivery personnel mishandling packages, this year with the increase of home security cameras, the images are capturing something else …thieves labeled as “Porch Pirates

These “Porch Pirates,” as they are being called  typically tail a delivery driver and pounce on the merchandise as soon as the driver is out of sight. They also cruise subdivisions looking for possible targets.

This summer a couple in Lodi set up a home security camera to help monitor who is coming to their house. The camera did capture something interesting a porch pirates. After a few incidents of having packages stolen they couple retaliated by filling a box full of fecal matter f or the thieves.

In various subdivisions a scan of the Nextdoor social network  tells the all-too-familiar tale: A package, waiting for its recipient to come home, is snatched off the front stoop, often in broad daylight and sometimes in clear view of security cameras.

“It’s an easy target,” said one evening deliver service owner, in response to a problem one of his own neighbors experienced. “Usually there’s something of value in there, and there’s nobody watching over it.”

But consumers have plenty of options for protecting their holiday bounty and their packages all year, experts said, from requiring a signature on all deliveries to having their packages sent elsewhere for safekeeping.

What  Can you Do?

The U.S. Postal Service, which expects to deliver 600 million packages nationwide over the holidays, recommends the following:

  • ask friend or neighbor to pick up your mail if you know a package is coming that day;
  • Have packages sent to your place of employment or to a family member or friend who can accept it for you during daytime hours.
  • if possible; using services that require a signature on delivery; or even renting a P.O. box.
  • Any mail theft should be reported to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and to local police, she said. Complaints can be filed online at  US Postal Inspector Site
  • Always require a signature on delivery.
  • Provide instructions to the shipping company on where packages can be left securely and out of sight. You can opt to pick them up at the delivery company.
  • Insure all your packages.
  • Install a Security Camera to capture any illicit activities that you can then give to law enforcement if necessary. Many security companies are now offering motion activated doorbell cameras that will give a better facial image of people coming on your porch.

Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is a time for enjoyment…not harm!

At PepperEyes, we believe your personal safety and protection plan should include a variety of knowledge, tools and techniques to keep you and your loved ones safe year round. Whether you’re a single, a young professional, or the head of your household – the best plan is one that evolves and is practiced over time and improves as new strategies and tools come on the market.

This Halloween, make sure your family’s experience is full of treats, not tricks, with these Top Halloween Safety Tips to include in your personal protection plan:

  1. Be Car Aware – Car accidents involving pedestrians see a sharp spike every Halloween – do not become a statistic! Make sure everyone is always looking both ways before crossing the street (hand-holding recommended but not required).
    1. Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
    2. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
    3. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars
  1. Adult Avoid Driving During Peak Trick-or-Treating Times – On the same note, play it cool for the night and stay off the road for a few hours while the little creatures roam. Pedestrian traffic and drunk-driving numbers are at an all-time high on Halloween night.
    1. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
    2. Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
    3. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.
  2. Keep Eye on Road, not your phone  – Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
  3. Stay in Familiar Areas – Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.
  4. Stick Together – Nobody wants to go looking for a missing Princess in the middle of the Halloween party, so keep an eye on your friends.
  5. Keep the Tricks to a Minimum – Not everyone shares the same Halloween spirit, so don’t turn your night of fun into a night of fright. Understand the dangers of “harmless” pranks like egging, ding-dong ditching, and scaring innocent trick-or-treaters. Your safety my depend on common sense.

Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe

  • Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.
  • Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.
  • Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
  • Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as “one size fits all,” or “no need to see an eye specialist,” obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss.
  • Review with children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they ever have an emergency or become lost.

Keep your Pets Safe

  • Keep your pet away from the front door – Dogs in particular need to protect their home and may bite bizarre looking visitors or become frightened.
  • Ensure decorations cannot be pulled down – Your pets can become injured or entangled in your holiday and cause harm to themselves in their panic to get free.
  • Do not take your pet with you in the care while your child(ren) are trick-or-treating – Scarry creatures of every size and shape walking by the car may be very frightening to your pet sitting in a dark car. Your friendly pet may become not-so-friendly.
  • Do not give your pet candy – certain treats like chocolate, caramel apples, or other chemicals can be lethal to your pet.
  • Keep your pet in a safe location – There are lots of stories of vicious pranksters who have teased, injured or stolen pets in their yard or have freed them to roam outside at night.

Defending your Castle

The average American Homeowners have an average of $200,000 invested in their home

burglary004

Are you an Easy Target

and an average of another $100,000 in furnishings and goodies to make the place look like a castle that it is. This includes computers, televisions, DVD players, etc. That makes them great targets for burglars looking for an easy in and out hit. They are looking for cash and merchandise that can be easily fenced for cash at the local pawn shop to feed their drug habits or short term financial needs.

FBI statistics from 2004 show the value of goods stolen in burglaries to be on average about $1600. For the 2.143 million burglaries that is $34,288,000. That doesn’t take into account any damage done in the process.

Property crimes are slowly increasing according to the FBI stats but burglaries are up .6% from 2004 to 2006. A home burglary happens every 15 seconds mostly because homeowners make it so darn easy.

The process begins with the crooks picking out a home that looks like an easy score. They case neighborhoods looking for affluent homes with plenty of cover to hide themselves and the most important thing they look for is SIGNAGE.

Signage is a cheap trick to protect your home without spending a fortune to do so. It should be the first step in fortifying your castle from invaders. It should not be the only thing you do either.
Signage is high on the bad guys’ checklist because it gives them an indication of any trouble they may be getting themselves into. It may indicate if there’s a dog on the property. (Even if you don’t have a dog) It can indicate if the premises are guarded by a security company or not. Signage may give a clue on alarms in the house.
You get the idea and so does the bad guy who is looking for an easy target. He’ll look for these signs before he picks a target. Why would he knowingly pick a house that is protected in some way making it more difficult over a home that is not? He usually won’t!
Signage can come in many flavors. Pick yours and pick many the more the merrier.

Advertising works, even in the criminal world. Let the bad guys know they are in for a hard time and chances are they will stay away and pick another target. Let them play in somebody else’s house.

What to do when strangers move into your house!

After two long weeks away on vacation, you’re finally home. It was a great trip, but now

"She says she's got squatters rights."

you’re at the front door of your residence. You open your front door and take a step inside. Then you notice that something’s wrong. The lights are on, but you don’t have a timer rigged up. There’s a half a box of pizza and some drinks on your coffee table and a bath towel draped over the back of your lazy-boy. You’re hit with a jolt of adrenaline — a burglar’s been in your home. Before you can react, a guy wanders into the room. He’s wearing your favorite bath robe. “Who are you?” he asks.

You scan the apartment. Yes, this is your place. Your stuff’s all here, but it’s being used by someone else. Friend, you’ve got yourself a squatter.  The squatter may not be a cute little girl who ate your porridge, sat in your chairs, and slept in your bed.

Your home is where you should feel safe. It is where you let your guard down and perform your most personal routines. It is where you are most vulnerable. So what if someone broke into your house and was hiding somewhere? It’s the stuff of urban legends, but the following stories are anything but fictional.

Squat happens

Think this is an urban myth .. it is not. It happens. You can actually google stories of this. Perhaps you heard the story of A Washington state man made that made a startling discovery when he arrived at his home a few weeks ago.

Davis Wahlman, of Green Lake, said that when he got to his house he found a couple of lights on and his bathroom window screen in his tub, but said nothing strange dawned on him until he heard some noises coming from his attic the next morning.

“I am kind of jolted out of bed,” Wahlman said. “I hear rummaging around above me, which I know is the attic so I’m like ‘That’s kind of weird.'”

Wahlman tried to figure out what in fact was going on and noticed a light that was on in his office space. The door was locked and when he knocked, he got no response. He then heard a woman’s voice coming from the room.

“‘Jimmy? Is that you, Jimmy?'” Wahlman explained. “I’m like ‘No, it’s not Jimmy. Who is this and why are you in my house?'”

One of the residents of my subdivision had something similar to this happen to him. He came home to find someone sleeping in his home.

Now you think, that’s OK I’ll just call the police…and get them out.  Not so quick.

If police find squatters, there’s not a whole lot they can do. Police uphold criminal law. Squatting is a civil crime. Civil law is worked out in the courts. Once police determine that a squatter has established some sort of tenancy, the issue becomes a civil matter. By settling into a home in a generally respectable manner, a squatter can create the appearance of tenants’ rights. This appearance alone can confound an easy rousting of squatters.

What is a squatter?

Squatters are people who move into abandoned, foreclosed, or otherwise unoccupied homes or premises. Generally, under United States law, the owners can have a squatter evicted for violating loitering or trespassing laws, unless the squatters can establish that they have tenants’ rights or can gain adverse possession due to the property having been completely abandoned by the owner. Other countries have similar laws, although you should seek specific legal advice dependent on where you are. If you suspect you have squatters in your neighborhood contact the police and the home owners, but stay calm and let the authorities deal with the situation.

What the squat can you do?

  1. Identify the signs of squatting – Keep an eye out on your neighbor’s if they are away or abandoned houses in your neighborhood.
  2. Evaluate the Situation – try to determine if those person have a legal right to be there. You can just calmly talk to them.
  3. Speak to your neighbors – see if anyone else in the neighborhood as additional information.
  4. Know the laws in your city and state regarding abandoned property – as mentioned above getting rid of squatters may not be straight forward. Know what legal steps are available to you to remove squatters. Do not take the removal process upon yourself.
  5. How to deal with squatters
    1. Contact the Police
    2. Contact the property owner, if it is not your home
    3. Determine your grounds for action – depending what they did in your home you may have lots to do.
  6. To Reduce your chances for getting squatters
    1. Have a Home Alarm
    2. Have Internal and external Cameras
    3. Have your Neighbors watch your house when you are going to be away for awhile
    4. Let the Police know you will be out of town and who has access to your house
