Thank you Lawdy I’ve won the sweepstakes

Yesterday I got a phone call from a friend of mine saying he had won some bletter1ig bucks in sweepstakes.

Right away I go in to ‘It’s a scam mode’.  What he told me is that he had got a call that he won a big prize in the PCH sweepstake, but it wasn’t the grand prize. He had talked to the lawyer and all the taxes had been paid and that they should have the check on Friday!.
Sound too good to be true…right?

I asked if he had actually entered the sweepstakes. He said yes.  One of the biggest red flags is winning a sweepstake you didn’t enter.

So I asked…did he know the lawyer.  He said “No, it was the sweepstakes lawyer…blah blah blah blah”
I said, “Ok, but you know anyone can come on the phone and say they are a lawyer, I get calls from people who claim to be from the IRS, US Commerce Department, you name it”.

And the person went on and on.

So I told him, first I don’t think you pay income taxes on money you haven’t received yet

According to http://mysweepstakescontests.com/online-sweepstakes-to-win/pay-taxes-on-sweepstakes-winnings/

“according to the US law, prize money won in any form should be reported along with your income to the tax authorities by the end of the year when you file your tax accounts without fail.”
So when people mention paying taxes up front… well, let’s just say.. I think it’s a scam.  I’ve gotten a call where the person told me I had won a million dollars, but I needed to pay the taxes via a money gram first.

I asked my friend if they had to pay anything to get this money- They said no.  He also assured me that he did not give the sweepstakes any personal info like Social Security Number, or bank account info.   I hope this is so, but this also serves as a flag, because this serves as a flag.  Hmm, now I’m wondering, how they paid the taxes without the social security number. You should only receive a 1099 Form with basic info.  I need to call him back and ask.

Now, I told him that when they receive the check, to deposit it and not touch it for a month. 1) You want the check to clear – it could be fake. 2) You don’t want the check to be reported as stolen.   I’ve actually received a FAKE cashier’s check. Even the bank could not tell me it was fake. However, after doing some research, I found out that it was a well-known  craigslist scam

I wish my friend well…but remember to be wise and cautious when ‘FREE MONEY’ is involved. Scammer prey on the weak, greedy and desperate.

Follow up:  When the big day came…no one from the PCH Prize Patrol showed up. He as disappointed.

How to protect your package deliveries from Porch Pirates

This year’s Christmas  Online shopping expected to exceed  $82 billion, according to most porch-pirateindustry analysts, with upward of 121 million shoppers who planned to click “buy” on Cyber Monday alone.

That’s a lot of packages that will need the delivery and a lot of potential booty for opportunistic thieves.

Last Christmas season, a home video camera caught delivery personnel mishandling packages, this year with the increase of home security cameras, the images are capturing something else …thieves labeled as “Porch Pirates

These “Porch Pirates,” as they are being called typically tail a delivery driver and pounce on the merchandise as soon as the driver is out of sight. They also cruise subdivisions looking for possible targets.

This summer a couple in Lodi set up a home security camera to help monitor who is coming to their house. The camera did capture something interesting a porch-pirates. After a few incidents of having packages stolen the couple retaliated by filling a box full of fecal matter for the thieves.

In various subdivisions a scan of the Nextdoor social network tells the all-too-familiar tale: A package, waiting for its recipient to come home, is snatched off the front stoop, often in broad daylight and sometimes in clear view of security cameras.

“It’s an easy target,” said one evening delivery service owner, in response to a problem one of his own neighbors experienced. “Usually there’s something of value in there, and there’s nobody watching over it.”

But consumers have plenty of options for protecting their holiday bounty and their packages all year, experts said, from requiring a signature on all deliveries to having their packages sent elsewhere for safekeeping.

What  Can You Do?

The U.S. Postal Service, which expects to deliver 600 million packages nationwide over the holidays, recommends the following:

  • ask friend or neighbor to pick up your mail if you know a package is coming that day;
  • Have packages sent to your place of employment or to a family member or friend who can accept it for you during daytime hours.
  • if possible; using services that require a signature on delivery, or even renting a P.O. box.
  • Any mail theft should be reported to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and to local police, she said. Complaints can be filed online at  US Postal Inspector Site
  • Always require a signature on delivery.
  • Provide instructions to the shipping company on where packages can be left securely and out of sight. You can opt to pick them up at the delivery company.
  • Insure all your packages.
  • Install a Security Camera to capture any illicit activities that you can then give to law enforcement if necessary. Many security companies are now offering motion-activated doorbell cameras that will give a better facial image of people coming on your porch.
  • Consider installing a Doorbell Camera- it allows you to not only see who comes on your porch but also allows you to talk to them.

Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is a time for enjoyment…not harm!

At PepperEyes, we believe your personal safety and protection plan should include a variety of knowledge, tools and techniques to keep you and your loved ones safe year round. Whether you’re a single, a young professional, or the head of your household – the best plan is one that evolves and is practiced over time and improves as new strategies and tools come on the market.

This Halloween, make sure your family’s experience is full of treats, not tricks, with these Top Halloween Safety Tips to include in your personal protection plan:

  1. Be Car Aware – Car accidents involving pedestrians see a sharp spike every Halloween – do not become a statistic! Make sure everyone is always looking both ways before crossing the street (hand-holding recommended but not required).
    1. Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
    2. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
    3. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars
  1. Adult Avoid Driving During Peak Trick-or-Treating Times – On the same note, play it cool for the night and stay off the road for a few hours while the little creatures roam. Pedestrian traffic and drunk-driving numbers are at an all-time high on Halloween night.
    1. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
    2. Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
    3. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.
  2. Keep Eye on Road, not your phone  – Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
  3. Stay in Familiar Areas – Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.
  4. Stick Together – Nobody wants to go looking for a missing Princess in the middle of the Halloween party, so keep an eye on your friends.
  5. Keep the Tricks to a Minimum – Not everyone shares the same Halloween spirit, so don’t turn your night of fun into a night of fright. Understand the dangers of “harmless” pranks like egging, ding-dong ditching, and scaring innocent trick-or-treaters. Your safety my depend on common sense.

Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe

  • Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.
  • Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.
  • Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
  • Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as “one size fits all,” or “no need to see an eye specialist,” obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss.
  • Review with children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they ever have an emergency or become lost.

Keep your Pets Safe

  • Keep your pet away from the front door – Dogs in particular need to protect their home and may bite bizarre looking visitors or become frightened.
  • Ensure decorations cannot be pulled down – Your pets can become injured or entangled in your holiday and cause harm to themselves in their panic to get free.
  • Do not take your pet with you in the care while your child(ren) are trick-or-treating – Scarry creatures of every size and shape walking by the car may be very frightening to your pet sitting in a dark car. Your friendly pet may become not-so-friendly.
  • Do not give your pet candy – certain treats like chocolate, caramel apples, or other chemicals can be lethal to your pet.
  • Keep your pet in a safe location – There are lots of stories of vicious pranksters who have teased, injured or stolen pets in their yard or have freed them to roam outside at night.

Defending your Castle

The average American Homeowners have an average of $200,000 invested in their home

burglary004

Are you an Easy Target

and an average of another $100,000 in furnishings and goodies to make the place look like a castle that it is. This includes computers, televisions, DVD players, etc. That makes them great targets for burglars looking for an easy in and out hit. They are looking for cash and merchandise that can be easily fenced for cash at the local pawn shop to feed their drug habits or short term financial needs.

FBI statistics from 2004 show the value of goods stolen in burglaries to be on average about $1600. For the 2.143 million burglaries that is $34,288,000. That doesn’t take into account any damage done in the process.

Property crimes are slowly increasing according to the FBI stats but burglaries are up .6% from 2004 to 2006. A home burglary happens every 15 seconds mostly because homeowners make it so darn easy.

The process begins with the crooks picking out a home that looks like an easy score. They case neighborhoods looking for affluent homes with plenty of cover to hide themselves and the most important thing they look for is SIGNAGE.

Signage is a cheap trick to protect your home without spending a fortune to do so. It should be the first step in fortifying your castle from invaders. It should not be the only thing you do either.
Signage is high on the bad guys’ checklist because it gives them an indication of any trouble they may be getting themselves into. It may indicate if there’s a dog on the property. (Even if you don’t have a dog) It can indicate if the premises are guarded by a security company or not. Signage may give a clue on alarms in the house.
You get the idea and so does the bad guy who is looking for an easy target. He’ll look for these signs before he picks a target. Why would he knowingly pick a house that is protected in some way making it more difficult over a home that is not? He usually won’t!
Signage can come in many flavors. Pick yours and pick many the more the merrier.

Advertising works, even in the criminal world. Let the bad guys know they are in for a hard time and chances are they will stay away and pick another target. Let them play in somebody else’s house.

Thieves Caught on Camera

If you do a search on the internet on home burglaries caught on camera you may get a fairhaven-break-inshock.  Try to wrap your mind around these statistics from the US Department of Justice. n estimated 3.7 million household burglaries occurred each year on average from 2003 to 2007. In about 28% of these burglaries, a household member was present during the burglary. In 7% of all household burglaries, a household member experienced some form of violent victimization,

Last week, in a subdivision not too far from me, two home break-in incidents were recorded on the home security camera of the homeowners.

13254048_10154259095274052_808204983524604383_nIn one incident, the surveillance camera shows one suspect walking up to the door with a clipboard as if he was going to sell something. The video showed that he had a sales pen as if he was a salesperson. The suspect knocked on the door a couple times. Nobody answered. He looked around, looked right at the camera right here, and then you see him ducking and looking through the window.”

The video also shows the alleged salesperson leave the residence. Less than one minute later, you see another suspect creeping through the backyard on a different camera.  This suspect goes to the back door, he breaks out the window, does not open the door, but climbs through the window.

The homeowner arrived home later in the day and noticed that the gate to her back yard was open. Upon entering her home, she noticed the back door had been shattered.

An interior surveillance video shows the family cat, Leo, run away as the man who broke-in walks up the steps and into the master bedroom.

The suspect took lots of valuable jewelry and then climbed back out the window.

The video footage shows the suspect squat low, gets on his walkie-talkie or phone and is telling the guy, I’m done, come and get me.”

In another incident, a homeowner came home and felt something wasn’t right. So we rewound the video on his hidden interior camera and saw a burglar open a window, go directly to his bed room and leave a minute later with a pillow case containing his haul.

Remember those statistics from above. How close are robberies from you.  Over the past few years some sub divisions have seen a rash of burglaries for thieves who have surveyed the subdivisions they are going to hit.  If you want to reduce your chances of being a target then please look at some of our other blog entries on things you can do to beef up your home security.

While I do recommend real video camera as part of your home security countermeasures, we also would recommend that you have some type of audible alarm system on all your doors and windows, along with security stickers that warn would be thieves.  We also recommend that your interior camera have a motion detection system that will either activate your alarm system or send your notification if motion is detected in your home. Some alarm system companies can configure your system so that small animals like cats or small dogs will not trip your alarm system. This was you will know within a few moments if someone is in your residence when you are not home.

For those that want a good security system without the expense of a costly monthly fee, there are motion detection camera that you can purchase that have these features.  If you are interested in such a camera system then please check out the these products available from PepperEyes.com
