A Few Tips To Help You Stay Safe

  • If someone knocks on the door that you were not expecting or are not comfortable stalkers10n-1-webtalking to, do not answer the door. Make sure they know you are still home and that it is not an empty house, so they don’t break in, however, tell them to leave and that if they don’t, you will call the police. There are lots of products on the market to allow you to see who is there, without opening your door, including fish-eye peepholes, to cameras.
  • Have clear areas, exterior lights and trimmed bushes around your house so that no one can hide outside.
  • Pay attention while walking in parking lots and out in public and try not to carry lots of things in your hands. This can make you an easy target.
  • Before you walk back to your car in public, have your keys and pepper spray out and ready, This way you aren’t making yourself an easy target as you search for them in your purse or pockets.
  • Appear confident and make eye contact with people in public as much as possible. People are less likely to attack you if it appears you will fight back.
  • Keep texting or using social media to a minimum when walking in public, multitasking can inhibit you from being aware of your surroundings.
  • Save the non-emergency police dispatch numbers in your  phone contacts where it is easily accessible.
  • If there is an emergency, call 911.

Don’t Stick Your Hand Way Out When Firing

Q: What is important not to do when using pepper spray in self-defense?

You’ve probably seen those images of people preparing to shoot their assailant with Pepper-Spray-for-Security-of-Womenpepper spray, and sticking their armed hand way out front. With their index finger on the trigger ready to let them have a dose of their defense.

This is the wrong technique for holding pepper spray! Never Ever thrust your shooting hand out in front of you towards the assailant. He or she may react quickly and hit your hand aside or grab your pepper spray.! Never use your index finger to fire, as the thumb is the weakest part of the hand.  Wrap your fingers around the cannister, and use your thumb to fire. This also makes it hard for your assailant try to take your pepper spray.  As you shoot, back up and continue backing up away from the assailant. This gives you a little more time and draws the assailant into the pepper spray.

Also use your unarmed hand as a block, to help prevent your pepper spray from being taken.

In our Free E-Book, we can show you how to properly hold and file your pepper spray, and many other things.

College Sexual Assault is more than just statistics.

According to RAINN.OrgEvery 98 seconds, another person experiences sexual assault.

080913_1526_10BacktoSch1.jpg

Be careful when off Campus

Sexual violence affects hundreds of thousands of Americans each year. While we’re making progress — the number of assaults has fallen by more than half since 1993 — even today, only 6 out of every 1,000 rapists will end up in prison.   You have seen these numbers; you may have even heard that 1 in 5 College females will be victims of a sexual assault.

Those number in those statistics are more than just numbers – they represent actual people who have been violated. That number is someone’s daughter, someone’s girlfriend, or someone’s spouse.  That number is a crime victim.

A southern college campus recently posted information in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.  We have altered some of the details as they are not relevant to this post.  We desire that every college student is aware of such crimes.

  • Incident:  Sex Offense – Fondling
  • Date:  January 2018
  • Time:  9:05PM – 9:10PM
  • Reported to:    City Police Department and College Public Safety
  • Location:  Streets near a college campus
  • Suspects’ status:  At-Large (later captured)

Incident description: the Female victim was walking west on Banana Street near Orange Street and was approached by a male suspect. The male suspect grabbed the victim’s breast and then ran to a dark gray or black pickup truck which was parked on Orange Street just south of Banana Street. The suspect fled the area southbound on Orange Street towards Grape Street.

This suspect may have been involved in a simple assault of a female victim in the area of ORANGE Street and Apple Street at approximately 8:50PM.

Suspect Description: White Male; Early to Mid 20s; 5’06”- 5’08”; Heavy Set; Dark Curly Hair; Mustache/Beard; Long Sleeve Brown Flannel Shirt; and Dark Color Pants.

Import Message:  It is important to note that the victim/survivor is never the cause of the criminal offense.

Acquaintances, friends, or current/former romantic partners may assume that since they have had prior intimate encounters, they do not require consent for future sexual acts. Each sexual act requires verbal consent, otherwise, it is a crime. Tactics used by a respondent known to the complainant may include intruding into the complainant’s personal space physically, though seemingly accidental touches or casual hugs or touches. The respondent may play on the complainant’s emotional vulnerability or empathy by “sharing” personal information or stories so that he/she lowers their defenses. The complainant may feel uneasy and uncomfortable, but the respondent assures them that nothing is wrong and continues their assault, ignoring requests to stop.

On many college campuses, alcohol plays a large role in sexual assault. An attacker, often someone the person knows, may encourage or force a complainant to drink alcohol and become intoxicated or may take advantage of a complainant’s intoxication to forcibly assault him/her without consent. Respondents will seek out venues where intoxicated potential victims are likely to be, such as parties and bars. Some will put drugs, such as GHB, Ketamine, or Rohypnol, into a person’s drink to incapacitate them. GHB, also known as Liquid Ecstasy, relaxes a person’s inhibitions, causing drowsiness, and may result in a loss of consciousness. Ketamine, also known as Special K, makes a person feel as if they are separated from their body and detached from reality. Rohypnol, or Roofies, causes a person to become drowsy, dizzy, and lack motor control and coordination. Respondents may also use pressure to try drugs as part of a social event before luring them away from the group.

Approximately 66% of sexual assaults are committed by acquaintances. To reduce the risk of similar crimes from happening, we recommend that everyone familiarize themselves with what constitutes sexual assault and, as a community, be vigilant in stopping it. For example:

  • Always seek consent. Stop your sexual advances if the other person indicates no interest or if they say “no”. Engaging in any type of sexual activity without the explicit consent of your partner is sexual assault. If either party is under the influence of alcohol, consent cannot be given.
  • The absence of a “no” is not a “yes.”
  • Avoid engaging in, supporting, or encouraging sexual harassment.
  • Do NOT use threats or coercion to engage in sexual activity.
  • Call for help if you witness a violent crime.
  • Do not take advantage of someone who is passed out, incoherent or otherwise incapacitated

To Reduce your changes

  • Take a Self-Defense Class like RAD.
  • Carry Pepper Spray
  • Walk with friends when possible.

You’ve been hit by A smooth criminal

As he came into the window
It was the sound of a crescendo090610_webcamthieves
He came into her apartment
He left the bloodstains on the carpet
She ran underneath the table
He could see she was unable
So she ran into the bedroom
She was struck down, it was her doom

Or so the famous Michael Jackson song goes….

Many criminals are smart and crafty as the following examples will show you.

I used to tell ladies that if they went to have their cars services, to never give their whole set of keys to the mechanic. It would be easy for a dishonest one to make a copy of your house keys, and since they probably have your address and phone number on record. They can call you to see if you are home, or sit and wait to see you leave, and then have access to your house.  You may have heard this advice as well.

(You’ve been struck by A smooth criminal)

LONG TERM PARKING:

A citizen left their car in the long-term parking at San Jose while away, and someone broke into the car. Using the information on the car’s registration in the glove compartment, they drove the car to the people’s home in Pebble Beach and robbed it.

TIP: if you are going to leave the car in long-term parking, you should NOT leave the any documentation that will indicate where you live, or any other valuables. Also, never leave your remote garage door opener. This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology.

GPS:

A Sports fan had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard for anyone to see. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents.

(You’ve been struck by A smooth criminal)

Something to consider if you have a GPS – don’t put your home address in it… Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen.  How many times do we have to tell you not to leave valuables in your car, and just think how valuable a home alarm system would have been.

CELL PHONES:

This young lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her cell phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her unlocked cell phone, credit card, wallet, etc., was stolen. Twenty minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone (they still have these?) telling him what had happened, hubby says, “I received your text asking about our Pin number and I’ve replied a little while ago.” When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text “hubby” in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.

(You’ve been struck by A smooth criminal)

Moral of the lesson:

  1. Most many modern cell phones have many means to secure your phone, use them.
  2. Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc.
  3. And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back.
  4. Also, when you’re being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don’t reach them, be very careful about going places to meet “family and friends” who text you.

PURSE IN THE GROCERY CART SCAM:

A lady went grocery-shopping at a local mall and left her purse sitting in the children’s seat of the cart while she reached something off a shelf… wait till you read the WHOLE story! Her wallet was stolen, and she reported it to the store personnel. After returning home, she received a phone call from the Store Security to say that they had her wallet and that although there was no money in it, it did still hold her personal papers. She immediately went to pick up her wallet, only to be told by Security that they had not called her. By the time she returned home again, her house had been broken into and burglarized. The thieves knew that by calling and saying they were Mall Security, they could lure her out of her house long enough for them to burglarize it.

(You’ve been struck by A smooth criminal)

Many criminals are highly intelligent and know how to seize opportunities given to them. All you can do it do everything in your power not to make it easy for them.

  1. Don’t display your valuables in your car.
  2. Use car and home alarms.
  3. Trust but verify, don’t trust text and e-mails without voice confirmation.

Do you want cute, or effective pepper spray?

With college about to start up this week, many parents will be packing their young adults

Bling Sting Pepper Spray is sparkly!

off to college. Some parents may be sitting down with their young daughters having ‘the talk’.  No not that talk, we are referring to the talk about sexual assault, and staying safe.  To remind you of the sexual assault statistics, 1 in 4 college age females experience some form of sexual assault while attending college.  As you may know as readers of this blog, we attempt to educate you about self-defense contingencies to reduce your chances in being part of that statistic.   I’ve also told you that many college campuses provide self-defense solutions ranging from RAD classes, Free shuttle rides, to escort services. This is a good thing and we applaud any and all efforts that college are taking to reduce sexual assault victims. It also appears that some colleges stores are now selling pepper spray. I was passing a student store on one campus and saw they were selling Bling Sting Self-Defense product.  First, let me state for the record that I’m for using any effective product that will keep you safe.  I will also say for the record I have nothing against the Niche marketing tactic that Bling Sting uses.  Really, I don’t. Now, that I have those statements out of the way let’s examine choosing effective pepper spray.

I have a question for you consumers.  If you were going to purchase pepper spray, what do you want? Do you want to buy something that is effective, or something mildly effective but a fashion accessory?  Now, mind you there are highly effective brands pepper sprays that come in fashion cases. Dooney & Bourke, Saber Red, and Streetwise offer pepper spray in fashionable cases. But should how a pepper spray case looks really be your primary deciding factor on picking your pepper spray?  Do you think your attacker is going to be impressed? What about your friends? That is what I saw when I looked at Bling Sting Pepper Spray.  I picked up a package of their pepper spray, looking for one thing -what strength it was, and also its Certified Heat Rating.  I guess it’s either I small print, or inside the package. Because I did not see it. I really did look.  In the FREE Guide to Pepper Spray, we tell you how to select pepper spray we don’t recommend a specific brand, but we do recommend that you look for what is legal where you reside,  it’s a good fit for you, and its effective rating (CHR or SHU).  The one thing we never mention was, is it a good fashion accessory for you?

In order to find out more about Bling Pepper Spray products I researched it.  This is one of the things we mentioned in the Guide to Pepper Spray, to research before you buy.   Remember, you are purchasing something to help save your life in a dangerous situation.  What factors are the most important to you?  One that should be important is effectiveness!

Here is the verbiage from their webs site

Blingsting pepper spray is not only the cutest pepper spray ever, but it’s the same exact formulation used in other pepper sprays you’ll find on the market. We use a 10% OC formula (that’s oleoresin capsicum … yeah, we can use big words too) that is the strongest formulation allowed in all 50 states.

Bottom line: it’s HOT AF and when used in a defensive manner, will cause major respiratory effects like choking, watery eyes, and temporary blindness for an hour or so. Yikes. Pepper spray is not a toy, and it’s not funny to use it in any way other than in a true emergency. It’s also illegal to misuse pepper spray. Jail is not a good look. Orange is not your color. Be responsible and be vigilant.

Bling sting is the pepper spray so cute, it hurts! Ok, you can buy some now. Just make sure you are ready for TONS of compliments.

BLINGSTING PEPPER SPRAY KEYCHAINS AS SEEN IN COSMOPOLITAN
I’m going to break these down. Again ,this really isn’t an attack against Bling sting but to educate you one marketing practices that are more about selling the product than protecting you.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I question various sales tactics.  But let us examine what they are selling you.  First Bling Pepper Spray IS Pepper Spray, there is no doubt about that.  Can Pepper Spray be effective for your self-defense?  Studies and experience says yes. Bling Sting does sell pepper spray.

Bling Sting primary attribute…it’s attractive.  OK that’s the hook of their product and it’s in the name.  So if Bling is more important than overall effectiveness against criminals, this Pepper Spray product is for you.

Bling Sting has the same formulation as other pepper sprays.  That’s like saying the Wendy’s burger had the foundation that other hamburgers have.  Generally, it can be considered a true statement.  But it’s a Whopper the same as a Big Mac?  Isn’t a Stake and Shake burger the same as White castle burger?  Not all pepper spray is equal. Isn’t Sabre Red Pepper Spray is slightly different from Smith and Wesson Pepper Spray that is slightly different from Streetwise…etc.

We use a 10% OC formula (that’s oleoresin capsicum … yeah, we can use big words too) that is the strongest formulation allowed in all 50 states.  Hmm?  That remark about OC..what are they trying to convey to their target audience? Ponder that! As far as I know, all modern pepper spray is OC.  Most of the pepper spray sites that I have visited explain what OC means.  But, I guess they want you to believe something from that statement.

Now they clam at that 10% is the strongest allowed in all 50 States.  This is primarily true, based in current Pepper Spray State Restrictions. However, consider this fact – of all 50 states there is only one states (Michigan) that have a strength limitation. Many of the others have a limitation on size but not strength. The remaining states have no limitation at all. So if you don’t live in Michigan, why would  want a weaker pepper spray?  When it comes to Pepper Spray strengths you can purchase 5%, 10% 15%, 18% and 23% OC Pepper Spray. But what does that really tell you? Think of OC like liquor proof…the stronger higher the proof the stronger the liquor.  What kind of pepper spray do you want ,a wine cooler or Kentucky Bourbon, or Gin? Again, not bashing Bling Pepper Spray, one thing they don’t have to worry about is meeting the state requirements of Michigan.

The rest of their statement is true, Pepper Spray is not a toy, it can be considered a weapon. It is an effect means to disable most people, and in rare instances kill people who have pepper allergies. You can do an internet search for the number of criminals that use pepper spray. They close their ad with two statements, again focusing on their major selling point, it’s cute.

Their remainder page also tells about all the impressive places that Bling Sting purchased advertisements. Believe it or not companies can purchase ad space for the right amount of money. We get calls monthly from Magazines, Internet Radio Stations, Schools, Television Channels like Lifetime and more to purchase advertisement space.  So saying your products are featured on a media platform simply means a sales agent from that venue got a nice commission to place an ad for your product. Perhaps someone who was interested in their niche concept….cute self defense products.

I’m not even gonna mention the price… except you can get more effective pepper spray — for less..but sadly these stronger brands lack the bling factor that Bling Sting can give you.

Once again, I will reiterate something I said before.  I prefer you have something to defend yourself when the time comes, rather than nothing.

However, just like when you are shopping for a car, take the time to not get a lemon!
