Running and Jogging Safety, Don’t Forget Your Pepper Spray

What are good ways to avoid trouble when I’m jogging, even if I carry pepper spray?

Here are some tips that will make you a harder target for sexual assaults, muggers and rapist:

  • Pay Attention to everyone, everywhere!
  • Avoid running/jogging at night, definitely avoid Friday and Saturday nights.
  • If possible never run alone. There are far too many drunken young men driving around just looking for trouble.
  • If practical, jog in the early morning. Most rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswoggles, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, shot-kickers, scumbags, deadbeats, and slugs, will still be in bed.
  • You may like music when you run, try not plugging both ears
  • If you see people ahead who look like trouble or you get a bad feeling, swallow your pride and take a safe detour, or turn around and retrace your course.
  • Be aware of hiding places and blind corners.
  • Carry pepper spray

Facts about Alcohol and College Sexual Assaults

collegedrunk

Once young Adults leave home from the watchful eyes of their parents, it seems that for many the ability to make wise choices is often something they leave home as well. Once they are in college they begin to experiment with alcohol.  Unfortunately for many, this is when things don’t go as planned.

Conservative estimates of sexual assault prevalence suggest that 20 to 25 percent of American women have experienced sexual assault, including rape. Approximately one-half of those cases involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator, victim, or both parties. Alcohol contributes to sexual assault through multiple pathways, often escalating existing risk factors. Beliefs about alcohol’s effects on sexual and aggressive behavior, stereotypes about drinking students, and alcohol’s effects on cognitive and motor skills contribute to alcohol-involved sexual assault. The lines of Consent become blurred in the minds of one or both parties

Here are some interesting findings

  • Alcohol use can contribute to an atmosphere where anything goes, including rape by individuals or groups of Males.
  • Perpetrators use many forms of coercion, threats, and manipulation to rape their victim including alcohol and drugs. Alcohol, Rohypnol, and other drugs are often used to incapacitate victims.
  • Alcohol slows reflexes and can impair the victim’s ability to recognize a potentially dangerous situation
  • Alcohol impairs judgment and lowers inhibitions, making some people more likely to force sex on an unwilling partner.
  • Males who have committed sexual assault also frequently report getting their female companion drunk as a way of making it easier to talk or force her into having sex. (Abbey, A., McAuslan, P. & Ross, L. Sexual Assault Perpetration by College Males: The Role of Alcohol, Misperception of Sexual Intent, and Sexual Beliefs and Experiences. Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, 17, 167-195. 1998.)
  • An incapacitated person does not forfeit his/her rights. In Michigan when someone is drunk, she or he is unable to give consent. If you have sex with someone who is passed out or incapable of giving consent, it will be considered SEXUAL ASSAULT
  • Males are more likely than Females to assume that a woman who drinks alcohol on a date is a willing sex partner.Males who think this way, 40% also believe it is acceptable to force sex on an intoxicated woman. (Journal of American College Health, 1991)
  • Under the influence of alcohol, Males are more likely to interpret a woman’s smile, laughter, clothes or body language as evidence that she wants to have sex.
  • Alcohol use at the time of the attack was found to be one of the four strongest predictors of a college woman being raped. (Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology)
  • Although the new reports have labeled drugs such as Rohypnol and GHB as the date-rape drugs of the present, these are only two of the many drugs used to incapacitate a victim. Of the 22 substances used in drug-facilitated rapes, alcohol is the most common. (LeBeau, M., et al., Recommendations for Toxicological Investigations of Drug Facilitated Sexual Assaults, Journal of Forensic Sciences. 1999.)
  • At least 80% of college students who had unwanted sex were under the influence of alcohol. (Core Institute, University of Southern Illinois, 1995)
  • Alcohol is many times a common factor in most cases of dating violence. Of campus sexual assaults, 75% involved the consumption of alcohol by the victim and/or the perpetrator. (Caponera, 1998)
  • Of those involved in acquaintance rape, 75% of Males and 55% of Females had been drinking or taking drugs prior to the incident. (Caponera, B, 1998)
  • In 55% of campus sexual assaults, the offender and/or victim were drinking or using drugs (“The Rape Victim: Clinical and Community Interventions,” Sage Library of Social Research, 1991)
  • 60% of Sexual Assaults are never reported and legal agency.
  • 97% Of rapist never spend one day in Jail.

Don’t Consult The Hong Kong Book of Kung Fu

download (1)I’ve written about Krav Maga (contact combat) form of Self Defense in a previous post.  Krav Maga has released an android app so that users can watch video tutorials to learn self-defense techniques based on military grade jiu-jitsu.  Krav Maga  is a martial art and self-defense system developed for the Israeli military that consists of a wide combination of techniques incorporated from boxing, savate, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Judo, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and grappling, along with realistic fight training. This Military grade system is created to work in real life situations, unlike MMA, UFC, Mixed Martial Arts, which is entertaining to watch but will get you killed in a street fight.  Krav Maga teaches techniques that work where there are no rules and your attackers never play fair – on the real streets

While Krav Maga is an excellent martial art style and will serve you well in defending yourself, I usually find that to truly learn a Martial Art, you need to be under the instruction of a instructor, and do actual practice.

If you remember the classic cartoon Hong Kong Phoney, the hero always consulted his trusty Hong Kong book of Kung Fu before making a move, this is what came into my mind when I heard about this. If you have never seen the cartoon I’m sure there are a few episodes on YouTube

Or

If you remember in the movie the Karate Kid, Daniel tried using a karate book to learn karate moves, which didn’t quite work out.

Or

In the classic Andy Griffith Show, Deputy Barney Fife used a book to study Judo moves. In one scene, he tried to show Andy a few moves and stopped in mid demo to consult the judo book.

Today you can find all kinds of book, and YouTube video, DVDs and not mobile apps that attempt to teach martial arts moves.

While I do advocate having many tools at your disposal including carrying a self-defense product like pepper spray and knowing some basic martial art self-defense strategies. I don’t think you can truly master martial arts from watching a video even if it is in your phone, or on your computer screen.  I’ve taken karate for years and know from experience that if you don’t shape your foot correctly doing kicks, you can injury your foot, and the same come with punches.  The most important benefit from actually taking a class is the repetitive nature of the drills, so that you can perform the moves without thinking about them. Unless you have lots of discipline to repeat the moves you watch, they really want do you much good, other than perhaps push you to take a class.  It is not going to benefit you to get into a situation and reach for your smart phone to see what move to make.

Krav-Maga

I would ask that you Take a look at the app an explore the Krav Maga style, and if you are serious about learning it, enroll in a good class.

Sexual assault affects many lives

Sexual assault affects many lives—both directly and indirectly. It is a horrible crime that spans across all ages, sexual orientations, k0753024religions and genders, and affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels. Let look in some statistics.

  • According to The National Women’s Study, 683,000 forcible rapes occur every year; which equals 56,916 per month; 1,871 per day; 78 per hour; and 1.3 per minute {National Crime Victimization Survey. Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice, 2000.}
  • An estimated 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will experience a sexual assault in their lifetime {National Crime Victimization Survey. Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice, 2000.}

While precise legal definitions of this crime can vary by states and jurisdictions, rape is the term commonly used to mean forced sexual intercourse, including vaginal, anal or oral penetration. We use the terms sexual assault or sexual violence to refer to any to unwanted sexual act against or without a person’s consent—any sexual, physical verbal or visual, act that forces a person against their will to have unwanted sexual contact or attention.

No matter what the circumstances of the crime are, sexual violence is a weapon used by perpetrators to hurt and dominate others—motivated by a need to control, humiliate and harm. It is never a survivor’s fault.

Did you Know that:

  • Females 18 years of age and over comprise the largest category of women forcibly raped in 1998 (45.6 percent). Forty percent of rape victims were ages 12 to 17 and 12.4 percent were ages 0 to 11. {National Crime Victimization Survey. Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice, 1999.}
  • About 81 percent of rape victims are white; 18 percent are black; 1 percent are of other races. {National Crime Victimization Survey. Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice, 1999.}
  • About half of all rape victims are in the lowest third of income distribution; half are in the upper two-thirds. {Violence against Women. Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice, 1994.}
  • One of every four rapes take place in a public area or in a parking garage.
  • Thirty-one percent of female victims reported that the offender was a stranger.
  • Sixty-eight percent of rapes occur between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • At least 45 percent of rapists were under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • In 29 percent of rapes, the offender used a weapon.
  • In 47 percent of rapes, the victim sustained injuries other than rape injuries.
  • Seventy-five percent of female rape victims require medical care after the attack.

These statistics are according to the U.S. Department of Justice: {All statistics are taken from: Violence against Women, Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice, 1994.}

By working together and pooling our resources during the month of April, we can highlight sexual violence as a major public health, human rights and social justice issue and reinforce the need for prevention efforts
