Incident: Off-campus Robbery

Date:  08/24/15

Time:  2342 ( 1142pm )

Reported to: River City –City Police Department and College Of River City Department of Public Safety

Location: 141 St. George St., River City, S.C.

Suspects’ status: at large

Incident description: On 08/24/2015 at 2342 hours, the victim stated that as she passed 141 St. George St., an unknown person grabbed the strap to her purse from behind. The victim stated that she turned around to see a man tugging on her purse strap. She resisted him and attempted to fight him off by punching him repeatedly in the head until the purse strap broke and the suspect ran. The victim stated that she and a witness gave chase to the suspect across St. George Street into the parking lot of the This and That AME Church at 15 Morrison Street, where she lost sight of the suspect.

Suspect Description: Believed to be a black male in his mid-20s, wearing a grey shirt, and black shorts with white tennis shoes. He is approximately 5 ft., 6 in. tall, thin build, with a buzzed style haircut.

Important Message: It is important to note that the victim/survivor is never the cause of the criminal offense. The College does not tolerate this behavior.

Tips:

  1. Use well-lit routes;
  2. Avoid dark vacant areas and those not frequented by other people.
  3. Avoid walking alone at night.
  4. Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times.
  5. Avoid distractions like talking on your cell phone.
  6. Use ATMs during the day. If you must use an ATM at night, do not do so alone. Avoid ATMs that are not clearly visible from the street.
  7. Be aware of people loitering in areas around ATMs, vehicles and residences.
  8. Carry some type of non-lethal self-defense products.
  9. Enroll in the RAD Class if you campus offers it!

If you observe unusual activity, try to remember details as best you can (for example, what a person was wearing or any other identifiers like scars, tattoos or shoes). As stated above, always be aware of your surroundings, avoid walking alone at night and notify Law Enforcement immediately if you observe potentially dangerous situations or individuals.
