Storage Unit Break-ins on the Rise

I’ve been watching a growing trend of Storage Unit Break-in across the nation.  In the city where I live I think I’ve heard a story almost every other week, or at least twice a month.  downloadYou can do a google search to see just how common this is becoming.  According to shows like ‘Good Morning America’ this type of crime is on the rise. Some Examples are listed below.

  • Store manager reports robbery
  • Property recovered from storage unit break-in
  • Deputy witnesses storage unit break-in
  • Update: Two men could be responsible for more than 30 storage unit break-ins
  • Storage Unit Break-In Leaves Homeless Man With Future Stolen

I rented a storage unit for 10 years, and I noticed that when I went to empty it, that there were items missing, largely children toys. Now I would have to take responsibility for the times I forgot to lock the inner door, which means that someone who was in the same unit (there were 6 in the inner unit) may have gone in there.  However, in many of these recent cases, the thieves are penetrating the outer fences, and cutting lock to the various units and then making off with the goods. The thieves did not seem to care about the various security cameras that many of the Storage Units had to carry out their crimes.

Many of the hot items seem to be

  • Off-road vehicles
  • Tools
  • Store Merchandise
  • Auction Items
  • Vehicles

So what can you do to protect your storage Unit

As a general rule ‘quid enim tibi solvere’ (You get what you pay for). Unfortunately you take the risk when storing your stuff at these places, it’s usually written in the rental agreement.  Also legally you can’t buy insurance for someone else’s property.  Check out the Storage unit’s  Security and break in history (you can usually do a Google search) Know what security measures they unit has.  Security Camera only record that happened, so that you have some type of evidence, and sometime they deter break-ins.  However, as you have seen on TV, the modern criminals don’t care.  Think of all the bank robberies, or store robberies where criminals knew they were on camera.  One of the things you can look for in security counter measures are storage facility with an access control system and individual door alarms, which are the best tools for preventing burglaries.

The access control system requires renters to use individual codes, remotes or security cards to enter the facility. This technology not only gives self-storage managers a detailed record of which customers were on the premises and when, and it also serves as a security measure aid in keeping out unauthorized people. This measure only works if no one knows your code.

The Individual storage unit door alarms provides an additional layer of internal security by immediately alerting self-storage operators if an unauthorized user enters a certain unit. Experts have said that these alarms are particularly effective in protecting against a common type of self-storage theft—an existing customer clearing out another customer’s unit.

  • Take notice of anyone who happens to be noticing you when you are storing your valuables.
  • Be sure to secure your unit with a GOOD Lock every time you leave.
  • You can add some type of inner alarm system to perhaps frighten them (it may work).
  • Have an inventory sheet of everything you have in your unit including, description and serial numbers
  • MARK you expensive items with some type of engraving tool, which will make it easy for you or the police to give to pawn shops or scrap metal places.
  • If you have a vehicle in the UNIT, you can secure it with something like the CLUB.
  • Place your most expensive items in the back of your unit. As with most crimes, crooks will only spend about 10-12 minutes to grab what they can.
  • Have Renter’s Insurance just in case you are a victim.
