What You Should Know about Buying Pepper Spray

Buy Pepper SprayPerhaps you have seen the internet ads, or store displays advertising Pepper Spray. Perhaps you are pondering the question “Will this really help me when I need it?” Before you think about buying or using pepper spray, there are a few things you will need to know.

First, you should be aware of your local laws regarding its possession and use of pepper spray. There are laws that restrict what types of sprays are legal. There are laws that prohibit you for having pepper spray over a certain size. There are states that prohibit you for buying them out-of-state. There are state laws that require a permit to carry pepper spray, If you are not sure what they law is in your area please contact your local law enforcement office for more information about the laws where you live, or visit your state government’s Web site to find information about pepper spray laws. If you live outside the U.S., you’ll need to research your national and local laws about pepper spray. For example, in Canada and Belgium it’s illegal for private citizens to carry pepper spray, whereas in China you need a permit to carry it.

Next, you will want to consider the type of pepper spray you want to purchase, including its strength and the container it comes in. Do you want something that doesn’t look like pepper spray such as a pen, or a ring? Do you want it to have a safety feature that makes it more difficult for you to accidentally spray yourself? How big of a container do you want to carry? Do you want a liquid, gel or foam formula?  Do you want steam, cone, or fog? The answers to these questions depend upon your needs, and you should research more information to make sure you are getting the kind that works best for you.

Next, How many SHU are enough for you? Huh? What’s a SHU? SHU stands for Scoville Heat Unit. The scoville scale measures how ‘HOT’ the pepper spray? Although many brands claim to be the best, we recommend you consider the unbiased results of an independent laboratory* that tests the heat of the pepper once it is sprayed out of the can. The Certified Heat Rating (CHR) measures how hot the pepper spray will be once it comes in contact with your attacker. Think of it this way. When you go to McDonalds and order a quarter pound hamburger. This is the same as the SHU. However, the quarter pound in this case is the weight of the burger BEFORE it was cooked. The weight after it is cooked often less than a quarter pound. This is analogous to the CHR, i.e. what is actually is.

For example the Streetwise 18 Pepper Spray has a CHR of over 180,000 SHU making it one of the hottest, most effective self-defense sprays on the market. For comparison, the independent laboratory tested competing brands. They found the average heat rating to be 123,000 SHU, making Streetwise 18 over 46% hotter than most brands!

Next, if you do decide to purchase pepper spray, be sure to read and follow the instructions and pay attention to all warnings and advisories on the packaging. Aerosol canisters, for example, have temperature minimums and maximums. If the canister gets too hot or too cold, it can leak or rupture. You’ll also want to pay attention to the expiration date — most pepper spray solutions maintain their potency for about three years, but this varies by brand.

Another factor to consider is cost. Pepper spray can range in price from $3 to $50 for small, portable dispensers, though the majority cost less than $10. The range of prices takes into account a variety of factors, especially the size and type of dispenser, the number of “bursts” that can be dispensed from it, and the spray pattern it uses.
