Better Business Bureau warns of $9.84 credit, debit card scams

Please check your credit and/or debit card receipt for a mystery charge of $9.84. You could be a victim of a massive worldwide scam.

This mystery charge is attributed to generic-looking websites such as EEETsac.com, CEWcs.com and EduAcc.in, which claim to offer customer support services, but do not.

Thieves are using your stolen payment cards to make small charges that could easily go unnoticed on your statements.

The Better Business Bureau has put out a scam national alert about the scam Tuesday and urged citizens to closely monitor past and current credit card statements and to call the actual card-issuing banks to resolve the issues.

It’s not yet clear how widespread the fraud might be, or how and when the affected credit card numbers were stolen.

It’s not know how the scammers have gotten a hold of the credit card numbers, but what is known is that are t are putting through these small charges that they hope you will not notice. But, eventually the charges of $9.84 among hundreds of victims adds up to real money.

Since the credit card hacks that have hit Target, Michaels, Neiman Marcus and other stores consumers have doing a better job of checking their bank statements.

If you notice mysterious, charges please contact your credit card company. Scammer often try small amount first, and then try larger amounts later. The BBB says if scammers get away with it once, they will try it again. It is also possible from other scams that these crooks are trying to get more of your personal information. With the increase of identity theft, please invest in identity theft insurance. The one I recommend is the one from Zander, but please investigate the different companies to see which ones will fit your needs.

According to the FBI, these websites and these crooks are operating out of Malta and other countries overseas.

If you aren’t PLEASE check your accounts online at least once a week. You can also set up different security measures on your online account to send you text alerts for charges over a certain amount, and you can also have them block charges made outside of the country without your permission. Alerts, however are no substitute for human intervention.
