A few days ago I met a friend of mine in the grocery store, who only stays a few block from me. She told me that her home has been burglarized twice this year. So her husband has finally had an alarm system installed and even installed a security camera.  With the camera they found out that the thieves hid much of the stolen property in the shed in the empty house next door.  I’ve talked with residents in several subdivisions in the past year and it is more common than you think.  My friend even told me that after talking to others in her subdivision, she found out that there were others who had been burglarized.

• The typical thief lives within 2 miles of their victims, and some even know their victim.
• Renters are just as likely to be the victims of property crime as homeowners.
• A typical thief will spend between 90 second and 15 minutes inside your house
• The highest percentage of burglaries occurs during the summer months.
• Homes without security systems are up to 300% more likely to be broken into

Deter

— Sound residential security practices and good locks are a deterrent since they eliminate the opportunity for an easy burglary. Look for Lock Bump Proof Locks. Detect

— The possibility of detection is increased if you can force a burglar to work where he can be

seen.  A burglar also wants to avoid drawing attention to himself by making attracting noise, such as breaking glass or smashing doors. The noise of Barking dogs, security camera, loud alarms on doors and windows, or motion sensors or lights are the best way to detect and deter a burglar. It also helps to have nosy neighbors or a Community Watch program to alert  your or to  notify law enforcement authorities  if there is something strange going on.

Delay

—A burglar will normally spend on average about  6-to 15 minutes once inside your residence. If you can make it harder to get inside they usually give up, because they don’t want to get caught.. A burglar wants to avoid being caught, so the longer it takes to force a door or window, the greater his risk. It is nearly impossible to make a house or apartment impregnable, but it is relatively easy and inexpensive to make forced entry difficult and to delay the burglar. By being proactive in the principles of deterrence, detection, and delay, you will be more likely to deny the burglar access to his target. Lastly, DO NOT talk about upcoming vacations on social networking websites, or the local grocery store. You don’t have to be one of the two million residential burglary victims and neither do your neighbors. Remember —crime prevention begins at home.
