Car vs Bike

When I was younger I was in a car vs Bike event. I really don’t remember much except that the car won. In the city that I live, it is not unusual to see citizen using the two-wheel bi-pedal locomotion to get from place to place, especially in the downtown area where lots of college students use bike to commute to and around campus. In looking at current trends it appears that bicycles on local roadways aren’t going away, any time soon. If we look at certain factors such as skyrocketing price of gas, the push for more fuel efficient vehicles, baby boomers getting more exercise, new residents with bicycling habits, cities added more bike friendly roads, and growing concern about the environment – expect bike numbers to increase in the nation.

The Match

As mentioned above in the car vs bike match, things usually don’t go well for the bicyclists. In fact in 2009, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 630 bicyclists were killed in crashes with motor vehicles and 51,000 bicyclists were injured.

Bikes is a light-weight vehicle that is usually propelled by a chain and gear system powered by the feet for the rider. It can come with some safety equipment, but usually doesn’t fare well in crashes, and the tire are more prone to being punctured by road debris. Those driving cars need to have a respect for bike riders, because of the difference it weight and lack of safety countermeasures. There are states like South Carolina that have passed measures like the Bicycle Safety Act (www.scbikelaws.com) that help give bicyclist certain rights ,protections as well as obligations. Every cyclist need to research what laws are enacted where you are so that you know what you allowed to do and what you know what not to do. For example, does your state require that you stop at stop lights? What are the rules for using a cell phone while riding? Are you allowed to have ear pods in your ear while listening to your MP3 Player while riding? Are you required to have a license for your bike? How many abreast can you be in traffic? What are the rules for signaling? There are some places where the law still require having a bell. Many states require that bikes ride in the same direction as auto traffic. This usually means riding on the right, in the United States. However, is some states this practice has been removed. In South Carolina, the bicycle is legally defined as a vehicle. Bicyclists using a public roadway are considered operators of motor vehicles and are responsible for observing traffic laws. Bike riders have to also remember to obey all theses rules to be safe, riding in front of moving cars are not a safe moves. Just like texting and driving a car is dangerous, so is texting while riding a bike. Again, I have to reiterate to learn the bike laws in your city and state.

State law also has certain obligations for cyclists to follow:

– A cyclist riding in the roadway shall not ride more than two abreast, other than on designated bike lanes or paths.

– A cyclist shall not carry any object that prevents him from keeping at least one hand on the handlebars.

– A cyclist riding at night must have a light emitting white light visible from a distance of 500 feet on the front and a red reflector visible from 50 feet to 300 feet at the rear.

– A cyclist may not hold on to a vehicle on the roadway.

– A cyclist must stop at stop signs, except in bicycle designated lanes

– A cyclist shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable.

– Bicycling on sidewalks in the city of is prohibited and bicyclists must yield the right of way to pedestrians.

Just remember taking unnecessary chances and doing something stupid when it comes to being in traffic with cars, can cost you your life. Learn to share the road and don’t intentionally slow traffic for long periods of time.

The modern automobile is several tons to metal, plastic and rubber with all kinds of features designed to reduce the chances of injury or death in an accident. Since your vehicles are heavier and faster than their’s you need to learn patience and to share the road. I know there are drivers who have short patience, or hate to slow down because of a bike, but its better to have a little patience that to purposely hurt or kill a cyclist because they are running you running late. Learn to watch out for bicyclist when you are in residential or college communities. unfortunately just like little kids, come college students and adults to think when riding a bike.

With very few exceptions, there is only one road and it is up to bicyclists and motorists to share it and treat each other with care and respect. Adherence to the law is the foundation of that respect
