Dorm Room Rules

This month is national campus safety month. For many college students, the dormitory is both the first experience of living away from home and family and the first initiation into communal living. Life in the dorm can be exciting, rewarding, and a great way to make lifelong friends. It can be a great way to broaden cultural and intellectual horizons, and to learn about new people. On the other hand, life in the dorm can be difficult in testing and stretching your tolerance and maturity. One of the other responsibilities that came with dorm life is always a commitment to watching out for your safety and security.

You share the responsibility for the safety and welfare of everyone in your dorm community. This means of course that you are responsible for yourself and your actions, and no-one else.. This responsibility starts with yourself and the space you can control, namely your room and your actions.

The first thing you need to be mindful are DORM RULES. Please learn, observe and enact all dorm rules. One of the chief rules in dorms is securing the premises, namely your room. The best way to keep yourself, your roommate, your property and your safe is to KEEP YOUR DOOR LOCKED. I know this seems a bit obvious, but many thefts and sexual assaults happened because of an unlocked door. So if you don’t want to join the statistics of these students who didn’t do the obvious, then please LOCK YOUR DOOR. This is the simplest and most effective way to deter crime on any campus. Yet every year crimes happen because students fail to do this one simple act. Some students are notorious for leaving doors, unlocked, propping doors open, giving out their key to someone they did not really know. Some students have been stupid enough to leave a ground window unsecure so that an after-hours guest will have easy access to their room, but so could anyone else. By doing these things, they not only put themselves in danger, but also their roommate and the other residences in their dorms.
