Reverse ATM PIN- Hoax

The other day my daughter received a text message about a little known security feature that some banks ATM have.

The message was like this

I just found out that should you ever be forced to withdraw monies from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse. The machine will still give you the monies you requested, but unknown to the robber, etc, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you. The broadcast stated that this method of calling the police is very seldom used because people don’t know it exists. It might mean the difference between life & death. Hopefully, none of you will have to use this, but I wanted to pass it along just in case you hadn’t heard of it. Please pass it along to everyone possible

There are other variations on this message however what you need to know is this : THIS IS A FALSE CLAIM.

While this technology does exists, i has not yet been implemented by any banks. At this time, entering your PIN in reverse will NOT call police.

On certain alarm systems, they do have an Emergency Pin, that if you are forced to turn off you alarm, you can enter the emergency pin, and it will notify your alarm company of the situation, while silencing the alarm. But, at the time of this writing, this technology has not been implemented by banks.

But let’s be honest, if a robber has a gun on you, are you going to remember your pin number in reverse. While most pins are 4 digit long, some pins can be longer. And if your pin is a palindrome (6006,7447, 8998,etc) this system would not work anyway.

ATM Robbery Facts

  • At walk-up ATMs, most robberies happen at night between 7PM and midnight.
  • The typical robber is a male under 25 years old.
  • He usually works alone
  • He will be within 50 feet of the machine waiting on his next victim.

  • Most victims ar women, alone
  • Most Robbers claim to have a gun or other weapon.

What you can do

  • STAY ALERT – If you see suspicious characters near the ATM – LEAVE
  • Plan your cash in advance (budget), so that you don’t have to get cash from an ATM
  • If possible, use ATM in a store, or use the cash back option in a supermarket.
  • Whether in your car or on foot, look around before you approach the ATM.
  • Memorize your PIN, never carry that pin number with you.
