Walk Safely through your College Education

As part of National Campus Safety Awareness Month we bring you more safety tips.

Whether on campus, or off campus, college students do a lot of walking. When I was in school I lived on south campus when was on the other side of the hill from the campus. So it was up hill both ways, and yes…lots of walking. Almost all college students use their feet to get around, its health, it’s fun and there is no better way to experience the beauty that is on a college campus and in the community that exploring the community on foot. Walking is also a great way to relieve college stress.

Even if you like to travel light when you are out walking, never leave your common sense sleeping in the bed of your campus residence. College can be a great experience, but remember you are sharing this environment with others. Do not jay walk, pay attention to traffic lights, and cars coming for the parking garage, and even if you have the right of way, don’t assume that oncoming car will stop.

Even if you are out for just a stroll or a quick run, it is a great idea to have a destination and a plan ahead on how you intend to get there and back again. At the very least don’t give the appearance of wonderingly aimlessly. Walk as if you have a purpose. Radiate confidence and stay alert at all times. Use positive body language, including a head held high and posture maintained upright. Swing your arms and be mindful of your environment. The image, I tend to see are heads bend down, and intently texting or using their smart phones. Please put the Smart Phone Down! It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO STAY ALERT.

Walking Tips!

  • When you are walking on a sidewalk, you are safest walking near the curb, which gives you the nest view of your route. Building and bushes may screen you view.
  • Look up and ahead
  • Scan the distance
  • Look around you, and from time to time, glance behind you.
  • Take advantage of reflective surfaces, such as large windows, to check out what is behind you or across from you.
  • If possible…Never walk or run alone.

Be Safe When Walking Alone On Campus:

  • Arm yourself with a stun gun or pepper spray if you walk alone to class or are out walking or jogging
  • Know your surroundings at all times. Be aware!
  • Attach a personal alarm to your key chain that can be sounded if someone is following you.
  • Try to stay in a group.
  • If jogging at night, be sure to wear a reflective safety vest so that motorists can see you.

Adhere To A Buddy System While Away At College:

  • Let at least one person know where you are going and who you are going with.
  • It can only help if friends keep a watchful eye out for each other.
  • If you are in an emergency situation and don’t come home, at least someone will “miss” you and be able to alert the authorities.

Dress of walking. Wear comfortable shoes and non-restrictive clothing. Do not make yourself stand out as a target. Do not wear expensive jewelry, expensive sneakers, or designer clothing.
