There a great sense of adventure when you are moving into your own apartment. However there are certain precautions and safe tips you should take in order to make your new residence safe for you.

  • Location is Important – Select your apartment dwelling outside of a high crime or risk area whenever possible.
  • Check it out first- Before you sign a lease, you should perform a walkthrough of the apartment, whether it is new or used. To ensure the property manager has properly documented all the preexisting conditions, have your own move-in checklist, which will save you from having to pay for damage you didn’t cause. It is also a good idea to videotape or use a camera to record any previous damage, make a copy for the landlord
  • Check the Locks – make sure the apartment has adequate locks, parking facilities, lighting, and other security features, which will make you, feel comfortable living there. Avoid any location that makes you feel uneasy.
  • Re-Key the locks– If it is permissible when you move into a new apartment, make sure to have the locks re-keyed, you never know who had access or copies of the previous keys.
  • Know your Neighbors – Communicate with your neighbors, especially those living on each side and across from you regarding security etc of your apartment. They may offer you valuable tips, or alert you to issues. Know your neighbors routines, when they come and go, etc. Beware of anything out of place or unusual.
  • Cooperate – Cooperate with your landlord and apartment management as apartment security is of chief interest to all parties.
  • Secret Signals – Develop a method of communication between you and a trusted tenant in the event of an emergency. For example the use of secret signals, like the front blind being in a certain position, or secret alarms or other sound devices – if someone is being attacked on in need of help.
  • Secure your residence – Carefully secure (with permission) all access to your residence (doors and windows)
  • NOISE –When leaving your apartment to have a radio tuned to talk radio playing loud enough to be heard by anyone standing close to your front door. This gives the impression that someone is home.
