Defense Against Crime

Almost everything you wanted to know about Alarm Systems (Part 2)

This is the second part of our alarm system series. If you have read part 1, you may wish to do that now.

In our previous series on home invasions we discussed getting a home alarm system as part of your home defense systems. But how what do you need to look for in a good residential alarm system? Perimeter alarm systems are the most common kind of burglar alarm in existence for residential houses and other dwellings. Perimeter alarms give warning (a loud tone goes off) when an unauthorized person attempts to enter a residence through a door, window, etc. Some residences have intrusion alarms that give warning and go off usually after the burglar has entered a specific protected area within the residence. There are other residences that are equipped with silent alarms that make no noise by alert either the alarm monitoring station or the police that a burglar entered a dwelling or restricted area.

Qualities of a Good Alarm System

A good burglar alarm will have the following attributes.

  • The alarm should be heard at least 300 yard away. (so the neighbors will hear it)
  • The system should have a battery power backup so if the electricity is cut the system will still function.
  • The system should also have fore sensing capacity (ionization sensors are recommended)
  • The bell or siren sound should be located where it cannot be easily attacked by the burglar to disable it.
  • Has a Stay (Secures doors and windows) and Away (Door, Windows and Motion Detection)

Other Optional features

  • Motion sensors in case the burglar cuts their way in to avoid the door alarm.
  • Speaker system, so the alarm company can hear what is going on when the alarm goes off.
  • Cellular connection, in case the phone lines are cut.
  • Phone disruption alert, in case the phone lines are cut.
  • Emergency code- if an robber forces you to turn off the alarm, this code will alert the alarm company or police that you are being robbed.

Select your Alarm Company Carefully

If you walk around a residential neighborhood chances are you will see over a dozen different alarm company signs on display. Today there is a plethora of burglar alarm companies, most are honest and excellent craftsmanship, and are of flawless integrity. However, the reverse is also true, there are so upstart fly-by-night operators who are in it for the money and don’t have servicing your well at the heart of their business plan. These companies will offer you great deal, that seem to good to be true. The old saying “You get what you pay for” usually apply to these companies. These bad companies will sell defective systems or improperly install them. Some may even sell security information about your house and valuables to burglars. You MUST CAREFULLLY SELECT YOUR ALARM COMPANY, with the same care as selecting a Babysitter. Do your homework! Do internet comparisons, look at customer reviews. Ask your neighbors, friends, business owners, or local law enforcement agencies for recommendations.

Once you have an alarm system

Once your are the proud owner of an alarm system you need to make sure it is working properly. Test the reaction time of your alarm company at least once a quarter. It is also your responsibility to learn how to use all of its features. Learn the local ordinances for false alarms. Remember to arm your system EVERY TIME you leave the home. Remember, an alarm system is but one component in a home security system. Some alarm owners get pulled into a false sense of security. There is no guarantee that your residence won’t be broken into or robbed. It is your responsibility to take all preventive measures and precautions to prevent from becoming the next home burglary victim.
