Dog Attacks on the Rise

Here are some recent stories that have been in the news in the last few weeks.

  • Two pit bulls recently lashed out at other dogs, shedding blood and frightening the dog owners.
  • Authorities responded to two serious dog attacks over the weekend, including one in which a six-week-old Labrador retriever puppy was killed by a pit bull-mix.
  •  Sirlinda Hayes was working in her garden as she did every day, tending turnips and collard greens on a small plot outside her modest one-story home. Moments later she was dead, mauled by two neighborhood dogs that had gotten loose many times before but had not acted aggressively toward humans.
  •  A jogger who was mauled by a rottweiler said he is feeling grateful for being rescued by a neighbor. Without the intervention, he said he might have died from the attack.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), approximately 800,000 people in the U.S. require medical attention as a result of dog bites and attacks. 60% to 70% of dog bites are to children or elderly citizens.

One of the questions I get asked most by customers looking for some type of personal protection products, is how to protect against a dog attack, especially in lower income neighborhood where Pit Bulls and Rotweillers are the dogs of choice. First, let me say there is no such thing as a bad dog, only bad dog owners. There are certain breeds of dogs that are more aggressive than others, in fact small breed dogs tend to bit more than large breeds. However, when a person gets a dog, they should take the responsibility to train that dog so that they can control the dog, and take the proper steps to prevent hurt, harm of danger from these animals. Also, for the record a well trained dog can turn into Cujo under the right circumstances. However, many of these people are not responsible, so it is in your best interest to take the steps necessary to protect yourself and your family.

Here are some facts about aggressive dogs that I saw on a 20-20 program dealing with dog attacks.

  • Most of the dogs that bite are the family pets
  • 90% of dog bites happen to people who know the dogs
  • 40% of the bites to children result in loss of facial tissue (lips, cheek etc.)
  • 1/2 of the claims made on homeowners insurance are dog bites claims
  • Over aggressiveness in dogs has a number of different causes that all can be traced back to
  • 2 different areas: poor breeding or poor socializing.

I’ve written about various products in the past few years that are great at repelling dogs. I have either recommended carrying pepper spray or a dog sonic chaser. Thou I would lean more on the pepper spray side, as the sonic dog chaser won’t work on muggers. As an alternative to these products you could consider getting a stun baton, which is a great deterrent against a loose attacking dog or a criminal.  I have a neighbor who carries a golf club, which also works on both aggressors.

If you don’t have anything to protect yourself, then here are a few tips on how to deal with dogs or what to do if faced with a potential attack:

  • Always ask permission to pet a dog before attempting to do so.
  • Do not pet a dog unless it sees and smells you first.
  • Teach your children y never to tease a strange dog.
  • Do not disturb a dog while it is eating, sleeping, chewing on a toy or caring for puppies.
  • If a dog threatens you, remain calm, still and avoid eye contact. Back away slowly until the dog is out of site. Do not turn and run as this will provoke the dog further and may cause it to chase you.
  • If a dog knocks you down, curl into a fetal position, making sure to cover your face.
  • Teach your children to be careful around pets and how to properly interact with them.
  • Do not leave a child or infant alone with a dog, ever. I can’t tell you how many stories I’ve seen where the family dog killed the baby.
  • If a dog has bitten you or your child, clean the wound first and consult a medical doctor.
  • Always be cautious around strange dogs.

  4. This is a different sort of opinion that many people don’t usually talk about. Usually when I find stuff like this I stumble it. This article probably won’t do well with that crowd. I’ll look around and find another article that may work.
