Defense Against Crime

Burglarized: What should you do?

Here is the situation. Your spouse has the car at the service center, and your home alone. You hear someone break into your house, and they don’t know that you are home.

What should you do?

First, DO NOT Confront the burglar. Do not investigate the situation or draw attention to yourself. If you have a home alarm and can activate it without being noticed, then do that. Many of the many modern systems have remotes, and it’s recommended that you keep one in the various rooms where you can get to them, when you need them. However, remember it can take 5-30 minutes for the police to arrive. This action may make the burglar flee.

However, if you don’t have access to such a system, then allow the burglar to take whatever he/she wants and do not interfere. If possible, IMMEDIATELY and very quietly secure yourself and location in the house. (i.e. lock your bedroom door.) If you can safely, and without the burglar hearing you, IMMEDIATELY CALL the POLICE. Most cell phones come will the Emergency call feature. Tell the police or the 911 Operator there is a “burglary in progress” and that the burglar is NOW IN YOUR HOUSE.

Follow the instructions you are given. Allow the burglar time to leave or time for the police to arrive to come assist you. If you can safely observe the burglar’s escape, try to get the best possible description of the burglar, his mode and/or a description of his transportation including the license plate number, and the direction he was traveling. If you are still on the phone you can relay all of this to the person you are talking to, or tell it to the police when they arrive. If you can’t call the police when the burglar is in the house, wait until they leave.

What you should NOT Do!

It is only natural to become outraged, angry and scared at a burglar you see in your house. Some people’s natural reaction may be to violently respond or confront the burglar. You MUST KEEP YOUR HEAD and think. This burglar can be very dangerous or become dangerous if he become frightened if cornered or violently confronted. He could KILL YOU or causes you serious bodily harm. It is estimated that over 50% of today’s burglars are armed with handguns and won’t hesitate to use them on anyone who gets in their way. Use whatever training and/or common sense you need to, in order to stay safe. The bottom line is this. The material things can be replaced, your life can’t.
