Defense Against Crime

When a Crime Happens

Unfortunately even thou the news reports that the crime rate is down, realistically it is actually increasing in other places. I was talking to an associate who lives in a nice middle class neighborhood and she said that there were 5 break-ins in her neighborhood in one week. There have been at least 5 bank robberies, and several business robberies in my area in the last few months. Our over stretches and under-funded law enforcement officers can’t be everywhere. It is the duty of the citizens to be vigilant against crime. This includes participating in your neighborhood watch or citizens on patrol program. If you see criminal activity follow these steps.

Report the crime

  • Call 9-1-1
  • Is the crime in progress
  • Give the location/address of the crime
  • How many suspects
  • Are there weapons involved

Give accurate and complete descriptions of the suspects.

  • Clothing – color, design, or other identifying marks.
  • Hair/Hat
  • Shoes
  • Approximate height and age of suspect(s)
  • Type of build – slim/medium/heavy
  • Vehicle description, tag number, color

If the suspect is leaving the scene of the crime

  • State whether in a vehicle or on foot
  • Provide vehicle description
  • Relay suspect travel direction

Do not alert the suspect:

  • Alerting the suspect will make it more difficult for officers to locate suspects.
  • Stay on the line with the dispatchers until the officer arrives.
  • For your safety, no not approach the suspect unless you are positive that your actions will help the victim and not cause harm to yourself.
