Have you heard of Garage Hoping

In the continuing saga Summer Time and Summer Crimeconcerning bored teens looking for kicks by committing crimes, I came across a story the other day of teens engaged in a crime called “garage hopping.”

What happens in this crime is that teens go from garage to garage, looking for alcohol.

If the teens see a garage door that is left open, they’ll go in there and look for alcohol, beer, liquor.

Police say some teens went into the partially opened garage in a Mt. Pleasant, SC home looking for beer, but settled for bottled water. While they may be out for kicks, they are actually doing something that can get them arrested or dead.

Police are hoping other parents will take the victim’s advice and convince their kids that garage hopping can cost them dearly.

Look with the eyes of a burglar, how would you break in to your garage? Why would you break into or enter into garage? Are the doors constructed out of a single sheet of metal or fiberglass? If so, it is possible a burglar could gain leverage and bend them enough to get inside, he could not easily do so with reinforced steel or solid core wood. When I moved into my house the locksmith told me that the standard garage locks are the easiest to open.

Here are a few tips:

  • Never leave your garage door open even if you are home. (Easy way for a home invasion)
  • Make sure the house door from your garage is as secure as your front door.
  • Always lock the door from your garage into your house, especially if you are not in line of sight.
  • Ensure that the door to your garage is in good condition.
  • For effective garage door security keep it closed and locked at all times.
  • Do not leave your door opener in your vehicle.
  • If you don’t have a garage opener, you can also use a pad lick to secure the garage door from the inside.
  • Consider getting a motion alarm or drive way alarm for the entrance.
