Defense Against Crime

To Stun or To TASE

Both Stun guns and Tasers are in a category of products called self-defense products. They are designed to provide a nonlethal alternative to deadly force. Their purpose is to incapacitate an assailant long enough for you to get away and seek help or just get away. It should be noted that in most cases no long-lasting damage can occur to an assailant from either of these.

Many customers get the two products confused. A lot of that comes from television media who frequently interchange the two. And while they are both considered electroshock weapons or stun devices for legal purposes and they are both effective that is pretty much where the similarities end.

A Stun gun by definition is an electroshock weapon is an incapacitate weapon used for subduing a person by administering electric shock aimed at disrupting superficial muscle functions.  Stun guns, stun batons, and electroshock belts administer an electric shock by direct contact

Taser is an acronym for a fictional weapon: Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle. Tasers on are a conductive energy device (CED), an electroshock weapon, which fires projectiles that administer the shock through a thin, flexible wire. Its manufacturer calls the effects “neuromuscular incapacitation” and the devices’ mechanism “Electro-Muscular Disruption (EMD) technology”. Anyone struck by a Taser experiences stimulation of his or her sensory nerves and motor nerves, resulting in strong involuntary muscle contractions. Tasers do not rely only on pain compliance, except when used in Drive Stun mode, and are thus preferred by some law enforcement over non-Taser stun guns and other electronic control weapons.

Here are some of the major differences between the two products:

  • TASERS range from $300.00 to $1000.00 and more depending on model.
  • STUN GUNS from the low $14 to as much as $120 or more depending on the model.

  • TASERS can range from  about the size of your hand; some are handgun sized.
  • STUN GUNS are about the size of the palm your hand; some are disguised as camera cell phones for added effectiveness. There are also Stun Batons

  • TASERS disrupt the nervous and muscular system.
  • STUN GUNS disrupt only the nervous system.

  • TASERS have an effective range up to 15 feet.
  • Stun guns have to be applied to an assailant’s body.

  • TASERS uses 50,000 V with 18 watts of energy.
  • STUN GUN can transmit up to 4.5 million volts with somewhere between 7 and 14 W of energy.

  • TASERS have been repeatedly tested and found to be more effective than a 9 mm hand in stopping power and are nearly 100% effective.
  • Stun guns are on average 90% percent effective. (depending on model and what is between the device and the contact point)

Tasers for some offer a deeper sense of Security, however consider some of these points. What happens if you are attacked from behind? If your Stun gun is easy to reach, then you can use it on your attacker. What happens if you’re not given an opportunity to get your taser out to fire within those few feet?  What if you miss?  What if there’s more than one attacker? The one you choose could save YOUR life. Also as of June 2001, more than 351 individuals in the United States have died after being shocked by police Tasers
