How a Stun Gun Works and How to use them

How does a Stun Gun Work
How does a Stun Gun Work?

You may have seen web advertisments about stun guns, and may have wanted to buy one but you have lots of questions. Hopefully after reading this some of your questions will be answered.

First of all, a Stun Gun is an electroshock device used for subduing a person by administering electric shock aimed at disrupting superficial muscle functions. Some types of these devices are stun guns, stun batons, and electroshock belts administer an electric shock by direct contact.

The typical stun gun is a handheld device that has a trigger (button) and two or more metal prongs at the end of the unit that when enabled sends 80,000 to 1.2 million volts to the assailant. Stun Guns uses this temporary high-voltage low-current l discharge to override the body’s muscle-triggering mechanisms. The recipient is immobilized via two metal probes connected via metal wires to the electroshock device. The recipient feels pain, and can be momentarily paralyzed while an electric current is being applied. It is reported that applying electroshock devices to more sensitive parts of the body is even more painful.  Generally, the higher the voltage, the quicker the full effect of the stun gun, thus more effective. Besides voltage, the delivery method and the amperage of the charge are also important. A lower voltage stun gun with a better method of delivery may be more effective then the stun gun with higher voltage.

The electrical energy stored in the device is transferred into the attacker’s muscles causing them to do a great deal of work rapidly. This makes the assailant unable to produce energy for his muscles and his body is unable to function properly. The assailant will be unable to move for about 3-10 minutes because his blood sugar is depleted. This allows the device user enough time to get away and get help.

Some stun guns can be disguised as FLASH LIGHTS or CELL PHONES. They come in various shapes and sizes. To be effective a Stun guns must be applied to the attacker but will go thru up to ½ inch of clothing. Stun guns Can use at least one 9 Volt battery, a rechargeable battery as the energy source. They use high voltage and low amperage to disable attackers.

Knowing how stun guns work should build confidence in their use. And know this: stun guns and other PERSONAL PROTECTION PRODUCTS are used by the law enforcement communities and military units throughout the world for law enforcement and crowd control. These are the true professionals who know what they are doing. They wouldn’t use something that didn’t work.

That is part of the reason why all self defense products have grown in popularity so much-THEY WORK for self defense and crime prevention.

In all fairness if an assailant is on drugs or is drunk a stun gun may not be as effective You may have seen episodes of COPS where the police try to TASER or STUN a person High on PCP or some of other pharmaceutical products, and it was not that effective. They do not rely on pain for results. Stun guns are on average 86% effective.

If you feel threatened by an assailant charge the stun gun and hold it up for the bad guys to see the flying current and hear the sounds. Sometimes with a “back off” warning, the sight and sound of a charging stun gun is enough for the assailant to leave you alone.

That’s the down and dirty of how a stun gun works. If you are looking for a non lethal self-defense product a stun gun can be one of your best choices available. They are effective, affordable, easy to carry and use. When are you going to start carrying one?

Stun guns have been proven safe. In most cases they cause no permanent damage to an attacker, except perhaps a bad memory. There is no evidence that the electrical charge of the stun gun has adverse psychological or neurological effects. The effects on the heart or other major organs are very insignificant. Stun guns will not permanently injure or kill anyone because of the voltage. One amp will kill a person. Most stun guns deliver only 3 milliamps. That is far below the amperage that could do any lasting damage to an individual.

The best places to apply are the upper shoulder, lower rib cage, and upper hip on either right or left side-SIX TARGETS in all. If you use it on your attacker you cannot be shocked if the attacker touches you. The electrical current is absorbed in the muscles and will not pass through to the user, regardless of the conditions. Even if the assailant is holding you, there is no way the current will pass to you.

Most models we carry include a safety switch to prevent accidental activation. The unit cannot produce a shock unless the safety switch is activated AND the On/Off switch is turned ON. Some units have a disable pin so that if it removed from your hand it will not work.

HOLSFB-ONBELT_LARGEMost models are small enough to fit easily inside a pocket or purse, and include a belt clip so the unit can be conveniently worn on the waist. Leather and nylon holsters are also available. A stun gun holster can keep a stun gun securely in place. Some design allows quick access.
To effectively use a stun gun, hold the electrodes firmly against an attacker. Target an area that is harder and slower to move like the upper shoulder or the upper hip. The arms or hands are not good attack points because they can be moved away too quickly. To completely subdue the attacker, the stun gun must be continuously applied for about 3 to 7 seconds. More time is required if the person is large, or you are using a low voltage model.

Apply for ½ second to startle an assailant and cause some pain. A 1-2 second application will cause muscle spasms and cause mental confusion. A 3-5 second application will cause loss of balance, loss of muscle control, total mental confusion and disorientation. Assailants have been known to curl up in the fetal position with a 5 second application.

If you feel threatened by an assailant charge the stun gun and hold it up for the bad guys to see the flying current and hear the sounds. Sometimes with a “back off” warning, the sight and sound of a charging stun gun is enough for the assailants to leave you alone.

Stun devices are restricted in some areas. HI, MA, MI, NY, NJ, RI and WI are known states where stun devices are restricted. A few cities and counties also have laws restrict its use and ownership. Before buying a stun device, please make sure they are legal where you live. You may check stun gun laws and restrictions for some general guideline. If in doubt, contact your local police department.

Stun guns and pepper spray both have advantages and disadvantages. A stun gun can only be used at close contact with an attacker, while pepper spray can put a safe distance between you and an attacker (5-10 feet depending on model). Pepper spray must be sprayed in the eyes or inhaled directly to be effective, while stun gun works anywhere on the body. The effectiveness of pepper spray may be affected by wind and rain, and stun gun effectiveness depends on how long you keep the gun on the attacker. It is strongly recommended that you carry both. Do not rely on just one form of defense. For information about pepper spray, see our Guide to Pepper Spray.
