Defense Against Crime

Don’t count on it…

What would you do?We all hope that if we are attacked in public by a criminal meant to do us harm that someone will come to our assistance.  Sadly, this is not always the case.  So often in our society a brutal or senseless crime is happening to a helpless citizen, or someone is severely injured, and while there are lots of onlookers, NO ONE does anything to assist them. Why do people fail to aid their fellow man in time of?  Is it because of fear, apathy, indifference or the thought that somebody else will

Perhaps you may have heard of what happened to American Actress Theresa Saldana. She is best known for her work in motion pictures and television. She is also known for an incident that brought attention to stalker after surviving an attempted murder by an obsessed fan in 1982.

Arthur Richard Jackson, was able to find out the home address of Saldana and on March 15, 1982, he approached Saldana in front of her residence, in broad daylight, and stabbed her in the torso ten times, with a 5 1/2 inch (14cm) knife, nearly killing her. The attack was so fierce that he bent the blade in his rage. The sad part is that there were lots of people who stood around and watched in horror, but not doing anything to stop it.  Ultimately,  a delivery man named Jeff Fenn who came to her aid.

There was an article in Time Magazine which attempts to address why we have so many such incidents.

It was a hard murder to forget. Thirty-eight people passively watched as a man stalked, stabbed and killed Kitty Genovese, 28, in the predawn darkness of the Kew Gardens section of New York City five years ago. All heard her screams; none came to her aid.

You may have seen the following incident on MSNBC’s Caught on Camera. In Detroit Michigan, Leonard Sims a 91-year-old WWII Veteran was beaten during a carjacking of his Chevy Malibu in a liquor store parking lot. The low life perpetrator who did this as Deonte Edward Bradley, age 22 of Detroit.

If you watch the video you can see Deonte talking to a group of friends and then approach Mr. Sims under the ruse of asking to borrow a smoke from him. He proceeded to beat Mr Sims with sucker punches while Sims was trapped between his car door and a wall.  All through this ordeal several onlookers stood by and did absolutely nothing.  While Mr. Sims was lying on the ground Bradley, jumped in the car and left the scene. None of the onlookers came to him afterwards as well, they all left him laying there.

The only redemptive point in this story was that was caught on a surveillance camera and subsequently the Detroit Police Department released the video to public in hopes of getting the community involved in catching this piece of work. Which they did. Tips cam in giving the identity of   Nothing could be done to all those who just sat and watched.

(UPDATE: FED 2012:  Another such Story)

On May 10th after tips came in giving away this guys identity, Bradley who was arrested, and Mr. Simms got his car back. But life is not the same.

In each all of these cases, and many more, what is going through the minds of all those just standing around? Why doesn’t anyone do anything to assist.  What happened to defending the weak? Helping the helpless?  Has our society degenerated that much.  The thing is, people have always been this way, in a sorts.  The biblical illustration of the Good Samaritan illustrates this.  However, in our society helping others is not encouraged by law, as many people are aware.  In our litigious society, there can be a reluctance to help out in emergency situations. Fear of liability for any misstep can paralyze even the most helpful good Samaritan. It used to be that Good Samaritan laws are meant to protect those who come to the aid of others for no other reason than kindness, but all of this recently changed when the a California court allowed a Good Samaritan to be named in a law suit.

The truth is that each state has laws or regulations to protect the public from liability during rescues or rescue attempts. Specifics about your state should be discussed with a legal expert or attorney from your area.

However, this is no excuse for not acting when anyone is in danger,  or has been injured.

And don’t get me started on the new trend against ‘snitching.’

1But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them2 Timothy 3: 1-5 is dedicated meeting your safety needs by assisting those people who are unwilling to become a victim and are taking personal responsibility to protect themselves, and their families with our pepper spray, stun guns, and other personal security products. In today’s society being equipped mentally and physically is no longer an option.
