k0753024Every victim of crime suffers some type of damage from the ordeal. It does not matter if the crime was a burg alary, rape or murder. The resulting damage on the victim of victim’s family can be   physical, financial, or emotional, or psychological

However, thanks to the efforts of various victim rights groups, crime victims no longer get lost in the shuffle or misplaced in the system or forgotten in the criminal justice process. Almost every state in United States has passes laws that protect the rights of victims of a crime. The laws differ from state to state, so you should check what your state has set up. However most victim laws provide victims with the following:

Although the specifics vary from state to state, most victim rights laws provide victims of crime with the following:

  • The Right to Attend the the legal proceedings.
  • The Right to Compensation for damages
  • The Right to Restitution for damages
  • The Right to Retrieval  and Return of Property, if located.
  • The Right to be heard and be treated with dignity and compassion.
  • The Right to Be Informed about the case’s progress through the criminal justice system, including notice of a plea bargain.
  • The Right to Protection from intimidation and further harm.
  • The Right to A Fair and  Speedy Trial
  • The Right to Enforcement.
  • The Right to Equal Treatment under the law.
  • The Right to receive emergency assistance immediately following the crime which includes services for victims of sexual assault, child abuse, domestic violence, and elder abuse.
  • The Right to receive counseling for witnesses of homicide and friends or relatives of homicide victims.
  • The Right to receive crime prevention information and training

Your local law or social service agency can provide you with a complete list of your rights. You can do an internet search to find your state laws and services Additionally, most states provide services available to crime victims.
