Don’t buy the Sizzle!

Often when I go out on vacation to some resort location like Myrtle Beach, SC, Gatlinburg, TN or other locations, I meet people who want to give me FREE stuff. Some of this FREE stuff may include a free vacation, free tickets to a show, cash, a free tank of gas, a free computer tablet or other device, or many other things. To further tempt me they will tell me that all I have to do is come visit a resort for an hour, NO STRINGS ATTACHED. In the interest of pure research, and a free gift, I’ve been on these tours twice.

The tour are parallel to this experience.

You and 70 other people are invited to visit a nice restaurant (resort). When you arrive they just want your information, and for some reason you need to have a credit card – just to prove you have the ability to borrow money (WARNING FLAG). Then, You are escorted to a private dining room (hotel room) that has all the bells and whistles, and your host tells you about all the things you can enjoy here. It is like sitting down a fine table, observing, and smelling a seven-course dinner, including a nice big steak with grilled onions. You can hear the sizzle and smell the aroma of the meal. This cause you to salivate and dream of tasting all of this. However, you can eat it any of it!

Your host then takes you to a room where many of the other people who were invited to see the resort are. This is where your host asked if you enjoyed the experience, and can you see yourself enjoying this experience every year. Then you are presented with a opportunity to come enjoy the sizzle on an annual basis, and it will only cost you a few thousand dollars, that you can finance if you like. They also inform you that there are there are annual restaurant and sizzle maintenance fees. In the mist of your host tell you about all the benefits of buying the sizzle, like being about to rent your week of sizzle privileges to others, or trade with someone to experience their sizzle, you hear the applause when one of the other invited guest has decided to buy the sizzle. There is of course no pressure to buy (WINK WINK)

ARE THEY NUTS?

Think about how much money you spend on vacation. How much have you spent total in the last decade? Would you be willing to spend thousands of dollars each year (plus those fees) for what is really a nice hotel room (sizzle), that you might get a chance to use (not own) once a year. Add to this is the fact that there are few hundred sucker…who are sharing this room too, so you have to hope you can get the room the time when you want it! Add to that the fact that you have absolutely no equity in the place. The property owners keep the steak! And you have to pay extra ongoing “maintenance fees.” When you come to you sense, and want out of this bad deal you will find that selling it is near impossible. It will turn out that the nice sizzle experience that you could buy will become a expensive, ongoing headache, heartache and nightmare.

Why Not Just Buy your own steak

Did you know that the average cost of a timeshare in the U.S. is about $14,500? You can also expect $350 annual maintenance fees I don’t think I’ve spent that much in decade of vacations. However, If you put that money in a growth-stock mutual fund averaging 12% over 10 years, you would have almost $48,000. If you research mutual fund you can find them. However, just look at what you could be getting, if you just made better choices. If you leave the investment alone for another 10 year , you would have over $178,000. I think that with that you could have a nice steak, complete with the sizzle, that you own, and can go to any time you wanted, not just a week. That you can also rent out, that you can leave for an inheritance…etc. Think about this one, if you leave the money alone for an additional two decades (that’s 40 years) you would have about over $1.7 million! That can buy a lot of steaks, and perhaps let others come enjoy your sizzle.

But, if you like you can instead pay in that same time period, spend over $28,500, for the chance to enjoy the sizzle, and never get to enjoy the steak.
