Defense Against Crime

The Need to Carry Pepper Spray

In this present age, it is your responsibility to take the necessary precautions and obtain the skills and devices that will keep you safe. Most animals possess some type of self-defense skills; why not you. At a minimum, everyone should carry defense sprays such as pepper spray wherever they go. I know that sounds like a bit much, and I know some that would argue for stronger defense devices. However, I see enough crime reports to support my case. Put yourself in these true events.

  • You are at an intersection in your car and a man comes up and tries to open your car door
  • You cross the street to enter your truck and while you are sitting in the driver’s seat and are approached by three subjects matching the people you had walked by earlier.  Suspect #1 opened the door to your truck and stated “Give me your money, give me your wallet”, while yelling at you.
  •  You are walking west on XYZ Street near the campus when an unknown male strikes you on the right side of your head just below your eye and drags you into the parking lot near 61 XYZ Street with the intent to sexually assaulted you.

The above examples really did happen, the female who was sexually assaulted, was only a few block from the campus police office. I have to assert that it is not a matter of If you will become a crime victim, but when. When the time comes, will you be prepared. Unless you can predict the future, to know the date, time and place of when it will happen you should always be prepared. As mentioned in previous articles OC defense sprays have proven to be the most effective and easiest to use.

Now there are some who feel they only need to carry some type of personal protection product when that are going to be in certain environments, or when going out at night. This is a terrible and unrealistic train of thought. It does not matter who you are, what gender you are, where you are, what you are doing, or when you are doing it, you can be a target!. You may be saying this line of reasoning is being paranoid, but ask any person who has been a crime victim, if they thought they would be targeted when it happened to them. The answer would be no. Paranoia is an illogical fear not based on any facts. Here are a few facts as reported by the statistical branch of the United States Department of Justice.

These crime-statistics indicate that in the next hour, somewhere in the United States, the following will happen:

  • 900 Thefts
  • 189 Violent Crimes
  • 124 Assaults
  • 66 Robberies
  • 24 Sexual Assaults
  • 12 Rapes
  • 2 Murders

Carrying pepper spray at all times is simply good common sense! Make sure you have yours whenever you leave home.
