The Effect of CN and CS Defense Sprays

In our last Pepper Spray blog, I discussed the various types of defense sprays such as CN,OC, CS and variations and combinations of these products. If you doubt that defense sprays work, go a pet a skunk! The difference between the natural defense that God gave the skunk and the ones that humans have invented is how they affect the body. Use of Defense sprays is no new. These irritants, also known as tear gas, riot control agents, and lachrymators, were used to produce immediate discomfort and eye closure to render the victim incapable of attacking or resisting. Law enforcement forces use them for crowd control, and military forces currently use them mainly for training. They were used before World War I, and, during the war, they were the first chemical agents used—well before the better-known chlorine, phosgene, and mustard gas.

CS is the abbreviation for Orthochlorobenzalmalonitrile, and is usually called tear gas. This was one of the first defense sprays that contained and is still used in the tear gas models as well as some of the combo sprays models. Generally CS has proven to be less effective than OC. This chemical compound product is not eco friendl and it is also suspected of containing carcinogens (cancer causing agents).  CS replaced CN as the principal military and law enforcement riot control agent.

CN is the abbreviation for alphachloroacetaphenone, and is usually called mace . This type of spray is also one f the vintage types of defensive spray and has proven, like CS, to be less effective than OC. Just link CS, CN is a non eco friendly chemical compound that is also suspected of containing carcinogens.

CS and CN are both irritants to the membrane tissue. These agents cause stinging pains and tearing and can take 5 to 30 seconds before they become effective. In cases where the attacker may be intoxicated, or on drugs, suffering psychotic episode or in a condition where their ability to feel pain is diminished, these agents may have NO effect at all. For several years the field experience of the law enforcement community has been peppered with documented accounts of the total failure of both the CN and CS products when used against certain suspects. This reduced capability to subdue those who can’t feel pain, and were armed with weapons such as a knife. This coupled with the 5 to 30 seconds working time made these agents unreliable for self protection by untrained, and possibly physically limited citizens or security staff.

OC on the other hand..is a different animal …stay tuned.

When Neighborhood Watch Goes Wrong

This week all you have to do is turn on the news and hear some of the details in the fatal shooting or murder of a 17-year-old young man named Trayvon Martin, a Florida high school student by a 28-year-old George Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain. This is another story that has for the moment has captured national attention and have us asking questions.

If you have read some of my blogs you know that I am pro-crime prevention, and advocate for neighborhood watch. However, in the mist of protecting yourself, your home or your neighborhood, there is a fine line that we must not be crossed, or the defender may become the criminal. I have also stated that when it comes to self-defense, handguns are not always the best weapons of choice.

The premise of Neighborhood watch is just that – residents of the neighborhood watch for suspicions behavior and report it to the police. They are not to confront the suspect, not chase them down, and certainly not shoot them. Neighborhood watch serves as the eyes and ears of the law enforcement community, and nothing more.

According to a report from someone who lives in the gated Retreat at Twin Lakes, there have been numerous burglaries there. According to someone in the neighborhood there have been eight burglaries within 15 months, that he said was done by young black males. Statically 1 in 5 homes are burglarized each year, and I can only imagine what the residences were feeling. I can also only assume since the resident identified the age and race that these burglaries have either all been caught, or identified. I just hope this was just wasn’t thrown out there as a reason to falsely justified this action.

Zimmerman POV

So if we think like Mr. Zimmerman, he sees a young black male wearing a “hoodie” in the rain, and assumes he must be going to commit another burglary. We know from the 9-1-1 call that this is what we reported. He just saw a young black male. He said he was acting suspicious. I’ve not heard a report where Trayvon was trying door, peeking into windows, other than walking though the neighborhood. Zimmerman reported that Martin was acting suspicions and other interesting things including calling Martin a F*CKING COON, and suggesting that he was on drugs or drunk. It should also be noted at Trayvon was a guest of his father’s fiancée who lived in that subdivision So he certainly would have been a stranger to Zimmerman. Logic, would assume that Zimmerman went to engage the suspect and probably got into a fight with him, even after the police told him not to do anything. It appears from 911 calls that Martin died from a shot fired at almost exactly 7:17:11 p.m., seven and a half minutes after Zimmerman called the sheriff’s office.

According to the evidence Zimmerman’s first call to 9-1-1 was at 7:09:34 p.m., followed by seven witness calls at 7:16:11, 7:16:41, 7:17:06, 7:17:15, 7:17:54, 7:18:00 and 7:19:04. According to the 9-1-1 calls released last week, dispatchers told Zimmerman not to follow Martin. But Zimmerman did follow him for about 100 seconds down the street until the audio is cut when Zimmerman and the sheriff’s office end their call at 7:14 p.m. That leaves a 3-minute gap between the call and the shooting.

By the time the first 911 call comes in at 7:16:11 p.m. in the background of the audio you can hear a struggle. At 7:17 p.m. the calls about residents hearing gunshots start coming in, less than a minute before the first Sanford police units arrive.

According to Zimmerman Martin attacked him, so he shot him in self defense, and since Martin is not alive to tell his story, and the police only sees a dead unarmed man, and another man who looks like he has been in a fight, and seemingly have no other evidence so state otherwise. They go with the Zimmerman story.

Martin POV

You are visiting your father’s house, and decide to go to the local store to get a soda and your little brother some skittles. It was raining and he had his hood up. On your way back to your father house, you are having a conversation with your girlfriend, and notice that someone appears to be following you. This person has not identified themselves as being Neighborhood Watch, or security. You don’t know who it is. You don’t know what he wants. Perhaps, he wants to rob you. Perhaps he wants to abduct you. All kind of thought go through your mind. All you want to do is get away, and he chases you. He probably corners you, and you have to fend for yourself the best you can, you are yelling for help and then you hear a loud bang, the last thing you remember before hitting the ground. Probably thinking the last thought that many ask in their final moments “Why”?

This is one of many question we are asking as a nation “Why did this happen?” Those neighborhood that employ neighborhood watch need to make sure that those who are volunteering know the limitation of their authority.

While many in this country is calling for the jailing of Mr. Zimmerman, we should also as members of faith, pray for him and that the right and just thing happens in this case. We also ask for prayer, and action in the healing of our nation.

Choosing a Self Defense Spray

In a news story I once read, a woman in Kansas City Missouri drove into the parking lot of a car wash. She was approached by two men, one of which pulled out a gun and demanded her car keys. The woman seemingly reached for her keys, however she grabbed the pepper spray that she had on her key chain and sprayed the two men. The would be robber, coughing and blind, backed off and she was able to escape without harm. This woman was quoted by KCTV5 news: ‘Thank God. This is something that saved my life, and it could save any woman’s life’.”

Over the last few years, self-defense sprays, are often mistakenly called tear gas or Mace, have become the most popular non-lethal personal protection products on the market. The ever-increasing rate of violent attacks, sexual assaults and other crimes and news coverage of these and other similar crimes coupled with the reasoning of “if it is good enough for the police, it should be good enough for me” has led more and more citizens to depend on these personal protection products. The demand for self-defense sprays has become so great that at last count there were more than 80 brands in various sizes, spray types, casings, and formulations. There are three basic chemical compositions currently used, only one of which should be considered for personal civilian self-defense.

We feel that is important for anyone shopping for a self-defense spray to know the important differences between these three formulations, spray pattern effectiveness, and which spray to use where. Over the next few weeks we will be discussing the different formulations to educate you on what is available on the market and which ones you should consider.

Self Defense Spray Compositions

Below is a list of the currently three basic chemical compounds used in self-defense sprays.

  • CS (Orthochlorobenzalmalonitrile)
  • CN (alphachloroacetaphenone)
  • OC (Oleoresin Capsicum)

Of these three OC is the newest of the three, and according to all research and practical data the most effective, and the only one that is recommended for personal protection. We would also like to make mention that are some self-defense sprays that are combinations of the main three compounds. Some of these are OC/CS or OC/CN. These combinations have some advantages according to research and have been shown to work as effectively as an OC=Only formulation. However, most self-defense experts and trainers recommend an OC-Only formulation.

In our next article we will compare the effects of CS, CN, and OC when used in real situations.

Senior Citizens vs Crime

They are Old!

They are Slow!

They have money!

They have nice expensive stuff!

They make easy targets to rob and baet up.

And almost no one seems to care.

Lately, you many have seen various news stories where senior citizens were a target of crime. In one of the latest stories a WWII veteran was attacked, beaten, and car-jacked during daylight at a busy Detroit gas station and he had to crawl across a concrete parking lot to get help. If this wasn’t tragic enough there were lots of people who walked and drove pass him during this ordeal. What a shame! If you have seen the TV Show WHAT WOULD YOU DO, you know that we have a society of people who choose not to get involved. Some would say that this is a sign of the modern times, but it has happened before. During the same war in which this soldier fought a government decided to lie, round-up and exterminate some of its citizens, while other citizens turned a blind eye and did nothing. We all hope that when we are in danger that others would come to assist us. Don’t count on it!

7 Things Senior Citizens Can do

  • Have a crime preventions specialist or local police give your residence a home security survey. They can tell you of things you can do to decrease you chances of being targeted.
  • If you are returning home, look around of suspicious-looking strangers, have your key ready. If someone is home, alert them that you are coming home and to keep watch out for you. Don’t linger at the door. If you see someone near your house, go to your neighbor’s house and pretend to be a visitor, and it would be a good time to call the police.
  • Establish a light up and lock-up routine to make sure all your doors and windows are locked. Be sure to close your drapes and pull down shades when you are retiring for the night.
  • Jesus sent his disciples out two-by-two. This is an example you should adopt if possible. Whenever you need to go shopping or on an excursion that take you away from home, try to take a friend or relative with you.
  • Try to vary your routines, you don’t know who is watching you and trying to figure when you are not going to be home.
  • When parking, Try to park as close to your destination. Younger people should park a little further out to save spaces for elderly people.
  • Be mindful of strangers, not all of them are really trying to help you- TRUST YOUR GUT!
