Defense Against Crime

Crime is very real

It’s National Personal Self-Defense Awareness Month and I thought I’d discuss the reality of crime in your life.

Last week in Charleston a female citizen was walking down Bull Street towards Pitt Street when an unknown male approached her from the opposite direction.  The victim states that as she passed the male, he punched her in the face and knocked her to the ground.  The suspect struck victim in the face several times and banged her head against the pavement.  The suspect took the victim’s wallet after the assault.

In another story, authorities are looking for a man they say fatally shot his former mother-in-law a few days after getting out of jail for assaulting his ex-wife.

What would you do if you suddenly came face-to-face with a criminal?

In these times, it is very likely that you’ll be a target. Crime can happen to anyone, anyplace and at any time.  Will you know what to do in an encounter with a criminal? Are you prepared with the tools, knowledge, and skills to protect yourself and your loved ones when the need arises?

Instead of being paralyzed with fear, you can be empowered with the right tools to STOP a potentially life altering event if you buy the right protection and arm yourself with the knowledge of how to protect yourself and guard your property.   Don’t let some offensive criminal behavior negatively impact your life.  Don’t become the next individual or statistic on the growing list of crime victims.

Many Americans are scared, and they are angry. The daily missives crime news in their own neighborhoods has made average citizens afraid to walk the streets in front of their homes. Small towns like Walterboro has seen an amazing change in their once peaceful community as gangs and gang violence has moved in. This fear has fueled a public cry to end the killing fields in our towns and neighborhoods.

Even thou recent reports have indicated that crime are dropping in the FBI crime clock and statistics have shown crime still happening at the same rate. In America, the crime clock continues to click: One Larceny Theft happens every 5 seconds, One Burglary happens every 15 seconds, One Violent Crime happens every 22 seconds, One Aggravated Assault happens every 34 seconds, One Murder happens every 34 minutes, One Robbery happens every 1 minute, and One Rape every happens 6 minutes

Are you prepared?

Are you ready?

20 Good Self-Defense Tips

It’s National Personal Self-Defense Awareness Month and I thought I’d discuss self- defense steps you can take to stay safe.

According to the statistics on the RAINN web site

  • 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed rape; 2.8% attempted rape).1
  • 17.7 million American women have been victims of attempted or completed rape.1
  • 9 of every 10 rape victims were female in 2003.2
  • While about 80% of all victims are white, minorities are somewhat more likely to be attacked.

Basically, adult and teen females are the intended targets of 90 % or more of all types of assaults ranging from domestic violence to rape to robberies. Males are not necessarily off the hook. About 3% of Men in the United States have experienced and attempted or completed rape You should be mindful of these tips as well. They’ll work for you and you can pass them along to the women in your life.

  1. Always trust your instincts. Women especially are blessed with an uncanny knack for sensing things. They should use and trust that instinct. When you get a shiver down your spine
    be ready to react.

  2. Use common sense and restraint. Only God can protect you from stupid. Everyone has choices on where they go and how they get there. You should keep to well lit areas, go with a partner, avoid dangerous areas.
  3. Get some type a self-defense program in place. Check the police for local free resources.
  4. Get a self-defensive attitude. This will enhance your self-confidence and power to fight back. Building confidence in your ability to defend yourself shows thru, just as looking like a target will likely make you one.
  5. Learn how to avoid violent conflict. It takes two to tangle. Take the high road and walk away when given the opportunity.
  6. Keep practicing to be prepared. The self-defense skills you learn should become second nature to you. Do like Inspector Clouseau and go thru scenarios with a friend to be better prepared.
  7. Always be mindful of your surroundings.
  8. If your name isn’t Author P Dent, and the city isn’t knocking down your house to put in a free-way they do not hitchhike. Always take public transportation, a taxi or call a friend.
  9. Never act or look to be an easy mark. Don’t look like victim. Most guys who assault women are not all that intelligent but they are not stupid either. Someone who is walking with their head down, or busy texting or talking on their cell phone, make easy targets.
  10. Have body language that exudes self-confidence. Have that ‘Go ahead make my day’ attitude.
  11. When in trouble start screaming your head off. Studies have shown that you can attract more assistance by yelling ‘FIRE’ than you can by yelling ‘HELP’. Why you are yelling continue doing anything and everything to defend yourself including biting, scratching eyes, using pepper spray-anything !
  12. Get a survivor mentality. This starts with developing an awareness of your surroundings and aware of the fact that women are potential targets all their lives.
  13. With all of this information Don’t become paranoid. Just be aware and prepared!! Not everyone is out to get you.
  14. Your priorities are survival and escape. You don’t get style points. Fight dirty and live.
  15. React quickly. An assault situation demands a speedy response not where’s my pepper spray. This is where practice is handy.
  16. Use anything you can get your hands on as a self defense weapon. A pen in your purse, keys, your fingernails-anything that might inflict damage.
  17. Don’t be a provocative target. Don’t do anything to make yourself an easy mark. Getting drunk or high on drugs is akin to asking for trouble-even when with friends.
  18. Learn some basic points on the body that yield the results you want. You can search the internet for these. Eye gouges, groin kicks, the heal of the hand to the base of the nose, a hard punch to the ear all will get you a release.
  19. Owning a stun gun or pepper spray is not enough. Learn and know how to use them and practice using them. They will give you from 3-15 minutes to escape to get help or just escape and survive. Yea, I know I said practice already..cause it’s one of the best things you can do.
  20. It’s you or them. It’s your life is at stake here. I can’t stress this enough practice different scenarios so when (not if) the time comes you instinctively know what to do and it just
happens reflexively. Yes…practice.Following these tips may end up saving your life. Remember the old saying “walk softly and carry a nasty pepper spray.”

How to choose between a Stun Gun and a Taser?

It’s National Personal Self-Defense Awareness Month and I thought I’d discuss Stun Gun’s or Tasers.

Stun guns and Tasers are both in a category of products called electroshock self-defense products. An electroshock weapon is an incapacitate device used for subduing a person by administering electric shock aimed at disrupting superficial muscle functions. One type is a conductive energy device (CED), an electroshock gun popularly known by the brand name “Taser”, which fires projectiles that administer the shock through a thin, flexible wire. There are other electroshock weapons such as stun guns, stun batons, and electroshock belts administer an electric shock by direct contact

They are designed to incapacitate a person with an electric shock, and designed to be non-lethal, and provide a nonlethal alternative to deadly force such as hand guns. Their purpose is to protect you by allowing you to incapacitate your assailant long enough for you to get away, or get assistance from the police. It should be noted that in most cases that no long-lasting damage can occur to an assailant from either of these. There have been cases where people have died for being zapped by a Taser.

Stun Guns and Tasers are not the same. Nor is every stun gun equal. Entertainment venues such as TV shows or movies sometime interchange the two, probably because they are both considered stun devices for legal purposes and they are both effective that is pretty much where the similarities end.

By all estimates will over 15,000 law enforcement agencies throughout the United States and in several foreign countries use Tasers because there are effective at stopping a potential criminal without killing them.

Stun Guns unlike Tasers and their science fiction version have to physically touch your attacker to be effective. Simply touching an attacker with a stun gun or stun baton for three to seven seconds will deliver a high-voltage shock causing loss of balance and muscle control, confusion and disorientation bringing an attacker to his knees and making him incapable of further aggressive activity. You not only get a true sense of security, but the real peace of mind you deserve. PepperEyes.com and other retailers offer a large selection of self-defense products and the highest quality stun guns and stun batons models

Here are some of the major differences between Tasers and Stun Guns:

Taser is an acronym for a fictional weapon: Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle. Taser is a registered trademark. It has prompted a back-formed verb to tase, which means “to use a Taser on”; however, to taser is also commonly used.

Someone struck by a Taser experiences stimulation of his or her sensory nerves and motor nerves, resulting in strong involuntary muscle contractions. Tasers do not rely only on pain compliance, except when used in Drive Stun mode, and are thus preferred by some law enforcement over non-Taser stun guns and other electronic control weapons.

  • The cost: Tasers can cost between $300.00 to $1000.00 and more depending on model and features. Alternatively Stun Gun can cost from 15 to $150.
  • Appearance: some Tasers are about the size of your hand; some are handgun sized. Stun Gun have different shapes and sized, ranging from the size of the palm your hand to large flashlights. Some Stun Guns are disguised as camera cell phones or small flashlights for added surprise and effectiveness.
  • Operation: Tasers disrupt the nervous and muscular system. Stun Guns disrupt only the nervous system. In addition a most Taser’s can only be fired once, and then reloaded. Stun Guns can be used as long as the power lasts, on as many people as necessary.
  • Distance: Tasers have an effective range up to 15 feet. Stun guns have to be applied directly to an assailant’s body.
  • Energy: a Taser uses 50,000 V with 18 watts of energy. Their little brothers can transmit up to 4.5 million volts with somewhere between seven and 14 W of energy. The wattage is what makes the difference.
  • Effectiveness: Tasers have been repeatedly tested and found to be more effective than a 9 mm hand in stopping power and are nearly 100% effective. Stun guns are on average 86% percent effective.
  • Deaths: There have been several reported deaths of people who have been shocked to death by Tasers. There have few if any reported deaths by Stun Guns.
  • Availability: Both Stun Guns and Tasers are available to civilians in almost every state. There are laws governing both. In some states licensing may be required. Again check your State Laws.

Those are the basic differences. The differences between them are important for you to know because they both save lives. The one you choose could save YOUR life

Pepper Spray really works

It’s National Personal Self-Defense Awareness Month and I thought I’d discuss pepper spray.

What is OC Pepper Spray All About? OC is oleoresin capsicum, which is extracted from chili peppers and is commonly called Pepper Spray. This product is the most widely sold today and the spray of choice for police since 1977. OC pepper spray is generally regarded to be the most distressing to experience, but it must be sprayed directly in the eyes or inhaled to be effective. The product is an oily liquid not very soluble in water.

Pepper spray is often overlooked as a personal protection product. Not sure why. More people often think of gun when pepper spray should actually be the first line of defense, in most situations.Pepper Spray works very well against attacking animals with sensitive noses especially dogs, and bears and cougars. Pepper spray may also have limited impact on aggressive dogs like pit bulls, Dobermans or German Shepherds. Many members of the U.S. Postal Service or law enforcement agencies has all of its mail carriers or patrol officers carry pepper spray, Why? The do it because Pepper Spray really works.

Pepper Spray has modest beginnings that are steeped in history. Anyone who has served in the military has fond remembrances of their encounter with tear gas or pepper spray as part of their basic training in the gas chamber. Police Academies today all over the country and probably in the world have their trainee’s experience what pepper spray is like.

Throughout the ages, the Chinese have been using pepper and spices to throw at their enemies for literally thousands of years. In 1864.  Germans used tear gas for the first time. Chemical agents have been around for nearly a century. If you have ever had black or red pepper get into your eyes, you know what a very unpleasant experience it is.

The non lethal personal protection products that are available to the public for their use such as steel batons, stun guns, TASERS, pepper sprays, etc. all gets plenty of free publicity mostly because they are effective in saving lives and are so effective. Pepper sprays are a favorite of women for self-defense because they are inexpensive, readily available, small and easy to carry.

Pepper Spray is legal in all 50 states, however a number of cities and states have restrictions on sizes, strengths, etc.. If you have a question, it is wise to check with you local city police just check the internet.

Pepper spray can be considered a weapon. It is strongly recommended that some training or lots of practice take place before use. Please note that pepper spray has been known to have no or little effect on people who are on drugs or drunk. Why does pepper spray stop an attacker? When pepper spray is sprayed into someone’s eyes and face, it irritates the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract (throat). Coughing and choking may be experienced. It is very uncomfortable and there is some pain associated with it. The result is temporary incapacitation, mostly due to not being able to see. It has people too preoccupied with the blinding and painful experience to even attempt to do anything violent to you.

Like all personal protection products the purpose of pepper spray is to give you time to escape or get help not injure or maim. The effects of pepper spray can last as long as 30-45 minutes giving you more than enough time to get away with no lasting damage on your attacker.

pepper spray is it.

January is National Personal Self-Defense Awareness Month.

January is National Personal Self-Defense Awareness Month.

What would you do if you suddenly came face-to-face with a criminal?  In these times, it is very likely that you’ll be a target. Crime can happen to anyone, anyplace and at anytime.  Will you know what to do in an encounter with a criminal? Are you prepared with the tools, knowledge, and skills to protect yourself and your loved ones when the need arises?

This month is dedicated to educate citizens, especially women and teens about realistic self-defense options that could very well save their lives. The aim is emphasize that being totally prepared by raising your awareness, reducing your risk of being a victim. This however is only 90 percent of the equation. The other 10 percent of your safety is purely physical. The total package is aimed to make you more alert and more aware that to the fact that the key to their own safety lies within you.

Despite the recent reports that crime has dropped the following statistics have remain almost constant.

  •    Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted.
  •    Every 6 minutes, someone in the U.S. is raped.
  •    Every 34 minutes, someone in the U.S. is Murdered.

(Statistics from FBI Uniform Crime Reports http://www.fbi.gov)

When the time comes, instead of being paralyzed with fear, you can be empowered with the right knowledge, and the correct  tools to STOP a potentially life altering event if you buy the right protection and, arm yourself with the knowledge of how to protect yourself and guard your property.  Don’t let some offensive criminal behavior negatively impact your life.

The best way of protecting yourself is through personal self-defense education and training. Self-defense is not always about FIGHTING back.  Mr. Miyagi said in one of the Karate Kid movies  ” Best way to avoid punch, no be there.”  Your best way to avoid being a crime victim is to apply quick thinking and de-escalating methods to the situation in order to get away. Criminals feed off of vulnerability so stay alert to avoid becoming a statistic.  Did you know that approximately 95% of crime can be easily prevented?  Survivors of rape and domestic violence will probably agree that avoidance is much easier than recovery.

Where to begin

  •  Learn to do smart things that will keep you safe.
  • Make it a point to enroll in a local self defense class. Your local police can probably tell you of free classes.  While you are at it, take some friends with you.
  •  If you can’t avoid a situation, having the right personal protection product, and knowing how to use it can allow you to escape.
